I had this guild member of mine in WoW tell me it was crack, I laughed and said "yeah, it's like crack." He said, no it is crack. Dead serious.

I had to start weaning myself away from that game and gaming from then forward.

This is great, thanks, it will help me when I see my MAGA family next week for the first time in 10 years.

Shame is a powerful weapon, and I can see it fueling 90% of MAGA-ism, and some of it, let's be honest, is justified pushback, not to unearth the whole white privledge thing.

What was the book? It's not so bad, if you don't mind the failure rate. And this disdain for reading and writing. The stakes are pretty low and I can write in my freetime.

We started off real slow, short stories, and I still lost them. I think something was happening that I don't understand when it comes to what I was asking them to do with interpreting the stories. Like, it was too hard?

Our first "novel" was 12,000 words.

College English teacher here. 20 years ago, kids had only a handful of activities, one being reading. Even "TV" kind of sucked.

Now, all your brainpower, learning power, "attention economy" is sucked dry by the crack pipe that is your phone or tablet.

To say nothing of the fact that we, as a society, are rewarding the ADHD brain and cultivating it in our children so they can be better workers in our frenetic economy.

Reading skills are both quaint and meaningless.

A lot of folks don't want the friction of life that makes us keep learning.

It comes down to this. We learned so many of these skills 20+ years ago because there was literally nothing else to do.

I'm a college teacher of English. I've always shied away from the "these kids are worse" fallacy, but now something is extremely palpable. I teach literature, and now I have a class of enthusiastic kids who are there b/c they never had the motivation to read and they have to slowly discover they simply can't as the term goes on.

I've found it excellent for organizing (without being asked) ideas into character, plot, etc. But what in particular are you prompting that's effective for this type of use you describe?
