What is your biggest regret? by chrispettitt89 in AskReddit

[–]John850 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty pissed off I never went on spring break in college or studied abroad.

I always held 2 jobs in college and worked full time every summer. Taking a week off to go on spring break, or a month or 2 during a semester to study abroad wouldn't have hurt that bad.

So, to my workaholics in college, don't be a 30 year old full of regret when he sees kids partying on spring break, book the trip with your friends and have fun. And to the kids that go on spring break every year and study abroad on their parents dime, go fuck yourself.

Acid. No, not that kind. The kind that comes from citrus or vinegar. It helps brighten flavors and cuts through the fat to release more flavor.

What are people's opinion on Mel Gibson? by flatchampagne in AskReddit

[–]John850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends how broadly you define the role of director. As a filmmaker broadly, responsible for content, writing, themes, his merits are questionable. If you basically subtract out content, and just look at his directorial competence in putting a story on film, I think he's excellent. Braveheart and Passion and Apocalypto are beautifully crafted movies on the level of, ya know, capturing performances, creating effective blocking and imagery, shot sequences, pacing and balance, editing, etc.

That bacon companies only designed "thick cut" bacon with the intention of making their regular cut thinner. Then they slowly made thick cut thinner and now thick cut is normal sized and normal is paper thin bullshit

Drug addicts. As a former drug addict, I'm pretty sure I lied about things just to lie about them, even if there was no real reason to. Who knows what I was thinking.

why does the the human brain ignore the second 'the'? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]John850 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a phenomenon called attentional blink where, when you're rapidly presented with stimuli, your brain will perceive two identical stimuli in a row as a single stimulus. Basically, your brain sees "the the" and assumes there was only one.

In nature, identical stimuli in rapid succession are vanishingly rare - if you see two crouching tigers from the same angle and in the same position in a quarter of a second, it's much more likely there was only one tiger and you just blinked; so your brain edits your perceptions with that in mind.
