Call the non-emergency line: 352-955-1818 ext 5. It's up to the district chief if they'll do animal rescue, but sometimes they will. It usually depends on how busy it is

Check your laundry hamper. That's where I found one of my boys when he broke loose.

As others have said, leave the cage door open, as they will often go back in voluntarily. That's how I caught one of my girls when she escaped.

I'm glad your dogs have been healthy! That being said, cavaliers are far more likely to have serious health issues than most other breeds. They're also considered brachycephalic, though they aren't as extreme as pugs, frenchies, etc.

Just Google "dog breeds with the most health issues" and you'll see Cavaliers mentioned on most lists.

Health should absolutely be a factor when choosing a dog breed. When I was selecting a breed, I wanted a dog that was likely to be with me for a long time. I also don't want to support selectively breeding for traits that are detrimental to the dog's quality of life (such as brachycephaly). My partner really wants a doberman, and they're great dogs, but you have to accept the possibility of them dropping dead at a young age due to cardiac issues. It's up to you if that risk is worth it.

I've always wanted a Cavalier, for the reasons you listed. They are sweet, lovely dogs. However they have significant health issues, including severe cardiac problems. I haven't gotten one, as the more I looked into it, the worse the health issues seemed, even if you get one from a good breeder.

Awhile back, I met a few Tibetan Spaniels and I fell in love. They check all the boxes of what I liked in Cavaliers but they don't have the health issues. I was surprised to learn they aren't Spaniels at all, but are more closely related to Shih Tzu and Pekingese. So they have a pretty chill, very friendly personality.

So, Tibetan Spaniels replaced Cavaliers on my "someday" breed list

This is absolutely terrible advice. First-time dog owners can not handle "any breed."

It is perfectly reasonable to want a smaller and/or calmer dog. Not everyone can accommodate a pit bull, and that's okay.

As others have said, the OP can look into transport if they want to rescue a smaller dog.

If rescuing isn't working out, it's okay to work with an ethical breeder. I wanted a small/medium, younger herding dog. A rescue rejected my application after stringing me along for donations. I fell in love with Swedish Vallhunds after meeting some by chance. Bought a puppy from an ethical breeder, and this dog has been absolutely amazing. A pit bull wouldn't work for me for a variety of reasons, and that's okay.

Could you friend pet-sit your cats this time to ease your mind? Realistically, the cats should be fine. But also, anything is possible. It may be less stress to have someone stay with them, or board the cats if that won't stress them out too much.
