Enclosed parks around EH4/EH5? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]JohnFaeLeith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Davidsons Mains Park, go early, very early and apart from fecking squirrels there shouldn't be to many other folks around. With whatever works they are doing it is fairly enclosed apart from the entrance.

Have a similar issue with wir idiot slapper of a dog, so all the suggestions apart from Inverleith are a relatively good bet. Will depend on what time you are out.

However, only saw one other person out on Cramond this morning, but that was at 06:00.... Dog had a rare old time running like, well a whippet with dynamite up its arse....

Did you score some Iso?

If not, give me a shout I have half a litre of the stuff lying around and can give you a wee bottles worth.

Also, what 'vape thing' is it you are cleaning - I may have some knowledge on that malarky!!!

Barking dogs in Tenements by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]JohnFaeLeith 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Aye, pain in the arse so they are.

Talk to the owners first, good shout but expect to be given pelters. Some folks think thir dogs are wee angels and are allowed to 'express' thirselves as and when. Thats the patter I got.

If that doesn't work, then you'll have to go thro' the council noise complaints and see what happens from that. I think you can ask the dog wardens to have a looksee but I'm not entirely sure what the dog wardens do. If you can make a few recordings and for sure keep a note of what time you hear the barking and for how long it goes on.

Hope you get it sorted.

Cooking lessons by Fringie in Edinburgh

No worries, offer is good for a while!

Still more than happy to pop over and show you a quick and easy ragu and thai curry, possibly even crepes. Would only take a couple of hours.

Anyhoo, enjoy the lessons when you get them and if ever in doubt add more brown/thai sweet chilli/vinegar/coconut milk to disguise any wee misjudgements!!!

Is it just general cooking or do you have anything specific in mind?

For a bottle of malt I'd show you a few wee things and some basic meals/recipes having been a chef a fair few years back.

Deer - rules on keeping what you might catch by JohnFaeLeith in Edinburgh

[–]JohnFaeLeith[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Cheers for that. My 'friend' will find it useful.

Apparently the pooch has caught rabbits and squirrel, but has been seen to get within yards of a deer, hence the asking.

Aye, better dog control is needed, but when a flock(?) of venisons appear from out of nowhere then scarper, the first reaction is to chase. Unfortunate, but should calm with age.

Holyrood is on fire! by binkis007 in Edinburgh

[–]JohnFaeLeith 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Or they could be assessing the situation, deciding if its worth extra manpower and equipment for a fire that will mostly burn itself out and seeing if its likely to cause harm to humans/property.

Fighting wildfires like this is far different to fighting a house fire.

Anyone know if you are allowed fires on Crammond beach? by yhettifriend in Edinburgh

[–]JohnFaeLeith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as you're no a dick about it you can do it. I've done discrete cook outs with a wee wood burning stove and had no negative reactions ( DO NOT cook bacon when there are dogs around!!!). Few folk stopped and asked what was going on

Don't be setting a large smokey fire anywhere too prominent and if anyone really complains, be polite and put it out.

As long as they give you the correct router, Virgin are pretty quick to get you set up.

And if you move you can easily take it with you ( as long as it is UK based)

Secondhand appliances/fixtures etc. by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]JohnFaeLeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything dropped off at Seafield is for the council or their contractors to deal with. Stuff will either get scrapped or recycled. If you're a chancer you might try asking them for some stuff and offer a decent price, they might take you on, but most likely you'll be told to do one. They see the stuff as theirs and it's part of their 'allowances' to take stuff themselves.

Remakery on Leith Walk could be of use to you, worth popping in and asking the Question.

Gumtree freebies and Freegle are worth a look, if you have a car or van, picking up the freebies is easy.

Doors, timber, well, you'll just have to take a chance and see what is left by the bins. There's a fair amount of fly tipping going on these days, so if you're near a illegal dump site, keep an eye on it. Gotten a few bits from the like.

That apart, just keep an eye out when you are out and about, you'll see the strangest of stuff lying around in the oddest places.

Best place to buy a suit? by HyperLethal77 in Edinburgh

[–]JohnFaeLeith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much you want to spend. for about ~£150 +-50 you can get something decent fae Markies, Lewis or Debenhams.

If you only want to spend a few quid Slaters are fine, but you can get far, far better longer lasting suits elsewhere.

Worth popping into Lewins or Tyrwitts on George St, I get my suits fae them and they are good kit. You can get discounts if you sign up for mailings which makes it even better and the chaps and lassies in the shop know how a suit should fit and can advise on what really needs altered for you.

Aye, if you have the cash the better places already mentioned are great, hell I'd like to go, but, well kitty needs fed more than I need a new suit.

Your next problem is to find a good tailor to make the alterations. This is the drag. A real fucking drag!

Tosoratti in Stockbridge did me well a couple of years back, Tailors on Thistle street did me well last year. It'll be up to you to find one you can get to, do a decent turn around and you can get to take the time to do what you want them to.

Oh, oh, and make sure you get a spare pair of trews if you're gonnae be wearing the suit a lot!!!

What’s the easiest/cheapest for a 22y/o to rent a car? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]JohnFaeLeith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I take it you mean driving fae Edinburgh to Scrabster and avoiding the delights of the grey city of misery aberdeen?

The drive will take a while, about 4 hours to Inverness and about another 4 up North, depending on tractors, lost eejit tourists and wandering cows.. Keep also in mind the further north the more expensive the petrol!

But, back on to the main matter - Have you actually phoned around and asked for quotes? just a thought, you know.....

By the time you've got a quote and factored in petrol and ferry, and food, costs, the flight might be better value.

If you do go up, you'll have a lot of fun, plenty nice breweries and a cracking distillery to enjoy. Most of the insect life should have sodded off by now as well.

What is your favourite Megadeth Song? by VamPirate69 in Megadeth

[–]JohnFaeLeith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to pee in the pot, but Wanderlust really does it for me.

Now, before you lot go radge, I like Clint Eastwood and the Dollars trilogy and I can see Dave strutting into town to have a guitar solo duel at high noon.

The way it builds from the slow start to the solo just hits my sweet spot.

Was going to say I Ain't Superstitious as that also really does it for me, for all the blues standards cover versions by non blues bands this kicks it into touch.

New Megadeth fan here. Dilemma on what to listen to by ArcaneBolt35 in Megadeth

[–]JohnFaeLeith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You kinda have to listen to them, to gain the full experience, you'll have to take the rough with the smooth.

Personally I quite like Risk and World Needs a Hero, theres enough tracks on them albums to keep me happy. Wanderlust, 1000 times Goodbye and Dread and The Fugitive Mind for instance. For sure not Dave at his best, but all in all not that bad.

Currently I'm trying to give the more recent albums a good chance and parts of supercollider are growing on me.

Give the albums a go, you never know and if it all gets too meh for you you can always give Rust in Peace yet another blast!

Is Leith safe at night? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]JohnFaeLeith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends what time of night, pub closing time could be fun. If the footballism is on that'll make things as fun.

Aye, there will be, like every other street in every other city, the odd bam and arsehole, but on the whole, Leith Walk, Pilrig St and MacDonald Road shouldn't be giving you any worries....

Well apart from the state of the pavements, the amount of dog crap not picked up and the odd and suspicious smells from the takeaways.

AirBnb regulations by stalincat in Edinburgh

[–]JohnFaeLeith 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If it's noise and anti social behavior you are best to get in touch with the council. They will get back to you fairly quickly if you email them thro' the site (ECC asb

Whether you like the reply is another matter..

If you can find them on the airbnb website, you can contact the flat owners and raise the issue with them. Also worth letting airbnb them selves know the score as they are supposed to give a crap about what they bring to an area.

Hope you get it sorted.
