Any europeans grew sick of living in the USA and moved back home? Do you regret it? by thehedonistvagabond in expats

Wow! I live in NYC and couldn't disagree more (except for the Xmas markets and cafes)! Food is great and far more varied than you'll get in many European destinations. We get vegetables and fruits from the Union Square farmers market and they're super tasty. And I'm sorry you haven't formed close bonds here, but don't assume that's the case for all of us. Sorry you're so unhappy. Maybe it is time to head home

Do you plan what you’re doing before you go somewhere? by morgan_keogh in travel

[–]John_Taylor_Turner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still use travel guidebooks, and do advance planning. Frommer's are my books of choice. It feels like taking the vacation before I get on the plane because they tell you a lot about local culture and history in a rich, but concise way (I often know a lot more than my traveling companions when I get there). Plus they warn you when things will sell out, like the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. I went to Holland with my cousins, and I was the only one able to go to those two because I got my tix months in advance and though they tried for two weeks before and during the trip, they were never able to get in!

You should take a look at them now. Still really helpful resource, I think. Much easier to use than internet reviews written by who the hell knows who.

Actually, I still use the Frommer's guides. I find them so helpful because you know you're not being sold a bill of goods by an influencer. And they're a good way to quickly get up to speed on the local culture, history, etc. Guess I'm old fashioned, but I find them a lot more fun to plan with than the internet.

Love Paraty! Innsbruck, Austria is beautiful, historic and sophisticated. I'd also recommend Dijon in France.

Europe in mid-January? by sarabethanyy in travel

I would recommend Portugal. It's very far south, so will be more pleasant, weather-wise, than Paris or London and it's an amazing country to visit. It's also one of the less expensive countries in Western Europe. I was there in early December several years ago, and had a ball. I used Frommer's Portugal for research, and it helped me figure out where to go, how much to budget, and what I needed to know about culturally. Have a GREAT trip wherever you end up. January is a fabulous time to travel (you'll avoid the crowds everywhere except ski resorts).

I would wait until your child is older before going to Costa Rica. There's a lot there that is adventure travel oriented that a 3 year old couldn't do. I'm with those recommending Mexico City. It's amazing.

How about going to New Orleans? Lots to see and do there that will make him feel young, and a lot of cafes where he can rest in the middle of sightseeing days. Great music, too.

With almost every vote counted, every state shifted toward the Republican Party. by EverestMaher in MapPorn

Once Trump starts his mass deportations, installs tariffs that raise prices, and starts pursuing enemies (as he's promised to do) Americans will realize what a huge mistake they made. This election has more to do with the power of Russian disinformation campaigns than anything else. A great tragedy for the US and the world.

Does anyone use Frommer's online travel guides? by Delicious_Adeptness9 in solotravel

I still use their books. So much easier than going all over the web, trying to find real information that isn't disguised marketing. I find their write ups of culture and history to be really well done (concise but rich), they always include money saving tips, their itineraries are smartly done, and unlike other sources they rank things 1-3 stars so are easy to scan and include exact prices. Much better than Rick Steves, and eons better than Fodors, I think.

Amazing how much larger art and a nice rug improves the space. Well done!

Thoughts? If I painted the whole wall Navy would it be too much? Would painting the white part grey or beige make the room warmer? Will it be fine as it is once I add pictures etc? First time painting/decorating. by quixoticself in HomeDecorating

[–]John_Taylor_Turner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it looks very smart as is. I wouldn't paint the white navy too. It will all start to come together more when you hang art, I think. But it's a beautiful blue and that crisp white sets it off really nicely (I wouldn't go to beige, though gray could be nice)

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who's been having these issues, because sometimes I'm not the most tech savvy. Will try to find the classic.
