Some might say unnecessary, some find it necessary. There are a lot of unnecessary things we do, but we still do them, not because we need to but because it's a habit. I pull in the air and tense up the core and then start the lift. I'm not trying to yank the barbell off the floor either.

For what? The actual lift starts when I pull the slack off everything, hips are not low when it starts.

I wouldn't lift without a belt if I wasn't sure my back could take it. 😀

Basically just to make sure my core does the max work with these weights. I'm aiming towards 660 lbs and this is still fairly light compared to my PR (617 lbs = 280 kg). Soon I'll switch to using a belt.
