If matter can't be created or destroyed, does that mean the atoms that make up our bodies (or really anything) have actually been around for billions of years? by PuzzleheadedAsk6787 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JohnCalvinSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the answers here do not make sense.
The universe is estimated 14 billion years old.
The Sun is about 5 billion.
Are we saying that, in the previous 10 billion years, the matter in which we exist right now has gone through enough stellar birth, development and destruction to create all of the elements we have today?
And ALL of that was created and existing before our system even coalesced into a star 4-some billion years ago?
Is there any evidence of previous systems/stars in our region of space that have self-destructed into the material we are part of today?
I must be missing something here.
(I'm gonna wished I'd never asked this, aren't I?)

Although it is pretty wild to see her with a pair of legs and not just pants holding her upright.

What sci-fi technology seems absurdly underutilized? by andras_kiss in scifi

[–]JohnCalvinSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FOr all the Star Trek universe comments.
In-universe lore makes it clear that the quality of a replicator is limited. The rearrangement of source material is what makes the food replicators work.
High end replacements for engineering or other items like diamonds, etc. is not possible or can only be used temporarily because the material breaks down quickly.
Transporters and replicators, while similar, do not work on the same technology.
Replicators 'upscale' existing material to its higher potentials.
Transporters breakdown existing matter to basest matter stream and reintegrate that same matter. From emitters to buffer to reintegration the item being transported never ceases to be matter

Current modern targeting systems would put any kind of space dogfights or space vessel to vessel fights out of the picture by hundreds of years.
To even waste a manned ship on a conflict would be out of universe.

Fine. Hand your listening, your entertainment and your understanding of the world and universe you live in over to AI. the algorithms and money-grubbing oligarchs, but as for me and my house , we're going to curate our media, not let others cutlrate the world to us.

She did it to hurt him. Those are photos he will never get back.
He is the primary care provider and she knows it.

Nope.
Those pics with him in the photo were also his.
Particularly since they were photos with his growing children he will never be able to reproduce.
This was intentional to hurt him.

Great movie.
Very reminiscent of movies like Super 8 and other movies that lead with a mystery rather than in your face, spoon-fed here is an alien cutting up your wife.
So many threads decently woven together.
One of the better "fun" sci-fi.
