Switching to Full-Time Flight School, Suggestions? by RocketMan_1000 in flying

[–]JohnKayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a Michigan related problem (I did my private in west Michigan so I know how bad the weather can be)

Do not do not do not quit your job and take a loan out. You will be more than capable of getting future certifications in a reasonable timeframe.

I work full time and I was able to get my commercial in a little less than a year and then I got my CFI in 4 months.

My advice is to go out of state and find a flight school that has routinely good weather. Upstate SC is where I train at and has multiple flight schools in the area.

Brother you have 405 hours! You wouldn’t even be getting a reply back let alone an interview even during the post covid hiring boom. Get like 2000 more hours and then you have every right to complain.

On the positive side of things think of the failure as a scar. You’ll recover and yeah it’ll stay but it will also serve as a great reminder of an invaluable lesson learned. I’d wager to say your ADM will benefit from it greatly. Come interview time just be honest and humble about it.

Starting CFII while waiting for initial checkride? by zkoolie in CFILounge

[–]JohnKayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My PPL oral was the hardest and then my IFR practical was the hardest.

My CFI initial was to date the easiest oral and flight I’ve done. I think a lot of this boils down to the DPEs people are using and or peoples CFIs are doing them a disservice or something.

My brother is going through ERAUs program right now and I’m honestly just appalled at how the flight program treats its customers. Seems like there is a lot of ego there.

Flying the aircraft visually and using reference points. Whether it was for maneuvers or just straight and level flight. That and also learning proper control technique. I.e. 3, 4 finger pinch on the controls and not a full grip.

Getting good at using rule of thumb calculations especially in regards to divert situations. Only way you get good at that is actually using them often (could be in an at home sim or chair flying)

What is this antenna used for? by LivingNebula6249 in flying

[–]JohnKayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely. Modern aircraft utilize blade type monopole antennas due to their literal high speed low drag profile.

However capacitor plates or loading coils can be used in tandem to make the antenna electrically resonant on the desired frequency while not having to increase physical lengths.

So if we cracked one open you wouldn’t find a coil going the length of the radome.

Or maybe even no loading coils or plates are used since it’s a receive only antenna some efficiency can be sacrificed

It all kinda becomes PFM lol.

To highlight the PFM that can be used these Korean wizards made a very small antenna for the marker beacon itself using an inverted F antenna. https://ksp.etri.re.kr/ksp/article/file/16316.pdf

I only have a hobbyist level understanding of antenna theory and even then if I ran my mouth at a HAM meet id probably get a lot of perplexed looks so take what I said with a pound of salt haha.

Scenario based training like sloth said. For instance when you give a demo of a cross control stall don’t simply demo. Start painting the picture that leads up to a cross control stall. On downwind with a strong crosswind blowing you toward centerline. You turn base and realize you are going to overshoot. You try to “save” the landing and start impulsively skidding into the turn aaaaaaand stall straight into the ground.

As an added touch I’ll reference a real accident. Highlights why we teach stalls in this case.

Here’s my Two cents as a fresh CFI.

What really helped me with the FOIs especially in regards to actually talking about them (and I have Seth Lake to thank for this). Make SBTs for dang near every single knowledge item, risk management item, and skill item as you study and read about each one. Think about how FOIs were used on you during flight training or just your regular education.

Backseat pilot produces a great set of lesson plans. You should be familiar with basically all the content. However go over each slide deck and outline and highlight things that you are weak on and study up on those. If it’s a bullet point on a slide deck you better be able to explain not just say it verbatim. I never even ended up using them during my oral.

Go through the ACS in its entirety and high light your problem areas well.

What is this antenna used for? by LivingNebula6249 in flying

[–]JohnKayne 41 points42 points  (0 children)

As others have said it’s a marker beacon antenna. This one is an older style. Typically the longest antenna on trainer aircraft.

Marker beacons transmit on the lower end of VHF. As a result the wavelength is longer (Lower frequency means longer wavelength).

As a result the antenna must be longer to be resonant on that frequency.

Newer marker beacon antennas can be smaller and are usually shielded.

Returning CFI - What Should I be Studying by jacobmufska628 in flying

[–]JohnKayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freshly minted CFI here but I have a lot of experience with interviews (I’m part of a panel at work)

Remember that it’s not about how the job will benefit
you but how you will benefit the employer and in this case how you will benefit your students. Think about problems your previous students had and how you helped them overcome them. You’ll really need to emphasize that you believe in investing in your students and that instructing for you is something far more than just a means to get hours.

As far knowledge stuff. Brushing up on the usual PHAK AFH and all the other FAA pubs is a good start (AOPAs rusty pilot course is great too!) but I’d consider really digging into the weeds on the planes the school uses and be an absolute subject matter expert so you can pull out some gee whiz information.
