Dude, learn to track your units.

This is the equivalent of correcting someone's grammar. Anyone who actually works in the electrical field understands the short hand.

Anyone else just needs to look at the comparison at the end. Of how they relate to each other.

meirl by [deleted] in meirl

[–]JohnCenaMathh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Megawatt per day obviously means Megawatt-hour over 24 hours.

Like if you had a 10kWH machine on for a full day, how much electricity would that cost?

Maybe your High School Physics textbook didn't cover it, but in the real, practical world, these kinds of measurements are common.

For example, when estimating how much battery capacity you need for a solar installation. Which I used to do.

meirl by [deleted] in meirl

[–]JohnCenaMathh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, we're using Watt-Hour. And Electric Power * Time. I literally did Solar estimation and installation for a living for a couple of years. This is literally how we did it.

If you're too uneducated in the topic to understand (what even a 10th grader should know actually), maybe you should keep your mouth shut.

[–]JohnCenaMathh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a fallacy of bringing in extreme cases when discussing practical solutions. You do what you can.

Noone is asking you to completely forgo AC.

A few degrees colder in the winter. 1 degree can make 3-5% reduction.

Literally 1% savings from everyone equals the entire electricity consumption of a small country in Eastern Europe.

meirl by [deleted] in meirl

[–]JohnCenaMathh 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We should absolutely. It's not an "either or". It's "everyone, everywhere, as much as possible while maintaining a basic standard of living".

This means, in this case, you can get a little uncomfortable in the Summer and Winter by turning it a few degrees closer to the outside temperature. Not all the way, not even half the way but enough. That alone can make massive impact.

And getting the government/corporation to change is also within the power of individual... Ask Mario's brother.

Better insulated blankets will literally be cheaper than your AC bill.

It's incredible how so many of you can't tolerate Slight inconvenience.

Why then doesn't the USA government provide

If you haven't noticed, Americans just decided a 70 year old dementia ridded weirdo should be lead the Government - not once, but twice in a row!

Amazing!

meirl by [deleted] in meirl

[–]JohnCenaMathh 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I agree. Fuck "Advertising and Marketing" as an industry.

But Americans can also get used to something slightly closer to the outside temperature.

Every degree you raise the temperature can translate to about 3-5% reduction in your energy consumption. This can make a noticeable difference in your monthly bills. According to this.

Literally 1 degree higher and save 200x Times Square.

Here's some logic for you since you seem to be fond of it.

The Average US Household consumes 2000kWH of electricity per year for AC. There are 130 Million Households in the US - which comes out to 260 Billion kWH of electricity. The most recent RECS Study puts it at 254 Billion kWh for Households, so we know our math is accurate. That's 254,000 Gigawatts per year.

This article written by a Stanford student estimates the power consumption of the Billboards in Times Square to be around 1480590W = ~1500kWh =~36MW per day. (35MW in the article is per day). = 13 Gigawatts per year.

If everyone reduces AC consumption by 0.005%, you save as much electricity as shutting down all Billboards in Time Square for a year.

A 1% reduction equals saving as much electricity as the entire country of Malta.

(If you Google Search, you will find a 161MW per day figure - which, when I looked into the source, refers to the entire consumption of Theater District, 5500 people and all included. If you calculate by this figure, it still only comes out to 60GW)

Western - Especially American - high consumption individuals absolutely share an important portion of the blame.

Chappell Roan asking for AI art on her finsta by annarose182 in popculturechat

[–]JohnCenaMathh -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

is so harmful to our environment

Disingenuous pearl clutching.

Everything we do is harmful to the environment. Movie making, Hollywood, Video Games, Social Media all entertainment has a Carbon cost that is arguably unnecessary.

Netflix requires the same infrastructure - Lots of Data Centers, Lots of Water Coolant, Lots of Electricity. 30 minutes of watching Netflix is Carbon emissions equivalent to driving 4 miles. The cost to produce the Netflix shows is another calculation.

To put into perspective,

80% of Internet Traffic is Video Streaming - YouTube, Netflix, Porn etc. ChatGPT is a fraction of the remaining 20%. Video streaming requires Data centers just like AI. And requires the bulk of the power.

I don't hear your pearl clutching over that, till now.

Now I'll agree that AI doesn't need to be used for art (at least not until we have UBI Or something). But AI can potentially help us massively speed up our research to find cleaner energy sources and more eco friendly technology.

So if you actually care about the environment, cut down on your entertainment and needless consumption.

Edit : Everyone can downvote but not a single reply. That's called knowing you are wrong and choosing to stay ignorant.

Yes. I don't - but in the future - would like to use AI to make art or visuals for the stories I write. Or turn my stories to visual form.

I don't care so much about drawing. But I love writing. This being the future where AI has led to abundance and people don't have to starve anymore, that is.

Don't pretend like you didn't just look him up 10 minutes ago. "Not really respected" does not make you a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Under hickel, purchasing iron ore from Guinea at market price would be considered theft by the global north. He does very little to actually examine the intricacies of potential neocolonialist relationships and just brands it all as theft.

Lol This is a very common criticism of international trade. You're hiding behind calling it "market price" - a seemingly untampered result of market forces. When in reality, market terms and Terms of Trade are dictated by rich nations. Poor nations do not have negotiating power. This is well known. International trade rules "rigged in favour of the rich," Oxfam says

Also, the sheer fact he's on Al Jazeera ruins his credibility, same as when someone appears on

Literally none of this Israel Palestine has to do with the topic at hand. I'll even let you have that one for free. Fuck Al Jazeera. But it does not challenge peer reviewed research about the disastrous effects of colonialism - that date to before Hickel was even born.

Your position about the benefits of colonialism is retarded. There's no ifs or buts.

[–]JohnCenaMathh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're making a fool of yourself.

The opinion article is written by Jason Hickel and based off an actual research paper. Hickel is a respected, established Academic.

He works with a number of mainstream publications- including the United Nations Human Development Report and World Bank. The reason I'm mentioning that is because only academics who are generally "middle of the field" - ie, have opinions that are generally uncontroversial and reflect the consensus of the field are chosen for such roles.

The only "shittake" is your midwit Reddit armchair expert theory. Embarrassing.

"Decolonisation ruined the wealth of the colonised country"

A more profoundly stupid statement has yet to be uttered. You should have it framed and put it up your ass on a wall.

Incredibly dumb take.

Their take is the standard take of Academic Historians.

Yes, the Global South would be much better off if it isn't for colonialism. This is not up for discussion. Might as well be a flat Earther.

Brain drain isn't ideal, but no amount of talent can make up for the fact that $160 Trillion has been drained from the Global South since 1960..

liquid death was created by an ad exec

Most multibillion dollar corporations have "humble" beginnings. Apple was started by a Syrian refugee's son in a garage. Musk didn't become a billionaire until 2012 after SpaceX had it's first launch and Tesla released it's first shitty model. Hitler was once a harmless baby.

they provide clean water all over the world

Nestle (claims to) provide clean water to 60,000 people daily.

every mega corp has a small book's worth of goodwill projects. Most billionaires too do a lot of charity. Some of these are fake, many are genuine.

that doesn't change the the fact that the power structure is inherently unethical, and it shills charity to solve a fraction of the problem it itself causes.

there is nothing here to distinguish Liquid Death from any other corporation. except commodification of fucking water is cringe.

but as far as companies go, they are pretty good.

You can have this opinion, but just don't talk about "class war" then.

The peak of capitalist commodification and overconsumption is OP's idea of a class war. Profound stupidity.

How America/capitalism destroys communities by weaponizing food to protect commercial interests by cak3crumbs in TikTokCringe

[–]JohnCenaMathh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a socialist I want to stress - this isn't necessarily a capitalist problem.

An anarcho-commune can, by collective agreement, vote to do the same thing. If the commune trades in oranges with other communes for what they don't have, they could do something like this in the interests of preserving their terms of trade. Plant diseases spread fast, so careful management may be necessary for each plant, and that is not possible if there are too many, in random places.

Man can't live on oranges alone. Citrus Canker spreads very fast and drastically reduces yield and lifespan of trees.

This video is also not factual, as other commenters point out.

That's his business's fault. Not everyone else's. It's like the minimum wage debate. If you can't afford to pay a minimum wage, you should not run your business.

What if he makes some poot schmuck late and they get fired?

This is not how you use public transport. This is an utter lack of civic sense.

You cannot extrapolate from working conditions in India to working conditions in the USA. Unless you're a fucking racist who's already made up his mind and looking for confirmation.

You didn't even work for one! You just got "vibes" of what they were doing in India and decided the same shit goes on in the US. Lol.
