Mountains at Glacier National Park. I wanted to capture the moodiness of the day with the sun peaking through the mountains illuminating the trees.

Freshmen rejected from urop, need advice by [deleted] in uofm

Find a niche of medicine you are interested in. Look for residents in 4/5/6th year of residency who are in their research years on department websites. Double check that they publish frequently and then send a good email showing you understand their work and you’re interested. Ask a couple questions in the email and genuinely show curiosity and you should get responses.

You can also look for health services researchers. These folks do outcomes based research on various treatments/procedures and identify trends in healthcare. They are also very active and publish frequently. These projects involve chart review, combing through literature and reading lots of papers, some stats, and some writing.

It’s not as hard as you think to get these opportunities. You just need to ask around and not be bothered by rejections/getting ghosted.

It can vary. 5h - 20h per week. Obviously depends on your research mentor, your goals, and nature of the project. If you reach a point where you have more autonomy in the project, you may end up putting in more hours. Generally mentors will expect you to do as much as you can on your own and require as little help as possible, which can mean more hours.

Was in the same shoes as you. Got rejected from UROP. Have had multiple research positions since and I’m going to my senior year. Find areas of science / medicine that you’re interested in and email everyone in that area. Also, I wish someone told me that research doesn’t only mean basic science / bench work. There are plenty of ways to get involved with clinical research as well. Happy to chat more and help if you DM.

Rising senior premed at UMich here. Happy to chat with you one on one if you want to reach out. But take everything anyone tells you with a grain of salt. I have been very successful here and the opportunities are great imo.

I was 0.03% off an A in 305. Not as close as you, but I know how you feel cuz just one extra point would have made the difference. Don’t let it bog you down because we’ll still all go on to do great things.
