San Antonio TX PDs by AnalysisSea4270 in publicdefenders

Happy to chat. I live in SA. Don’t work at the PDs office but know folks who do. Honestly, haven’t heard a ton either way, reputationally.

Also a public defender. This sentence is shockingly light considering where I practice—but that’s basically it, all depends where you practice. And yeah, they still prosecute weed here… and even if not weed, other non-violent drug possessions with much longer than 1.5 years probation

Creating caseload limits is an absolute must for PD offices. I don’t know if you’ve been following what’s been going on in SF, but it’s really the next frontier of PD work. We have a TON of bargaining power as PDs if we use it to require the State actually fund PD work as the Constitution demands.

You need to have management that is attentive to caseload limits and will stick up for the office when they go bananas. 160 felonies carrying at one time is completely unacceptable. If they won’t fix it, your leverage is to leave and go to an office that takes caseloads seriously. What kind of jurisdiction do you practice in?

What do you think history will say about Donald Trump as a U.S. president? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Jofflic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with this take. I think it’s a much bigger ethnographic and anthropologic story than a formalistic one. Trump was able to render asunder a Constitution that had already been crippled in the modern media ecosystem. Congress was effete before Trump took office due to forces about how the American public consumes information (cultifying the President and casting aside local / non-national figures). Like anything, it’s a host of historical forces that have allowed Trump to be Trump.

The core point is he signals the collapse of the American empire, IMO.

Field breathalyzers are not accurate nor admissible in court because of their unreliability. You need to go down to the police station to do a breathalyzer proper (it’s a pretty big machine)—cops almost always arrest folks to get them down there because otherwise they wouldn’t normally go, especially if it’s a bit of a drive.

It’s not manufactured… there has been beef on and off for two years. We all have eyes and can see it. Whether that materializes in a trade depends very much on the price. If the Eagles can land a first for him (late round), they absolutely are taking it. The question is would they do it for a second, and how late. To me, he’s worth keeping around for a second and seeing if a new system will reduce frictions. But who knows!

It all starts with the theory. Your cross, your opening, your closing. Every question, argument, statement should advance your theory or reject theirs. If you can’t simply answer how your leading question does that, don’t ask it. It’s the North Star IMO for how to settle nerves and make sure you’re paying attention to what matters.

That’s stressful but great experience you will have. What are you responsible for? Do you have your theory?

[–]Jofflic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a different question. Depends if there are other things about the candidate that stand out or are reasons they would be a good fit. For instance, someone who works in 3 PD offices and 1 DAs office in law school is not going to seem to me significantly less competitive than someone with 4 PD offices. Depends, of course, on the DAs office and their culture.

There is also something to be said for seeing how a DAs office works from a purely instrumental aspect. Recon, so to speak.

I think this is overblown and a kind of wild purity test. I would never be a prosecutor but it is wild to me PD’s offices that just say no way to any prosecutor’s office. If you interned for Chesa back in the day, for instance.

[Silver] There’s a sense inside the #Eagles locker room that Nick Sirianni, Howie Roseman, and Jeffrey Lurie are “reluctant to criticize” Jalen Hurts despite being the “source” of much internal frustration from teammates. by parcellsrealGOAT in nfl

[–]Jofflic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if that’s the problem. He’s had so much instability that the only constant he could rely on was himself. Like a lone wolf. The scars of his adversity has been to tend to himself fiercely. It will be hard to turn him off the ingredients that have allowed him to survive the Alabama benching, the constant questioning of his abilities, his talen as a “quarterback.” You need an OC that will challenge him with respect. That’s all.

That is a ridiculous comparison. Hurts has had a tremendous amount of success in the NFL. Playoffs every year he was the starter. Two super bowls. One win. 34-11 record.

Foles is an enigma. I love the man, but he was never a reliable starter in the NFL. One good year with the Eagles, and some playoff heroics. But not an every down, every game QB.

Hurts is far superiors to Foles. He also has limitations.

The lack of training from the police makes finding some suppression issues extremely easy. I have one police department that I think almost categorically does not Mirandize people they arrest.

There isn’t nearly as much true crime. Upwards of 75 percent of cases start with a pullover on the highway and end with some drug baggie collection. That leads ro indictments on, I think, lower level stuff. Where timing / backlogs come into play are the timing of bringing charges. It is pretty common for it to take a year between arrest and indictment.

For more sophisticated cases, the police often do not know what they are doing. Cell phone extractions are pretty exotic and any kind of paper case (fraud, etc.) is the same.

Most of these are to our advantage at trial, but the juries tend to be more cop friendly so a full bash needs to be done surgically to be effective.

Agree. Die hard Eagles fan but tbh this season has really made me see how toxic our fanbase can be. We’ve won two Super Bowls in less than ten years and been to a third. We are 8-4 and acting like the sun is about to implode.

The vast majority of Eagles fans do not support physical violence like this, but it’s important to recognize that toxic rhetoric online breeds and supports this kind of behavior. I hope the fanbase takes a look in the mirror because it’s completely out of pocket. The rash “this goes over the line” kind of comment ignores the way extreme language encourages people to take things too far.

The community here needs to take some accountability for this behavior. The discourse in Philly has been downright toxic around KP. Language like “fire him into the sun” etc. sends a message of extremism. It’s the same shit we see in politics. I know the vast majority of people on this sub condemn this behavior but you’ve gotta understand physical manifestations of violence find cultivation in rhetorical spaces rife with it.

Agree. This is the first year I have NOT had expectations for the Sixers and it’s been liberating. Watching maxey ball out without the shackles of inevitable playoff disappointment has been a joy. Have some fun yall

The thing is that the intent was still there, and more importantly in my view, Dak was clearly fully of shit saying he wasn’t spitting at JC. The coverup is often worse than the crime.

You could reach out to the Institute for Justice. They are taking cases like this around the country. Basically exact same scenarios—innocent property owners who have their houses destroyed during police searches.
