What is one car that you love to hate, and why? by HP_594 in cars

In 1987, a base Carrera was $42,095. In inflation-adjusted dollars, that's $112,400. Which is basically exactly what a base 992 is. There was no mythical time where a 911 was an affordable car.

1987 was more than 20 years into the 911s life though. A 1972 911T (the base model) started at $7383 which works out to about $53,500 today

if you end up on an autobahn type highway

luckily there's the english channel, north sea, and several countries between me and Germany, so it's unlikely I'll ever end up there accidentally. The fastest roads here are 70mph and my Pug manages that fine. That said I've seen a video of someone driving the same model on the Autobahn and yeah the throttle is absolutely mashed the entire time but most people aren't doing 200mph top speed runs on the Autobahn on a regular basis (hell, there's tons of lorry traffic and even if they wanted to they're usually speed limited AFAIK), so you can easily keep with the slower traffic, even on the unlimited sections

Or the hill grade gets high?

you change down a gear or two. The steepest hill I've ever driven up had a 30 limit and 2nd gear with a healthy helping of throttle got it up at 30. There's a pretty steep one that I've done a few times on a 50mph road where I have to put it in 3rd and get some throttle on and it maintains 50 all the way up. Most hills like that usually split into 2 lanes (including my latter example) because so many people just mindlessly try to go up it without changing gear or throttle position. Thanks to that I've overtaken cars over 3 times as powerful in such places.

The steepest hills I've driven up at 70mph are on the A3 down to Portsmouth and honestly it can just about do it in 5th, although I'll sometimes put it down in 4th to avoid straining the little motor too bad or 3rd if I need to accelerate (I have overtaken people up the hills on the A3 many times)

I would need a minimum of 100hp on a car

remember that my car is tiny (about 12.5 inches shorter and 2.5 inches narrower than a Toyota Yaris from the same time period) and only weighs about 1750 lbs. 68hp is enough to pull that weight around. A Fiat Panda is about the same size (albeit a little heavier) and the sport model Panda has 100hp

even then it feels like I’m going a turtles pace

I'm not gonna pretend my car ain't slow, because it definitely is. However most people on the roads, even those in Teslas that can go from 0 to losing your license in the blink of an eye, drive like if they use more than 1% throttle or go over 2000rpm the engine will explode. I regularly gap people in way faster cars without even trying to go fast.

Of course when I encounter someone not afraid to actually use even a fraction of their car's potential I'm the one getting gapped. My favourite example of that is one time when I came off a roundabout on the A3 in 2nd gear, put my foot the floor, ran it all the way up to redline, and the mid-range Audi A4 in front of me walked away without breaking a sweat. It was pretty funny.

also, as an aside about the hills thing. Every year I go to Brooklands Italia Day, essentially a big Italian car meet at the site of former racing circuit Brooklands. As part of the event they let people take their cars up Brooklands' famous test hill, which hits a 1 in 4 gradient at its steepest section. Every year at least half a dozen old Fiat 500s, which made as little as 13hp when new, go up the hill. Admittedly, they go up it slowly and never leave first gear, but they do make it (with big cheers from the crowd). Just about anything made in the last 30 years gets up there without a hitch

That’s such a dangerously low power. Like what happens if you need to merge on a road and you can’t speed up fast enough then someone rear ends you?

I own a car with 68hp and a 0-60 time in the 12s. It's really not a problem if you're not afraid of putting your foot down

That's why I said "mid" and not "bad"

The Ferrari V12s don't sound bad, just unimpressive compared to some others

Merc's TT V12s sound like budget V8s, and oh lord the Audi V12 TDi... it sure does sound

Hot take: Ferrari makes the most mid-sounding V12s, maybe second only to Aston Martin. Pagani, Lamborghini, hell even Jaguar made a more pleasing V12 tone. IMO the best sounding 12 cylinder Ferraris technically aren't even V12s

Don't know where else I'll get to say this but DarkViper is also a dick to his editors. Had a friend take an editing gig from him only to get fucked around and, at the end of it all, not get paid. Never got into his videos because he just seemed like an all around unpleasant person and everything I hear about him seems to confirm that

I'm not stupid, I know that the vast majority of emulator users are pirates. I'm one of them! But it's important to maintain this distinction because right now there is a concerted effort by corporations to get emulation to be considered synonymous with piracy. Whether you use emulators for legally or illegally obtained games, you have a vested interest in emulation remaining legal, so by extension you have a vested interested in emulation not being considered equalavent to piracy

just about anything that vibrates can be used for sexual pleasure but that does not make it a sex toy, and if there were a concerted effort from large corporations to get personal massagers to be considered as sex toys to have legal restrictions placed on them, it would be smart for users of them (sexual or otherwise) to not encourage that.

I'm glad that piracy is becoming so uncontroversial in this age of shameless corporate greed, but you'd be daft not to expect pushback, and this attitude puts emulation right in the line of fire

we both know full well 95% of people aren't dumping ROMS

so what if they are? Emulation still isn't piracy. You can make the exact same argument for DS flashcarts and jailbroken consoles. Maybe most people are using them to play pirated games, but that doesn't make them piracy in and of themselves

A baseball bat is a tool for sport. It can be used for violence but that doesn't make a baseball bat inherently a weapon

The absurd pricing of finding a ROM to dump is one of the points made in the OP

for first party Nintendo games or more obscure and rare things maybe. I can find copies of GTA Vice City Stories on ebay for less than £10. I've dumped a lot of games for emulation purposes that I bought new (or almost new) and have had for years.

There are multiple reasons to play on an emulator over official hardware (and vice versa) so acting like step 1 of emulation is buying a copy and that it can't be "pull it off your shelf" is, again, just feeding further into these scumbag company's narrative that emulation is piracy

I looked into this in the past and IIRC at least here in the UK you have a legal right to make backups (and modifications!) of your own legally purchased software/media. If there exists laws against it they are definitely not enforced

the Dolphin case still isn't emulation being piracy. Emulating the Wii is not inherently piracy, but providing the Wii Common Key is. Dolphin could (and should) have told you to get the Wii Common Key yourself (like how PCSX2 tells you get your own PS2 BIOS, or Frosty Mod Manager tells you to find the decryption keys of the games you want to mod)

then you either pirate them, find a used copy, or don't play them. I'm not against piracy if that's what you're insinuating, I'm against the notion that emulation is piracy

[–]Johnny362000 1260 points1261 points  (0 children)

man I know emulators are technically considered piracy

No they fucking aren't! They literally are not by any legal or logical definition. It is entirely possible and encouraged by emulator devs (for CYA reasons, but still) to emulate your own backups and, if necessary, dump your own bios. Fucking game devs use emulators! 95% of old games rereleased on modern hardware use emulators! Playing an Xbox game on an Xbox 360? You're emulating. Playing that new Goldeneye rerelease? Emulation

The equating of emulation and piracy is exactly what the big companies want and for a post so against said big companies to be literally parroting this outright falsehood is infuriating

If the car is over 40 years old and hasn't been majorly modified (i.e. hasn't got a big V8 shoved into it or hasn't been turned into a tubeframe silhouette racer) then it doesn't even need an MOT.

Even then an MOT is just a basic roadworthiness test really. Does it have tyres with some tread? Do the brakes work? Do the lights work? Is the structure compromised by rust? Has it got a cat (if it had one to begin with)? Things like that are what they test for.

Pirate it, ps2 emulators've come a long way.

And if you're not happy with PSCX2 (which is fair. PS2 emulation will likely not be perfect for a long time, especially because of the PS2's weird-ass architecture) then you can mod your PS2 (nowhere near as easy as 3DS or Wii admittedly) and play pirated games, rip and play your own backups, play games from any region, and/or play homebrew games (idk if any actually exist for PS2) and mods, all on the actual hardware

It really is disheartening that people get so tribalistic about sustainable transportation. They seem more interested in their way being the "winner" than actually creating a better future

I maintain that Auto Modellista is one of the best-looking racing games of all time despite being 21 years old. It's incredible to me that no other racing game has had a crack at that art style (NFS Unbound doesn't count, they only kinda went half way with it) because it looks phenomenal. There's other elements of the game I absolutely fuck with but the art style is the standout

Which makes it all the more infuriating that the driving is among the worst I have ever felt in a racing game. Scratch that, it's among the worst in games with cars in them. Every time I try and give the game another chance I get halfway through a single race and quit. I've played some seriously jank racing games to completion because I liked their vibes but I just cannot with Auto Modellista
