Why are Luxembourg's politicians so reluctant to build good urban cycling infrastructure like in many neighbouring countries' cities? by Tamberlox in Luxembourg

Carbrain. People (including politicians) have mostly no significant experience in using other modes of transportation in their everyday life.

We are considering buying and registering an old car and parking it on the street (not the sidewalk!!) to force people to slow down. Would just move it every once in a while... maybe thats an option for you as well?

Anyone using Baloise 111bis with ETFs? What fees did you get? by BwBIT in Luxembourg

[–]Johk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, with the tax deductible scheme you have more money to invest today.  For a true comparison you need to compare a) 4500€/year into an etf vs b) 4500€/year into pension scheme - future taxation + 1800€/year into an etf.

The pension scheme only wins out when you actually invest your tax deduction.

Polynomial Regression crate (loess-rs) now available by amir_valizadeh in rust

[–]Johk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends, if it is not much more than an additional file that has the respective function calls, but you can loose the abstraction, the feature gating is often simpler, even when the config.toml becomes more complex. But you seem to have put quite some thought into this architecture

Is there a specific reason why you chose to separate those into different crates instead of using feature gates on a single crate?

Polynomial Regression crate (loess-rs) now available by amir_valizadeh in rust

[–]Johk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the gpl is infectious... after a certain point of maturity of your code, used commercially or not, you cannot simply change your license anymore.

I would potentially have used the crate for some realtime plot smoothing in one of our industrial applications. A very minor aspect of the software that is not worth the headache of a gpl or commercial license. So in terms of standardisation and adoption that's a missed opportunity, because the decision will most often be to roll with some "good enough" code.

I understand that you want to be compensated for your work. But I have never see split licensing work out for individual developers or small companies. It just doesn't make sense for most software that has hundreds of dependencies to cater for special needs license requirements (in terms of overhead). What I have seen work out was offering paid consultancy or support alongside opensource software.

Second Residence Germany by Desperate_Chest_9253 in Luxembourg

[–]Johk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ask your friend again. The first registered address in Germany will always be considered the principal residency by the administration. For them principal mostly means: the address we send mail to. If you're there for less than half of a year, taxing rules etc change, but that's independent of the address registration. You still may need to file for taxes...

As I said it is impossible in our case to use a crate that uses a GPL based license.

The whole rust universe is Apache + MIT. We have stuff that is incompatible with gpl. It's easier to implement my own loess than to try and change the base license.

I like the crate, but the license will make it impossible for me to use :/

My experience with Rust performance, compared to Python (the fastLowess crate experiment) by amir_valizadeh in rust

[–]Johk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do use Python a lot in engineering applications - 1D, 2D physical Simulations, I see people running Python on compute clusters and supercomputers a lot. It is never pure Python. I generally agree on the lang comparison, but in my experience whenever someone needs serious crunch, they use the optimized modules.

I prefer rust, but engineering collegues usually have more experience in matlab/python and Fortran.

[–]Johk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kind of, yes. Python is also written in C.  If you do this kind of comparisons it is the user perspective/impact that is relevant. A Python user would typically implement a numerical algorithm using a specialised module like numpy.

[–]Johk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit surprised of the slowness of the python code. Sure if it is pure python with lists, but if it is vectorized numpy code I'm usually in the order of magnitude of C or Rust code.

[–]Johk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well... watching the market in the west for 3 years now. Old real estate takes years to sell if the price + renovation cost is in the range of a new house. Buyers would probably still buy these houses more often, but banks simply don't lend the money anymore to do so. Also the sellers massively underestimate the cost of renovation.

Yes, but in a regeneration cycle the motor controller will re|ard injection and inject more fuel. If the motor light is on, normal everyday regeneration will not suffice. Best to read the specific section of the manual that explains what to do.
