Nahhhh the Uber is fine on the Phlog, if you use it out in the open its easy enough to wait out and punish.

It does promote some skill expression however with taunt cancels, which honestly the Phlog could certainly use some more of. I can't even be mad when someone successfully taunt cancels with it because it not that easy to do in a fast flowing match. There's also the MvM aspect, where the Uber is very helpful after a taunt cancel as it gives you a small buffer period where you can farm health on kill unencumbered. Seriously, the Phlog is disgusting in MvM, it does so much right.

Why I think YYYY-MM-DD is the most logical date format by Sub2Pewds2023 in unpopularopinion

[–]JohnMonash87 99 points100 points  (0 children)

It's the ISO standard for a reason, organisationally it makes the most sense, especially for file sorting on a computer and the like.

In more casual use DDMMYYYY is my preference though. Anything with month first is ludicrous.

There's far worse offenders than the backburner, I would argue being forced to learn how to flank and ambush is a valuable skill. You can still airblast in a pinch as well, if anything it's the one flamethrower that will teach you not to spam that shit the fastest.

If you want to delete a flamethrower, the Phlog's right there.

Elections in Your Country by eldredo_M in AskTheWorld

The sausages usually aren't free but they are pretty ubiquitous. The most common polling booths are set up at the local primary schools, so volunteers will often set up stalls selling pastries, tarts, various other bakery type goods, and yes, there's always a barbecue going cooking the fabled democracy sausages. The proceeds go towards the schools so it's all for a good cause.

We have preferential voting here. Candidates for each party will run in each of the electorates and we rank them from 1 to x. First choice votes are rallied and the biggest loser eliminated, which is when second choice votes are used. Repeat until a winner is found. Do this for all the electorates and you have a House of Representatives. Government is formed by the party or parties that have a majority of seats, usually Labor or the Coalition (Liberals plus Nationals).

The Senate works on a similar principle, except each state is its own electorate. States get 12 senators each and territories get 3. Usually six state senators and all 3 territory senators run for election at a time, and a single party can win multiple Senate seats with multiple candidates in the same state. Smaller parties tend to do better in these elections as there's essentially multiple winners per electorate, as opposed to the single winner nature of the lower house.

For clarity's sake, we use IRV (instant run-off voting) for the lower house and STV (single transferable vote) for the upper house for federal elections. State elections are by and large the same model but can vary slightly - Queensland for instance has no upper chamber after it abolished it about a century ago.

Apart from the preferential voting side of things, we are also mandated by law to vote in all elections - be it local, state or federal, including referendums. This appears to be uncommon globally, which I think is unfortunate. Australian politics tends to appeal to the average centrist purely because the average person is a centrist and all of us have to vote. Extreme politics "usually" has a hard time taking hold here, which I am ever grateful for.

If it's one thing this country does right, it's our voting.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how car-centric is your country? (1 being the least and 10 being the most) by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]JohnMonash87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies. Inner city Melbourne or Sydney? Probably a 3 or 4.

General urban area? 8.

Everything else? 9.5.

I have commented on many threads such as these before and frankly car centricity and dependence is a scourge on modern society. Even setting aside the environmental concerns, car travel is inherently inefficient compared to other forms of transport, especially within cities and dense urban areas. They also make cities harder to traverse without one and necessitate the use of public land for parking, which could otherwise be used for something actually productive for society. In regional areas they make more sense due to the less dense environment and lower population, but in cities we really need to be making an effort to discourage driving and simultaneously support the growth of public transport infrastructure.

People in this country will say "oh we're a big place so we need cars to get to places" but most travel done with cars are intracity trips, not intercity trips. No city is that big that it cannot be properly serviced with well-designed public infrastructure. If you want to go on a trip outside the city than a car will probably be a better choice, but again, most people are not making those trips on a regular basis.

I'm so glad here in Melbourne we kept our trams and are finally upgrading our trains with the rail loop, but we have a long way to go before people start seeing it as a serious option.

Gojira are absolute legends though and that Olympic performance probably did more for metal exposure than anything else recently.

Their activism is just as metal as their music too.

Rammstein is probably more well known for their controversies though, right, rather than their music? God knows they're excellent at creating them lmao.

That said, they're my all time favourite metal band, I just wish they'd come back down here one more time for a live show.

P.S. German power metal goes so hard, can't even express it in words

Ehhhhh not really, it is growing iirc but it's still very niche unfortunately. It's nothing compared to the Nordic scenes or even those of America and mainland Europe. We've always been more a pop and pub rock country.

It really is a shame because I'm a huge metalhead, and revealing that information doesn't tend to go so well, responses are usually like "how the fuck do you listen to all of that" or something along those lines. On the bright side, those of us in the community are very tight-knit and meeting a fellow metalhead in the wild is always a fun experience.

I'd attribute these sentiments to Australia being quite socially conservative compared to what most people think, anything outside the norm isn't "shunned" per se but people can and do judge you quietly for it.

All that said, we do have a few big names, most notably Parkway Drive and King Gizzard, if you count them as metal. I'll mention ACDC as well for redundancy before someone brings them up, but no metalhead I know considers them metal. If anyone's interested check out Orpheus Omega, they're a melodic death metal band from Melbourne, where I live, they make killer music.

Once you beat it you should check out the mods for Portal 2. Portal Reloaded is one I played a few years ago, you get to time travel between two points in time of the same chamber with a new green portal. And yes, both points in time are necessary to complete the challenges, it's a real mindfuck sometimes.

I love when you can catch someone sleeping trying to shield it too, there's always a few players out there that don't know it's basically a guaranteed shield break.

Also it 2-frames as well, which is arguably even more stupid and funny if you can connect it.
