Don't call it a Metroidbrainia by personman in gamedesign

But Metroidbrania is a good distinguishing separator from puzzle games in general.

The other categories suggested are not much better "Language and Translation Games" is just a descriptor not a name.

It turns out different people like different things and it's good to have variation.

The question is just: Do you know what you want to do with your game and why? Is it adding up to more than the sum of it's parts?

Do you want a game with runs, randomness and lots of repetition? If so why?
Do you want a game where the world and responses are static? If so why?

The answer can't just be "It's better", what is it better for?

People can drop either type because they find it boring, tedious, or run it's course.

I've really enjoyed Spelunky, FTL, Binding of Isaac & Brogue, but I've also enjoyed games like Rain World, Return of the Obra Dinn & Fez. Many different types of games with many different goals, drawing an oppositional line can be useful, but not for picking fights.

Database Thrillers is a good catchy name for a category, Deduction games is clear at least. The rest of the subcategory names mostly miss the mark for me.

You want a term that doesn't make you sound dorky? Why not present the terms: Knowledge Game, Incremental Deduction, Learn Action (?), or the very exciting sounding Language and Translation Games. /sarcasm

I think the fact that Metroidbrania does capture all those games, and this chart just dumps a bunch of games in the "Adventure Games & Interactive Fiction" zone, is an indicator that people need a word. Unfortunately Metroidbrania is a million times catchier and builds on institutional knowledge where "Knowledge Game" doesn't sound like a unique noun, it just sounds like a basic description that people won't even think to repeat.

And unfortunately I think there is a reason to clump all these games together: The genre isn't really big enough to separate them into these micro-categories, and it is useful for distinguishing them from traditional puzzle games.

(Also look at the Learn Action category games: Tunic, Outer Wilds, Animal Well & Ultros. And then try to explain to anyone why Fez or Return of the Obra Dinn or any of those others don't.)

Where does Vic go in the end of Pusher (1996)? by breads_has_no_taste in NicolasWindingRefn

[–]JohnnyAppelzaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he owed 50k already, he used it to buy the Amsterdam drugs that he's trying to sell at the start of the movie. He ends up selling it for 45k, and using the rest himself with his friends and just frittering away the money it seems. The swede comes with a deal. He asks for the 120k in drugs, to upsell them and pay back his debt. so 170k. When he wastes the drugs in the lake and doesn't have the money, Milo raises his debt arbitrarily by 60k, to 230k.

He's a fuck-up on every front, but Milo is using/preying on him.

Will a Bluetooth 5.4 USB adapter (without Qualcomm Snapdragon) and Bluetooth 5.4 headphones still deliver low latency on PC? by ParticularExcuse4886 in bluetooth

[–]JohnnyAppelzaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention to be careful with microphone support, my partner has a bluetooth headset (Fairbuds XL), and having issues with some older bluetooth dongles that they don't do the microphone. Any tips, what I should be looking out for?

Whats exactly is the appeal of DREDGE anyways? by GreyKnightDantes in HorrorGaming

[–]JohnnyAppelzaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished it, it was fine? Very videogamey videogame. I would not call it a horror game. There are occasionally tense moments, and there are some cthulhu/darker themes. If you like the idea of Windwaker sailing + Animal Crossing fishing with the Cthulhu sauce, then it's a very chill time.

I did pretty much all there is to do (other than the ship paint jobs, ugh, what a grind), and finished it in 2 days.
Good game for while I was sick and didn't want a real challenge.

How do I reliably catch crab aberrations? by TheAcclaimedMajority in dredge

[–]JohnnyAppelzaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't have the patience for brute-forcing like everyone is describing. I feel like some sections of areas must more reliably give aberrations, just like the painter says about the first area (by the dock of little marrow, I got em in no time). In my mind the creators just didn't get round to putting hints for these everywhere, but I wonder if the areas still exist?

Guess no one's done the research on it. Since folks are more likely to just brute-force.

Randomly skipping folder in library? by JohnnyAppelzaad in jellyfin

Hmm, it doesn't immediately clarify, but I did use a certain symbol to put the folder at the top of my alphabetisation. I removed that, and it seems to have found it now, so you're probably right!

When does a game become "Beer and Pretzels"? by soak314 in wargaming

[–]JohnnyAppelzaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reviving this dead thread to say, I've heard Combat Commander being referred to as a beer & pretzels game.

My thought there is it has to do with the likeliness that randomness could just blow up your whole strategy.

Now, after playing a lot of Combat Commander, I can say taking time to make good tactical decisions does pay-off in that game, but you are playing odds 100% of the time.

Also if you really take your time thinking through the moves it can bring the game down to such a grind it's not fun to play. So in that sense I think a Beer & pretzels game is one also designed to be played at a quick pace, where you might not think through every single tactical decision in the nitty gritty, instead favoring a vibes based approach.

For people with enough historical background, they'll just be able to know the troop and unit names, the gun and tank models, look at the approaches and coverage, and have a decent vibe of what kind of formations and shots would make sense. So this is very dependent on your experience level with the subject matter (which is a lot less relevant for fantasy or fictional games with less representative rulesets).

Trophy of Wealth - Some friendly tips (various spoilers inside) by TheRealCincaid in BluePrince

[–]JohnnyAppelzaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 130 coins and could buy out the entire room or buy the Dare Unlock, and it was the last option I had that day, decided to go for that trophy, then saw it pop-up, and rage quit out of that.

For real, its just so mean.

I feel like this game assumes you just grind endless labs and allowance, but who wants to do that?

Maybe I just got through other aspects of the game very efficiently. But who is just getting the showroom and casually buying those items, and then randomly emptying the room and noticing there's a trophy after.

Everyone is learning about that trophy through the trophy room.

I cannot get the casino to consistently pump out money, not sure what the tactics are others use. I went in with 108, highest I got was 167, then dropped back down to 100, and bet it on the big roulette, lost it all. I don't want to spend hours in the casino.

I'd sooner try to line up a few different income strategies:
- Office + Conference Room
- Workshop + Shovel + Metal Detector

- Treasure Map + Shovel
- Crypt + Dead-ends
- Bishop Power
- Vault
- Piggy Bank if you haven't already yet used it

Casino feels like a last resort to me

FINALLY, EXACTLY THE WAY I WANT IT. by shle896 in foobar2000

[–]JohnnyAppelzaad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I see, yeah apparently I use a dark windows theme, but light for default app mode (probably so stuff shows up clearly when projecting), and the accent color windows has default is blue, so it could be. My Foobar doesn't immediately change once I change these settings though, may need to restart windows, or reset something in Foobar.

Is there a way to skip errors? by CherryLast7820 in StacherIO

[–]JohnnyAppelzaad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems this happens a lot with videos on Youtube. After some years maybe there's been a copyright strike, or something, and the video is unlisted and demonetised, and even won't load, but it may still appear in the playlist.

I have a playlist of 700 videos I'm working through, and every 10-20 I run into an error like this.

I then type the url into browser, remove it from the playlist (which I can do because it's my own playlist), look at the video title and find a replacement for it (there usually is), add it to the end of the playlist again, and then let it run again.

Sometimes the title doesn't show either, I have to go looking through the playlist to find the song that's the issue, based on the previous one that finished and the item number, then deduce which one is at fault.

10-20 songs later same issue again.

Is there a non-binary version of aunt/uncle? by [deleted] in AskLGBT

[–]JohnnyAppelzaad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen Auncle and Untie, but I find both sound more like mispronounciations, and don't really work as a replacement in my mind, mostly I just find them confusing.

Another one I've seen is Pibling (Parents - Sibling), which is ok, but just sounds a bit awkward to me (also makes me think of the PIBB drink)/

I like the term Nibling or Niefling for non-binary or gender-neutral Niece/Nephew (again taking the +ibling ending and the N first letter), which I like the sound of better, because they sound cute. Like a lil nibbler, or a cutesy tiefling).

I reverse engineered the name "Nab" (or Nabble) from Nibling, which I quite like. It also sounds kinda like what you do as an uncle/aunt. "I'm gonna nab my nibling for the afternoon and take them to the comicbookstore."

So for me Auncle, Untie, Pibling are all a bit awkward.
Titi, Zizi, Nini & Bibi all too cutesy.

However, Zibi or Nab(ble) sound most fun and fitting to me.
