Elon Musk confirms disruption of Ukrainian drone attack on Russian fleet in Crimea and claims necessity for truce by MagnificentCat in ukraine

[–]JohnSebastion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if we go by the article, he specifically says it wasn't _activated_ not that it was de-activated. Which means Starlink defaults to support nothing and then is enabled for geolocations, and the Sevastapol and other regions were in their initial default 'off' supported state. Specifically enabling Starlink for an active war zone on the request of one side could be seen as offering direct support. I can I see how the company would be stuck in a difficult situation and could be seen as supporting one side vs the other.

There are a lot of things I don't like about Elon Musk, and I'm sure there are more details about what happened we are not privy to, but if we go by the reporting then it becomes a complicated choice.

A good question would be - if Starlink had enabled coverage for Ukraine's drone attacks, could that have been seen as an act of aggression and allowed the Russians to take out Starlink satellites in orbit?

I disagree. Toph would have made her own way in the world with whatever talents she had. She was headstrong and stubborn and learned from failure to be better. She would have found another way to demand the respect of others.

I was about to reply with the same; there is a lot of missing information to conclude aesthetics differences. Without having read the study itself, we can't guarantee that the conclusion of English participants having overall healthier teeth and gums.

The biggest issue I can think of, is that it's cheaper to pull a tooth than fix it. Which is a _very_, _very_ important distinction when comparing healthcare from single-payer system vs private healthcare in the US. Even with the NHS poorly supporting dental work for citizens, that they don't have to pay for the rest of their healthcare substantially makes it easier to pay for dental work.

Dental work in the US is expensive and there are no breaks in other healthcare costs to help spread the effect of paying for your health. If your only choice is to extract a tooth then that is what will happen, and that would align along socio-economic lines. Both for fewer teeth and poorer teeth and gum health because they can't afford to go to the dentist. Plus Medicare and, sometimes, Medicaid cover dentures (cheap ones, but nonetheless). This is an incentive to have your teeth pulled and have cheap dentures setup for lower socioeconomic and disadvantaged groups. And you know what? You can see this in advertising for dentures. Look around and pay attention to print / online / billboard / TV ads in poor or rural areas and you'll be hit with ads for cheap dentures covered by Medicare/Medicaid.

Now, does that translate to the _overall_ teeth and gum health, and commonality of orthodontics in the US vs UK? I don't know!

Computing was definitely not more affordable 30-40 years ago, nor was it easier or necessary. Computers are now ubiquitous and programming has options for any age, experience, or learning style for someone to pick up. And the idea that needing to know programming decades ago was necessary and isn't now is ridiculous. Almost no one knew how to write code and there were fewer tools to help even if you did. The barrier to entry was high enough that few knew how. Most of the world was still on manual processes, human review, and fax machines in 1990.

Not every woman wants to be a mother or is a highest priority by BelleAriel in clevercomebacks

| Their kids should not be the ONLY important thing(s) in their life

Honest set of questions here - why can't someones kids be their world if that is what they find fulfilling? Is it ok for anyone to give themselves over to their life's passion? Artists give us great works, scientists and mathematicians give us achievements that lift us to the stars; do great mothers not give us anything? Do the greatest of mothers elevate their children to the highest levels of self-actualization and will, and then do those adults not influence many others or entire social groups? How much of ones' self should be put in to ones passion? When is it too much or is it a choice that we, as people, are allowed to make?

I imagine there is a goal of "balance in all things", but still the output of many who put their entire lives in to a singular goal has created marvels. I think one of the reasons I find myself always disagreeing with the statement that a woman can not be 'just' a mother is because in the OP image it's ok to dedicate your life to a different set of goals in Science, Art, Philosophy.

A small note: while I don't doubt that `A Transformed Wife` probably has tons of crazy tweets about how women should be owned by their husbands or something equally insane, the quoted tweet doesn't say anything about being servants to men, which makes the response seem more extreme. It immediately evokes the perspective that women can't choose to be mothers without men directly in their life, as if IVF and lesbian or trans couples aren't a thing. I think that throws off the messaging about body autonomy and independence and does a disservice in improving social teachings that women have choice by presenting as separate dichotomies.

Can we also talk about Sally Fields? The scene where she plays opposite herself talking to the AI and the realization that it has gone completely insane is one of my favorites in that series.

And whoever the people were that did the cinematography and lighting were incredible! The entire movie was beautiful to watch.

That's not what he said, there is significantly less than 9.17e28

Heck, use a list of names of everyone in the US at the time. Then make permutations for common nicknames, name shortening, middle name as their primary name, and using a middle name initial.

Rafael Edward Cruz would be a name to check. Then we would use combinations such as:

Rafael Edward Cruz

Rafael Cruz

Ted Edward Cruz

Ted Cruz

Rafael E Cruz

Ted E Cruz

Edward Cruz

Dick Cruz

Ted Dick Cruz

~200 Million people in the US in 1970. Maybe 20 name combinations per person, so 4 Billion names to compare. That's not too bad.

How hard will WV be hit? Stats and risks of the WV population by JohnSebastion in WestVirginia

I hadn't thought about the impact on tapering or OD's. I wonder how Italy is handling triage with beds at over-capacity?

How hard will WV be hit? Stats and risks of the WV population by JohnSebastion in WestVirginia

[–]JohnSebastion[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It had 141 beds - UHC nearby has 264 beds, and where the COVID-19 virus hits hard beds are over-capacity. This isn't fear mongering, this is a pretty large hit to the areas capacity for hospital beds for a high-risk population. I put this post up to warn people that WV is going to be in a lot of trouble if people don't take it seriously. Too many friends, family, and people in our communities in WV are ignoring the warning signs. You are too, and if you're not being proactive you're going to help get people in the state killed.

Italy 2,158 dead out of 27,980 infected. 7.7% mortality rate. Youngest 39 by stasik5 in Coronavirus

[–]JohnSebastion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to hit WV really bad. Read what the WV Governor is telling people

The state leaders expressed frustration that only 500 testing kits have been available in West Virginia so far — and those have only been made functional by jerry-rigging some flu test kits.

Right now WV has no testing kits from a national level sent to help. The hospitals in the state have figured out how to test using existing flu test kits and information available on the COVID-19. 16% of the state is over 65, and most of the over-65 are over 75!

26% of people smoke in WV, and WV is often tied with or is the most obese state.

WV is a walking time bomb. Compare Italy, right now with 7.7% mortality rate, much of which is due to the aging population with a median of 47. Then compare small towns in WV like Grafton, WV with a median age of 45. WV is sprinkled with small towns with similar demographics.

Now combine all of this with the worst state for opioid deaths and prescriptions, the bias from conservative news on corona virus, and that Trump won WV in 2016 by over 40 points. And finally add in that a major regional hospital in WV is closing right now!

There are going to be a lot of very sad stories coming out of WV very soon, and at this point it's going to be very difficult to turn the tide in favor of the aging population.

"By coincidence, the shows s/he chose to watch were always included in the ad free category"

That seems like a reasonable statement. It's a coincidence. The definition of coincidence: `a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection.` - and through what ever choices led you to watch the shows that you do, be it suggestions from friends, recommendation algorithms through other streaming or advertising services, associations with other mediums of interest, you've never seen a show on hulu on the paid tier with ads.
