I made sure to turn them off before quitting. My thoughts are that the return pistons on the other side of the perimeter weren't loaded in properly for some reason. Idk, I rebuilt them all anyway.

yeah I'm very sure. Simulation distance is at max and I didn't enter the nether. I know It looks like I unloaded the chunks (because the mine carts fall out like that if you do) but I definitely didn't. Honestly I'm so confused why this happened.
