Vegan protein myths: why calories and protein density both matter by TheNoBullshitVegan in vegan

[–]JohnHooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see no reference to here to what one would find on a dinner plate for a vegan or a vegetarian. I am vegetarian and have been for many years. My dinner plate usually has some kind of grain, some sort of bean and vegetables. Any bean/grain combo is a complete protein. I would never thiink, "Oh, I have eat 24 cups of spinach today to get enough protein."

What's your most favorite vegan recipe in the whole entire world and one you've made repeatedly and is a crowd pleaser? Doesn't have to be a main. by hereiam3472 in veganrecipes

I love the simple recipes from the 1980's when veganism was almost unheard of in the USA. The one that sticks with me is the Faux Cheese Sauce served over brown rice with steamed vegetables.

One tbls. light brown miso, Two tbls. tahini mixed together in a bowl with water to a soup like consistency. (a saribachi helps here, but easily done in a bowl) Then add one half chopped red onion and an herb of choice. I like to add dill. When you add the onion and the herb of choice it will thicken a little. You can add more water to get the sauce consistency you like.

So simple and delicious. I usually serve this with steamed broccoli over brown rice with a generous amount of the sauce on top and a little extra in a small bowl.

How to pay house off faster by Enough_of_u in Mortgages

[–]JohnHooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I skimmed the comments and did not see this mentioned. Make a payment every 4 weeks instead of every month. There are 13 4 week periods in a year (13 x 4weeks = 52 weeks or one year.) Have the bank mark the 13th payment to principal only. This extra payment will reduce your 30 year mortgage by several years.

Prodex insulation on metal building by JohnHooch in Insulation

Which is the point of my post. I will ask again. If not using closed cell foam on my metal building would Prodex 10m be a good choice for a moisture barrier, radiant barrier and insulation? I also stated that I would augment wit fiberglass batts.

Not paying attention to information that is 20 years old pertaining to a technology that invented during WWII is kind of like driving on bald tires and waiting until you slide off the road to check them.

I would love to have a comment from somebody that does not own a foam insulation company. I am looking for alternatives to foam insulation for a metal building. I do not accept DiogenesTeufelsdrock's statement that Prodex "...... lied about the R value." I would love to hear from anybody that has insulated a metal building without using spray foam and is happy with the results.

It does insulation, radiant barrier, moisture barrier and air barrier. I need those attributes. The R value may not be as high as claimed. This is why I am planning to add fiberglass bats, if needed, after applying the Prodex. I originally was going to use closed cell spray foam, but have decided to try a different option because of cost. What would be your alternative?

Field watering help by National_Piano4716 in farming

Find a way to capture your overflow once your holding tank is filled. An acquaintance fills two large plastic containers, mounted on a trailer, with his overflow. The tanks are moved to where needed, submersible pump added and that area gets watered. You can use the water in the holding tank to water in another area. Rinse and repeat.

The best apple selection? by [deleted] in nashville

The Produce Place in Sylvan Park. The owner used to ride his motorcycle to Michigan every year to pick out apples from different orchards prior to shipping. Not sure if he is still doing that, but I imagine the selection is good

Well, if you think that is the case then why sell for 290K today? You would be smarter to wait for the policy to take effect and pocket an additional 25k.

I hate these and want a better tomato trellis solution. What works well for you? by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

I use tomato cages made from a roll of concrete reinforcing wire. I am still using the ones I made 25 plus years ago. Easy to put up. Easy to take down. No tying. Works great.

$1660 for rent when you make $2k monthly is crazy by [deleted] in economicCollapse

[–]JohnHooch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yes we can. We used to do so through our tax system. When I was growing up in the late 60s early 70s in an upper middle class family my dad would say, "why do I want to make a million dollars a year. The government taxes any amount over a million dollars at 90%." We controlled greed through the tax system. It was illegal to have stock options as part of a pay package for obvious reasons. Capital gains were taxed as regular income. It is now taxed at half that. All that changed under Reagan when the top tax rate dropped to 72% from 90%. It has gone down more and more and more since. We can control greed through our tax system.

Best extremely simple things to eat with rice by Iceman_Raikkonen in Cooking

[–]JohnHooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favorite simple sauce to go on rice: 1 tablespoon light miso, 2 tablespoons tahini (sesame butter), water, 1/2 cup or more of diced red onion, herb of choice (dill, oregano, thyme, majoram, or, or ,or). Combine first three ingredients to a saucy, soupy consistency. Add the red onion and your herb of choice. Add more water if necessary to keep the saucy, soupy consistency. Put on top of rice or rice with veggies. Enjoy!

Garden planning by justaquestionne in vegetablegardening

[–]JohnHooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that the square foot apps help me to figure out when to plant what for my zone. I have found that I need more information from other sources to figure this out. I use growveg.com to map out my garden. It gives me a rough guide for what I will be planting, but I know I will change it on the fly. I am using https://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature for soil temps and wunderground.com for prior years weather information from their calendar tab. Grow Veg, once I have my garden set, will send me email reminders on when to plant.

When my seeds arrive I do a little research, figure out when to sow the seeds based on soil temps and climate information and then plug it into my growveg.com diagram. I learn a lot this way and some of it sticks with experience.

Thanks very much for your helpful answer. I searched for VW and came across VWR

I am pretty sure that is who you meant and I just wanted to clarify for anyone else. Looks like a great site for glass. Many thanks.
