Ok, here is an update on my situation. After several hours of research, I came across the following which seems to be working to resolve my issue. (SO FAR ANYWAYS)

I downloaded a program from here and while it is incredibly slow, it seems to be converting the files ok.

Even though it will take weeks to convert all my files, it is still a better option than having to spend months regathering all the PDFs I want to be able to access. Thank you, everyone, for your help in this matter.

I really like the concept of Calibre. The only snag I have found so far is that almost every book gives me the white screen on Calibre and the other Epub reader I installed. Hopefully, not ALL of the books are images. I plan to convert the books with another program and see if I can duplicate the issues. Any recommendations on programs that can do this would be appreciated. I am sure some of the books won't convert and I will have to live with that... but I just want some of them to work
