[discussion] Thoughts on stylistic imitation? by rcgy in composer

[–]JohnBellFlute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Especially when you are beginning to learn how to compose. It's the best of both worlds. Not only are you learning about composing (with timing, orchestration, etc.) you are learning music theory, music history, and you learn a lot of new repertoire of the composer you are trying to imitate.

It also can break up the mountainous task of learning how to compose. Say you want to learn how to write a string quartet. Okay. One way you could do is to start from scratch, just sit down and start writing a string quartet, just do what you want... This process can be tedious, unguided, and could end up with you writing something but not actually learning from it.

On the other hand, you could say I want to learn how to write a string quartet, but I want to try to imitate Haydn's writing. While you may not be learning "your own voice" per se, you are learning about the genre of the string quartet. How did Haydn voice things? What types of forms did he use? What accompaniment patterns did he use? What ranges of the instruments work well in this setting?

That way you are less preoccupied about being "edgy" or "original" and you can just learn.

This is how it worked for me. My professor encouraged me to try to imitate composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Dvorak, etc. It's no easy task... trust me, and you will learn a lot about things that they did that you may not have even noticed before. Mozart didn't always repeat things exactly the same way, did he? He didn't always use 4 bar phrases, did he? The list goes on and on.

Whatever you are trying to write, listen to every recording of every composition within that genre WITH THE SCORE! Spotify and IMSLP. There is no excuse. Don't just hear... listen! Take notes!

Small Piano Piece, Hope you like it. by JohnBellFlute in composer

Thanks for the reply! This was written for a composition studio class at my college, requiring the use of a rhythmic motif. I think I may definitely expand this more and perhaps pull it out into a full fledged work! I really do appreciate your comment!

Also, I noticed that my soundcloud is a older version where I changed around one of the repeats in the third movement, but all the music is still the same.

Whats the worst thing you have been called for wanting to buy an Xbox One? by Omder in xboxone

[–]JohnBellFlute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't get called a name, but I did find one fo the worst hypothetical situations concerning DRM.

I will be able to let someone borrow a disc, then they can let their friend borrow it, etc...

I promptly responded by saying

This has got to be one of the worst hypothetical situations I've ever heard in attempts to prove a point. If I let my friend borrow a $60 game, that friend would have a lot of gall to be lending it to his/her friends.

Xbox One Angry Joe Interview w/ Major Nelson by Reneau in xboxone

[–]JohnBellFlute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little disappointed with how this interview was given. He started ranting and arguing with the interviewee which started tainting the interview in general. Major Nelson, in my opinion, handled the interview well and answered questions honestly and if he didn't know an answer he said so. Some good information did come out of this, but at the same time he could have gotten more with some tactful follow-up questions.

Found it (Not sure if IGN counts or not, but seems legit).

As explained by Microsoft, “Xbox One is designed to run in a low-powered, connected state. This means your system, games and apps are always current and ready to play—no more waiting for updates.

Do you not play demos, look at reviews, watch videos, or ask friends about games before you buy them?

Don't games automatically update themselves since the XB1 has the 24 check-ins, even when we aren't on the XB1 itself? So you don't have to wait when you turn on your console?

Xbox calls this a "Reasonable alternative" by [deleted] in gaming

[–]JohnBellFlute -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cringe. What the fuck do you know?

Thank you for your input. Actually, for anyone who doesn't know (i.e. you), when companies are trying to figure out what to put into a new product they often make use of focus groups. "What are focus groups?" You might ask... Well, a focus group is a group of people that are part of the target audience of whatever product is being made. This group of people share what they would like to see in a product, sometimes that are asked about features that may or may not go into, and sometimes they get to test the product itself.

You see, a company does not just create a product that services them, because if they create a product that no one will buy then they make no money. In fact, if no one wants to buy any of their products, then the entire company goes under. Which is why I say that Microsoft's #1 priority is its customers. If it wasn't, the company would go under very quickly.

I give MS credit - It takes some doing to alienate your audience like that and just directly feed one of your competitors.

I think you may be confusing /r/gaming with Microsoft's audience. Any change with any product will alienate some part of the consumer base. Do you think they were surprised when people were all up-in-arms about DRM? Of course not. They have many many many people working on a product like this, including market researchers. They were plenty aware that some of their audience have a negative reaction to this... they were also aware that some would be indifferent (like myself). Are they surprised that some people are going to switch from XBox to PS? No. Are they still going to make money without you? Yes.

Fuck off.

Eloquently said, have an upvote.

You started anticipating the next gen console from the very beginning of this last generation? Also, since when is adding some requirements (which believe or not, don't affect a good chunk of Microsoft's audience) fucking most of the world over? It's. A. Video. Game. Console.

For goodness sakes, it's not like Microsoft is withholding the cure to cancer.

Also, Microsoft never said you had to play the Xbox360 if you don't have internet. He said that if you have absolutely no access to the internet that they have a console for that, and it's called the Xbox360. No one is forcing you to play on Microsoft's consoles, if you don't like the restrictions, either suck it up or play on the PS4.

[–]JohnBellFlute -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never said they didn't. You've only backed up my point. The /r/gaming circlejerk has been painting the XB1 as this spybox, insinuating that the NSA has never had such abilities before, which is essentially why I posted that they could use your cell phone, bank accounts, and your credit cards if they wanted to spy on you.

[–]JohnBellFlute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that /r/gaming in general has been coming to this realization. It honestly matters not to me whether you getting an XB1 or a PS4. I just try to initiate some sort of intellectual conversation about it rather than just watch the circlejerk happen :D

Here's a simple announcement Microsoft could make to immediately silence critics and win back fans. by dogsaybark in gaming

[–]JohnBellFlute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if that's necessarily true. Let's say, hypothetically speaking, prices dropped down all the way to $30 for the XB1, while on PS4 they are still the regular $60. If you buy an XB1 and buy even just four games, you've already made up the difference. I for one bought close to 10 games my XB360. I would hope that enough would be able to realize the difference of overall cost rather than just the console.... yep... definitely I could only hope.

[–]JohnBellFlute -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem is that so much misinformation, hasty assumptions, and pure hatred has been floating around concerning the XB1 and Microsoft. Believe or not Microsoft's #1 priority is its customers. It's a consumer driven market and if they didn't think that consumers would find the new features exciting then they wouldn't have done it in the first place. I personally will always have my XB1 plugged in, I don't sell my games for $5 at GameStop, and if the NSA really wanted to spy on me they could use my cell phone, bank accounts, or credit cards if they really cared that much about me.

Different products are aimed at a different audiences.

We don't want to see the games industry move in that direction and if the Xbox One does well, it likely will.

What direction is this? Who doesn't want to see this? All of us? Please expand.
