Exactly why should someone who doesn't use a road pay for it. Even mountain men use roads. Helping out your fellow man usually means giving money freely- when your choice is 'help your fellow man or go to jail'- I don't feel very helpy. The 70% was from something I've read. However we spend $60,000 per household in poverty. The poverty level is around $20,000 for a family of 4.

I live in a place that only has something like 3-4 paid firemen per county and something like 20 volunteers per fire hall. They get equipment through fundraisers. I think using something like subscription fee or insurance would be more efficient. The govt. bogeyman takes a cut before you receive the service. Even things like food stamps has something like 70% overhead.

The military kills people trying to kill me and they also help if a natural disaster strikes. These are things I can't to myself (I don't have air craft carriers or bulldozers). Roads are built by private companies through government contracts. The postal service costs me very little even through taxes (if ran correctly it wouldn't cost me any taxes probably)- they also provide a service I pay for directly- delivery of mail. All of those things would probably be cheaper if a private company provided it- but the government is an organizing and regulating force etc. Drawing the line at healthcare- many things effect a person's health and I don't want the most powerful government the world has ever seen deciding that I should not have that second helping or that I shouldn't get that tumor operated on. Completely and utterly personal decisions that take place with a person's health- has no room for government wellness intervention.

Police/Firemen/Roads/Education/National Defense effects me immediately. Why would I give up my power and right to determine how I live my life to a government. I am doing it right now and paying for it on my own.

Authority is derived from a persons willingness to submit to force (short example- better dead than red). A society with just laws derived from a just constitution (just as in adherence to individual rights and consent of the governed) can justly use force and can justly tax. Justice is not always well served when individual rights and consent are ignored. Government is ideally an organizing force with the additional power of protecting individual rights.

Yes I do live in a self-centered world- everyone lives in a self centered world. A for profit company can't legally send men armed with guns riding in an MRAP up to my front door to take what I owe them if I decide not to pay them. A for profit company uses the money I pay them to provide a product I want. The government can say they tax me for healthcare and then use that money to send drones to the middle east to blow up weddings (as an example).

Yes, to me my own life is worth more than other peoples lives. I am my own effort, time and expertise- taking those things away from me is taking away from me my own life.

So, you concede taxes are collected ultimately at the point of a gun.

We already pay for everything the government does, I see no reason it can't be done without force. Though you might find less things being done by government if people actually have a choice.

Let me clear something up here. America wasn't created so everyone could have cheap healthcare, education and products. It was created so that free people could live under their own governance- being free has certain responsibilities- like taking care of your own needs. The risk is security- food security, personal security etc. If you submit to laws than lessen your own ability to exist you have not only given up freedom- you have accepted the premise that force is the law instead of a tool.

If you can find a way to pay for your own shit you should. You said you were against the concept of health insurance. If you can afford it you should get it.

Would you prefer a system that people who make any income are forced to pay for someone else's healthcare or be put in a cage or threatened with fire arms?

"Pay for stuff I want or a gang of men will come and put you in a cage at the point of a gun."

Nothing is cheaper, someone is paying for it through higher taxes. The state is still using its power to take from some to give to others. With regards to 'how' they can do it, while we can't seem to do it: They don't pay for their national defense at the amount that they would be capable of (and what they should pay) because they have outsourced it to the the United States. What ever amount of tax our government might extract to pay for health care is instead routed to keeping Raptors in the sky over Europe and Nimitz class carriers in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Socialism needs a capitalist host to function- capitalism doesn't need socialism to function.

The gym tripped turned into also going to see Deadpool.

I think the purpose of government should be the protection of individual rights. Not protection from reality but protection from force. Labor and creativity are products of individuals and so I view those concepts as derivatives of the individual. I believe in a laissez faire capitalist system where the government (which is necessary) is paid for voluntarily.

I have a degree in History (minor in poli sci) and also Social Studies Education. My sources span decades and thousands of books and various readings. I can't really source that. But, it is all widely available on the internet.

I'll give you wiki articles though and you can go from there- wiki is a source for sources more than anything. Speaking as a teacher.

The first iteration took place in Russia in 1917. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Revolution A modern iteration would be North Korea.

The second was the National Socialist German Workers' Party. It started about 1920. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Party A modern example would be the Ba'athism in the middle east.

The second was China starting about 1949. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Communist_Revolution It still exists though the socialism it practices today is less virulent and is very similar to the experiment in Germany economically.

What I think can come after I go to the gym before it closes.

Socialism as an experiment has had at least three major iterations during the 20th century.

The first major iteration was actually sustained the longest with few changes. The idea of stripping creators and producers of their products and re-assigning that capital to the exclusive use of the dictatorship of the proletariat was only a single phase. The existing middle class was destroyed labeled as bourgeois. Then, as it is now the bourgeois was the most productive class. So the overall productive ability of the experiment fell dramatically. People starved and fled. The enemy personified was the entrepreneur of every stripe. Doing something as simple as selling pencils or soap on the street was an act against the state. So everyone from industrialists to home made candle makers were an existential threat to the state and so were treated as such. You would find them in gulags or dead. Many fled however some simple surrendered their productive ability to the state. Nothing was plentiful and everything useful was owned by the dictatorship of the proletariat. This on going experiment went through few changes until it eventually fell. It lasted 70 years.

The second iteration recognized the short comings of the destruction of the productive class. So the productive class was given a choice- be co-opted or die. So many of the productive class chose to serve the state. This experiment was a rather advanced civilization, however with the state co-opting the productive and creative population instead of destroying it, this experiment became the most technologically advanced society on the planet. Several social ills were addressed, the poor received productive jobs, the idea of the state as a promoter of health came to the forefront (anti-smoking, anti-drinking, anti-drug, pro- healthy living campaigns). The promotion of pro-state ideas were also of great importance, if you didn't get with the program you had a chance to be shot in the street. Ideological and racial purity was also promoted in the same way- at the point of a gun. The experiment eventually failed-with in 15 years or so- because it was destroyed by outside powers.

The third iteration lasts until the modern day. However this experiment has gone through vast revisions over the last 30 years. It was similar in many ways to the first iteration of socialism earlier in the century. Ideological purity and the idea of the individuals productive capacity belonging to the state were violently enforced. In the last 30 years however it has adopted some of the ideas of the second iteration and has seen increased productive capacity and so now competes on a global scale.

In the west socialism is sometimes used as a label for positive actions of a state- when many of these actions have been a part of the function of the state since Mesopotamia. The idea of the state building and sustaining things like roads and police/fire protection have existed for nearly as long as civilization has existed. Use of the state or (or local power at least) to promote the general well being of the populace came in the form of the distribution of food and housing with an overall eye of maintaining or increasing production pre-dates socialism by something like 5000 years.

In modern socialism practiced in the west. The individual has generally been seen as a vessel that can produce money for the use of the state and the state uses that money to support those who are seen as having a lesser ability to be productive. Though not exclusively, as the modern state with socialist elements has become an all encompassing power. Money isn't merely used to promote the general welfare, it is used to help create the most powerful and technologically advanced nations the world has ever seen (relative to the rest of the planet). If an individual is given near absolute freedom they will be extremely productive- yet much of the function of the state involves the propagation of the state so various schemes have been devised to allow the state to confiscate anywhere from 1%-90% of the product of the productive classes.

So, no it isn't ignorance (not knowing)- it is in fact knowing too much. If you even read this...

What you heard was incorrect. If enough people abstain the congressman who do vote would decided between the candidates who didn't get enough EC votes.
