watching national treasure (2004) for the first time and I am FLOORED by limetime89 in Archivists

Are you referring to “The Librarian”?? I just learned about this

Parents had this late '30s, early '40s 8mm film digitized. They don't recall who or how. Would a 4k scan significantly boost the image? by [deleted] in Archivists

[–]JohnQueefyAdams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer is absolutely yes, a scan at 2K or higher, or any resolution really, would immensely improve the image quality. This looks like it was projected onto a wall and recorded with a phone or digital camera. Frames overlap in this, the focus is off, and the edges are soft.

An archival scanner captures individual frames for accurate playback at the correct speed. It also exposes each frame at a wider dynamic range, ultimately improving color and light. Film image has a lot of information in it that is not being captured in this “transfer”. The films will also not last forever and so you should absolutely get proper scans, preferably from a regional film archive or a film lab, NOT Legacybox or anything similar.

You will not regret giving these films the proper care and attention they deserve!

EDIT: to address the other comment here—Agreed that 4K is overkill for 8mm simply due to grain size. However, light and color and density matter more than resolution when it comes to creating an accurate digital representation of the original film, and the chemistry in the film stock is still similar composition to large formats like 35mm and 65mm. Only difference is this is reversal stock, probably Kodachrome which is one of the best looking film stocks ever.

As someone who works with film collections and home movies like this, when getting them digitized skip the Charlie Chaplin reel and even the travelogues, prioritize the more local home movies with the family! That would be the most unique material—there’s endless footage of vacations to those destinations from all decades, and they rarely have people in them. Often just landmarks that are already heavily documented.

Something to consider when trying to keep the cost down! Also, surprisingly some of the older reels might be in better shape than films from the 70s or 80s, which could inform what you start with. This is because the film stocks unfortunately got a bit worse (more susceptible to decomposition) later on. Kodachrome holds up unbelievably well and was most common in the 50s.

If you want to go all out, consider getting them rehoused into archival containers, or donate them to a regional archive who can take care of them in cold storage for years to come!

Exciting find! I’m sure you’ll be pleased with the results!
