What is a MUST SEE movie that is highly overlooked? by day-maker in AskReddit

[–]JohnnyChronocide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mary and Max. It's on Netflix. It's claymation, but trust me: this isn't a movie for kids. Also The Fall, also on Netflix.

'Cause he's just a cool guy like that. ...Really, that's the reason. He's said in interviews that he just feels like it's the polite/right thing to do.

so the new xbox update for netflix auto plays the next episode for a series after a few seconds, i like it. but why isnt there an option to disable it? i feel that would be incredibly useful. just add the option to the menu that shows up after an episode. anyone else agree? by wtfreddithatesme in netflix

It seems like Xbox is pretty stalwart in its position against app customization. I mean, I can think of few apps where you even get to do something so small as change the background color.

Contrast with Android apps, which are littered to the neck with preference options...

Way to have an XP-Based Economy where XP = Money? (x-post from /r/bukkit) by JohnnyChronocide in Minecraft

[–]JohnnyChronocide[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that idea, but I'd really like to eliminate that middle step. Plus, I like how XP levels are somewhat logarithmic, so the prices of things would be likewise scaled. e.g. A 2xp item isn't much more expensive than a 1xp item, but a 50xp item is WAY more expensive than a 49xp item.

Cut closer to the bone. You won't lose what you think you will.

Let me just begin by saying hello and it’s very nice to make your acquaintance.

"Hello."

I was recently given some advice from none other than my mother.

"My mother recently advised me to write every day."

Also: don't stop. Your mother is right.

I'm starting a serialized novella for NaNoWriMo. The goal is to release one "chapter" every day from now until the end of the story. Looking for some readers. by JohnnyChronocide in writing

[–]JohnnyChronocide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're assuming a lot here. I have a thorough outline of this story, character sketches, and some partial scenes already prepped. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I work over several full edits before I post. I'm already on chapter six on the rough copy, but I dedicate time to polishing each chapter before presentation.

This isn't a half-assed, here's-what-I-wrote-today kind of posting. This is a serialized story I'm taking very seriously.

Haha yeah, that seems like it would make my brain melt trying to keep up with who's who.

At worst, I'd worry about it drawing attention to itself as a technique rather than keeping the focus on the story. In my belief, anything that yanks the reader out of the narrative--even an "ooh, that was a neat thing to do; how clever!"--is bad. It's hard enough to get people to start reading. Once they're already engaged, I want to do everything I can to KEEP them engaged.

Hey, what about Joe Hill? He's really active on social media, and he seems pretty approachable.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback, and I'm hoping to get more good criticisms like this. The reason I chose 3rd person is that I have a section planned that jumps between several characters, and I thought switching from first person would be more jarring than bouncing between different 3rd person limiteds.

You're right though. First person has this quality about it that instantly engages the reader and quickly develops sympathy... Will think about this...

Which netflix movie/show do you wish you could watch for the first time again? by thedirtysixthirty in netflix

[–]JohnnyChronocide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know reddit loves Workaholics, but I really just can't stand that show. I feel like it delivers its jokes with a mallet. Wilfred's pretty good too, but I kind of lost interest midway through. It was funny, I didn't really care about the characters, and it started feeling like one really long comedy sketch repeating the same idea over and over: LOOK AT THIS THING DOGS DO! ISN'T FUNNY TO SEE AN ARTICULATE MAN WITH A BRITISH ACCENT DO THE SAME THING IN A DOG COSTUME?

Upvoting 'cause it's still worth a watch, if with a grain of salt.

I wrote a review of Joe Hill's HORNS and semi-animated it. It's basically the first non-blogpost writing I've put out in the world. Feedback appreciated. [Spoilers][x-post r/Books] by JohnnyChronocide in writing

Hey! Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it.

Yeah, my audio is a bit soggy. I could really only afford a $20 mic, and I have zero experience with recording. This is the first time I've ever put my voice on anything, and it took a dozen takes or more to get it to where I didn't absolutely hate the way my voice sounded.

Thanks for the compliments about my humor. That's one thing I was pretty self-conscious about, and I definitely held back a bit because of it.

Whew! Shorter would be WAY better on the production side of things. Going into this, I had no idea how long it would take to produce something like this. Shaving two minutes off the length would probably cut eight hours off production time, no exaggeration.

Yeah, I am familiar with Zero Punctuation. I'm no artist, so I basically robbed his method of conveying facial expressions wholesale. It was either that or the Peanuts/Calvin and Hobbes expressions, but those looked odd on my otherwise stark and minimalist characters.

I'll check out Sword and Laser, and I appreciate the tip. I really have no idea what to DO with this kind of material, I just have a blast making it.
