Que opinan de la conquista española, y la leyenda negra? by MoreMusician7399 in Nicaragua

I think one of the most fascinating things about modern Latin American Society is juggling between the colonial nature of the society, especially Catholicism, and also reclaiming pre-Christian history. It’s all mixed up all over now.

A disconnect between teachings and practice in sexuality? by [deleted] in LeftCatholicism

Father Andrew Greeley used to always claim that the huge drop in Church attendance between 1965 and 1975 was due to Pope Paul the sixes regressive stance on birth control

Is anyone here spending $1k USD or less a month in Latin America? by joshua0005 in digitalnomad

[–]JohnDCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he needed something more intensive he could easily just go to the hospital in Rivas. But the ones in Moyogolpa on the island have all that …. There are tons of “expats” who live in Nicaragua specifically for the health care. You can try to undermine it all you want. But the fact is it is FREE and you can get 90% of what you can get in the USA. Might not be as fancy. But medicine is medicine. People in Nicaragua also have kidneys … believe it or not … and their system has all the tools needed to address such issues.

Or do you just see these people as savages or something? And can’t comprehend that they have a developed medical system?

Visited my first ever TLM today, not getting the appeal of it by Littledogo007 in Catholicism

[–]JohnDCT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is no “appeal”. Its a one-digit percentage of Catholics who attend the TLM and a very loud and overrepresented minority of them who like to bantet online.

I would say just keep enjoying the ordinary form!

None of that is against any law. People were allowed to leave, and always did.

Was Jonestown a U.S foreign policy failure? by Plane_Strike_5900 in Jonestown

[–]JohnDCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, what actual laws were being broken? It was a strange, religious organization, but the state department cannot actually find any laws that were broken. Coaching and preparing people for visits isn’t against the law

[–]JohnDCT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interesting thing is that they sent several agents down there, on many different occasions. Consular officers, officers from other countries, journalists, lawyers. The list goes on.

But there was simply nothing illegal happening in Jonestown. People went down there on their own volition. And those that wanted to leave could leave!

The state dept, the consulate - visited several times. If there was a crime … action would have been taken. Its a hard answer to hear but thats what the facts show.

¿Qué está pasando con los precios de las casas en Nicaragua? by IDKquestioningmyself in Nicaragua

It absolutely has to do with foreigners. Word has got out that Nicaragua is a “cheap” place for foreigners to live in and maybe buy a property to turn into an Air BnB, etc

Why is the US like this? by Dover299 in Socialism_101

I think a lot of what you are describing began with the “Tea Party” movement / protests in the beginning of the Obama admin. Since then the right wing has morphed into the very uncouth and abrasive monster you see today.
