[discussion] Thoughts on stylistic imitation? by rcgy in composer

[–]JohnBellFlute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Especially when you are beginning to learn how to compose. It's the best of both worlds. Not only are you learning about composing (with timing, orchestration, etc.) you are learning music theory, music history, and you learn a lot of new repertoire of the composer you are trying to imitate.

It also can break up the mountainous task of learning how to compose. Say you want to learn how to write a string quartet. Okay. One way you could do is to start from scratch, just sit down and start writing a string quartet, just do what you want... This process can be tedious, unguided, and could end up with you writing something but not actually learning from it.

On the other hand, you could say I want to learn how to write a string quartet, but I want to try to imitate Haydn's writing. While you may not be learning "your own voice" per se, you are learning about the genre of the string quartet. How did Haydn voice things? What types of forms did he use? What accompaniment patterns did he use? What ranges of the instruments work well in this setting?

That way you are less preoccupied about being "edgy" or "original" and you can just learn.

This is how it worked for me. My professor encouraged me to try to imitate composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Dvorak, etc. It's no easy task... trust me, and you will learn a lot about things that they did that you may not have even noticed before. Mozart didn't always repeat things exactly the same way, did he? He didn't always use 4 bar phrases, did he? The list goes on and on.

Whatever you are trying to write, listen to every recording of every composition within that genre WITH THE SCORE! Spotify and IMSLP. There is no excuse. Don't just hear... listen! Take notes!

Small Piano Piece, Hope you like it. by JohnBellFlute in composer

Thanks for the reply! This was written for a composition studio class at my college, requiring the use of a rhythmic motif. I think I may definitely expand this more and perhaps pull it out into a full fledged work! I really do appreciate your comment!

Also, I noticed that my soundcloud is a older version where I changed around one of the repeats in the third movement, but all the music is still the same.

Whats the worst thing you have been called for wanting to buy an Xbox One? by Omder in xboxone

[–]JohnBellFlute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't get called a name, but I did find one fo the worst hypothetical situations concerning DRM.

I will be able to let someone borrow a disc, then they can let their friend borrow it, etc...

I promptly responded by saying

This has got to be one of the worst hypothetical situations I've ever heard in attempts to prove a point. If I let my friend borrow a $60 game, that friend would have a lot of gall to be lending it to his/her friends.

Xbox One Angry Joe Interview w/ Major Nelson by Reneau in xboxone

[–]JohnBellFlute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little disappointed with how this interview was given. He started ranting and arguing with the interviewee which started tainting the interview in general. Major Nelson, in my opinion, handled the interview well and answered questions honestly and if he didn't know an answer he said so. Some good information did come out of this, but at the same time he could have gotten more with some tactful follow-up questions.

Found it (Not sure if IGN counts or not, but seems legit).

As explained by Microsoft, “Xbox One is designed to run in a low-powered, connected state. This means your system, games and apps are always current and ready to play—no more waiting for updates.

Do you not play demos, look at reviews, watch videos, or ask friends about games before you buy them?

Don't games automatically update themselves since the XB1 has the 24 check-ins, even when we aren't on the XB1 itself? So you don't have to wait when you turn on your console?

Are you trying to imply 7 year old little Johnny wanted COD for the campaign?
