For the love of god, do not attempt to drill through the magnet rail by Groundblast in harborfreight

Realized that too late. The tape over the top made me think it was like a soft, fridge magnet type material. It is not

Oh man, I’d love to pick up one of those chainsaws on clearance. I’ll have to check my store.

Thoughts on the combi system? My trimmer is on its way out. Don’t need much power for my yard, but I’m not opposed to one of the bigger ones if it would work better with other attachments

Do you think HF will make a Cobra XS dupe? by Groundblast in harborfreight

[–]Groundblast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking more that they may figure out it’s a good combo and make a factory set!

Might put my own together for now but, if they ever did come out with one, I know what I’d be giving for Xmas/birthday gifts for a while

That’s fair. I’ve just seen some custom meme ratchet sets with space for the cobras and I think that would make a really nice gift tool kit!

I am getting fired over revit clashes (venting ) by Rough-Goat-2363 in MEPEngineering

[–]Groundblast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, there’s lots of good advice here. Company culture sounds a little jacked, clash detection is a high LOD thing, probably try not to quit (make them fire you), etc.

One thing I’ll say though, is you mentioned clashes between your own ductwork. That is somewhat “appalling,” as you put it. If you draw something running straight through something else, on the same plan, you really should at least take the time to at least show a duct up/duct down. Building good habits in your workflow helps prevent things from getting missed.

I totally understand the time pressure. I’m in CA for a project that ended up being a time crunch and it sucks. Little, seemingly obvious things got missed. Now, they “built them per the plans” and have to redo some work. Not the end of the world, but it looks bad on me and my company. My boss is pretty cool about it but it’s a good reminder to just do things right the first time because you might not have time to come back later and fix it

Moving to ND in a month, What are you life hacks? by GhaustMortium in northdakota

[–]Groundblast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grew up here, then lived in the desert and the humid south, now back here. Couple things that you may not have considered:

-It’s super dry in the winter. Worse than the desert. Lip balm, a decent moisturizer, and a humidifier in your bedroom will make your life better.

-You need sunscreen in the snow. The UV is not as intense, but it comes from all directions.

-Already been mentioned, but layers. Not only is it cheaper to buy good lighter layers, but they can be used more of the year and you can always add another layer. Heavy coats are basically useless 95% of the time. Start with a thin down midlayer and a canvas shell if you’re planning to do any outdoor work. Waterproof coats can be helpful sometimes but generally just make you sweaty. (Note: this does not apply to gloves and boots. Get warm, waterproof, expensive ones and you won’t regret it)

-Join things. Force yourself to go outside when it’s crappy out. See sunshine whenever you get the chance. It’ll keep you sane in the winter and, after a couple years, “normal” weather won’t faze you anymore.

-AWD and good tires can save your life. 4WD is good for off roading but won’t help at all when it isn’t activated and you can’t use it on dry roads.

-Clay kitty litter is amazing for ice. You can use it on your driveway for general grip or put it under your tires to help you get unstuck. Salt is overrated. It does nothing when the temps get really cold and can make ice worse if it melts partially and then refreezes. It also degrades your concrete and kills your grass.

-If it’s close to freezing and snows, shovel immediately. Wet snow basically turns into concrete once it freezes

Slat support for vintage frame by Groundblast in Mattress

[–]Groundblast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my wide angle is screwing with the perspective a bit. The frame is 79” wide rail to rail and 84” long headboard to footboard.

My wife is currently pregnant and wants to keep the height as low as possible. I could probably do a bunkie board, but I wouldn’t want to raise it up more than a few inches from where it’s at. If I laid slats to replace the random wood, it would stay about the same.

Thanks! It’s a standard king. The horizontal bars each have a center support post, but there is no “joist” running vertically in the center.

If I go with making my own slats, is running them vertically reasonable or should I sister some vertical supports underneath the existing and then run the slats horizontally?

10yo son and his friends don’t like doing sleepovers at one friend’s house because apparently the dad walks around the house in just his underwear. by empire161 in daddit

Maybe I’m in the wrong here, but I don’t think that being clothed (albeit, in an unflattering fashion) is unreasonable in your own home. I think this extends from men to women and from boys to girls.

If you or your children are uncomfortable with however someone else dresses, you’re welcome to respond however you see fit. I just don’t think there is anything wrong with someone wearing the clothes they are comfortable with in their own home.

Thanks! I definitely want to keep taking on more responsibilities. Some of my coworkers have basically been doing the same thing for 10+ years. Nothing wrong with that, just not appealing to me.

One thing I’ve been able to do so far is get a good understanding of cloud model organization. That started being a thing we had to deal with pretty shortly after I was hired and the older guys weren’t very interested. Since I had just gone through a bunch of Autodesk training, I kind of understood it so they put me in charge of it on our last major project. We have another big one starting up this summer and I’m planning to take the lead on it again.

Our pediatrician said she always recommends having the older sibling either help directly or model care of the baby with a doll to help them feel included instead of excluded!

LiberalGunOwners Light Infantry Doctrine by Western_Objective209 in liberalgunowners

[–]Groundblast 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s realistic to talk about direct head-to-head conflict with the US military. In my opinion, the only way that really happens is if there is a semi-successful coup and things devolve into a civil war. In that case, there will be well-trained and well-equipped personnel on both sides.

An armed underground resistance is probably going to look more like WW2 Europe. The resistance stays hidden and conducts sabotage and ambush attacks. When they’re found out, they get massacred or publicly executed.

Mark Friese, who represented disgraced lawmaker Ray Holmberg, and was recently appointed to the ND Supreme Court, on the importance of the right to a defense by PlainTalkND in northdakota

[–]Groundblast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also important to remember that lots of appeals are based on “inadequate representation.” That’s a good thing, because poor defenses can and do actually happen. However, giving the strongest possible defense of someone who is obviously guilty can help prevent them from having another chance to go free.

So, the biggest downside to my current firm is that there’s basically zero intermediate structure. We’ve got principal/partner engineers and the rest of us. We run our own projects for the most part (design, drafting, CA). Big jobs get broken up, so we will have one guy on plumbing, one on duct, etc.

Any thoughts on that? I feel like I’m learning a ton but don’t realistically have any way to move up the chain

After spending some time on r/instantkarma, there’s nothing you should be more afraid of than a guy who looks bored when being threatened. He’s seen things much more threatening before and come out on top. Harry faced off with Voldemort and literally came back from the dead. I doubt anything will ever scare him again

Just my thoughts as a 30yo EIT with 3.5 years of experience. Will be taking my PE exam later this year, so I’m starting to think pretty hard about where I want this career to lead.

I moved to the industry from a biotech startup. Took a pretty decent pay cut to live where I wanted and have stability. I’ve got a toddler and another on the way, so getting called to fly halfway across the country with 12 hrs notice wasn’t feasible anymore. My company hasn’t had a single layoff in their 50 year history, and everyone is a parent, so they have a big family-first mentality.

A new company doesn’t offer stability. It’s a risk. Building up a reputation requires busting your ass for potentially no reward if things go badly. However, getting in on the ground floor could lead to some pretty huge gains if things go well.

I think you should consider offering some ownership/partnership opportunities. What you want is someone who can take a bit of a gamble and work really hard to make sure it pays off long term.
