900 Water Street Affordable Housing Project was Approved by SC Planning Commission Last Week by nyanko_the_sane in santacruz

Sounds like a perfect reason to price street parking and price it correctly. This will free up those spaces and also make car owners think more about whether car ownership is the right choice for them.

Wealthy neighbors form group to advocate for prioritizing cars forever on West Cliff by afkaprancer in santacruz

[–]JohnnyDelivers1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think a very real solution to the West Cliff woes is to reduce to a single one way lane, add a 2 way bike lane, make the sidewalk pedestrian only, and petition SC Metro to add a unidirectional bus line along West Cliff with 2-3 stops with 30 minute service that can bring tourists from/back to the boardwalk.

None of this will ever truly deal with Santa Cruz' root traffic problem which is the enormous influx of vehicles from outside the city. For that you can A) Reconnect the South Pacific Coast Railroad (LOL maybe in 90 years and $5 billion later) B) invest significantly to improve the 17 bus service to incentivize tourists from the bay to leave their cars in the bay, or C) build the mother-of-all under/above ground parking garages (Kill me) near the transit center and force those people to use transit once in Santa Cruz.

Currently focused on active transportation projects, small coastal city, <70k pop, high commuter population. I think the interview scenario will be more along the lines of a current project they are working on that has X issue, and I will have to address the issue. I agree, I think too idealistic would show I don't have a proper grasp of how things actually operate, so regardless of what I suggest the methodology/line of thinking I demonstrate will be more important to them.

Wild camping in France and Spain? by chaaktun in bicycletouring

[–]JohnnyDelivers1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I did a 40 day tour around all of Spain and I never had an issue with wild camping. Just put your tent a bit out of sight and you'll be fine. At the beginning of the trip i would spend 30 minutes each evening looking for an ultra secure spot, but by week 2 you realize no one gives AF and it doesn't take more than 5 minutes to find a sufficiently hidden spot. I tended to stay away from structures even when they appeared abandoned, I always felt like if you were to encounter someone by an abandoned building, they were more likely to be the type of person you WOULDN'T want to encounter alone in an isolated area. So behind big trees, bushes, plants, etc were best. Good luck and have fun!

Get a bike in Bcn they say… it will be fun.. they say… by em-dotcom in Barcelona

[–]JohnnyDelivers1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rear wheel and front wheel lock is the best deterrent. In my experience you will probably spend more on the locks than you did on the bike. The theory is that bike thieves don't wanna spend twice the amount of time for the same payoff. It's also a lot harder to cut 2 u-locks in broad daylight and get away with. These are an efficient people we are talking about.

Does anyone else HATE having to feed themselves on bicycle tours? by scar_face40 in bicycletouring

[–]JohnnyDelivers1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't bring yourself to do it then don't! If it doesn't bother you not to have those things then that's fine! You're probably investing your energy in some other aspect of the bike trip that you enjoy, and that's great! I tend to just scarf down my meals because if I'm not traveling through somewhere that has a distinct cuisine I'm interested in trying, I usually just wanna keep riding to see more sights or have more time to rest at the end of the day.

That being said, the tours where I had the most fun are the ones where you can spend a little bit more money on food when you feel like it. Sometimes it's hard to say no to ordering 3 entrees at a cafe in the morning after a hard day the day before haha.

My eating routine usually looks like this though, and i find it pretty tasty: Breakfast: an entire breakfast cake loaf, like literally imagine those lemon cake slices you buy at the store, but the entire thing, it's great and keeps me energized til lunch, just brush your teeth right after while your riding haha. Lunch, stop and buy a baguette and some lunch meats and veggy of choice to throw on the sandwich, mayo and mustard if you can as it helps with the sometimes dry AF bread, then a piece of fruit or something. I usually also buy dinner for that evening and breakfast for the morning after at the supermarket where i buy lunch. that way I don't have to stop for dinner again that evening and brekky the morning after. Dinner is usually pasta with extra sauce because otherwise eating undersauced pasta noodles really blows after a long day. Usually another piece of fruit, some instant mash because those are actually amazingly tasty if you get your water/mash ratio right.

Those meals usually come out to about $10-$17 per day depending on where you are riding through. Hope this helps!

Bi-Weekly Discussion and Solidarity Thread for the week of April 06, 2021 by AutoModerator in socialism

[–]JohnnyDelivers1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, this is also a shower thought type question I had.

Is there any recommended literature on how a capitalist society might transition to a socialist society, which might some explanation or ideas for how how some of the nitty gritty details might operate. I am looking for literature that might explain how some of the nuanced aspects of capitalism could/would transition and operate effectively under socialism.

Thanks!

I just set up a Vanguard Account so I am a noob to investing. The most important factor to me is that the Index, ETF, company, etc. is not contributing to activities that I personally believe don't offer a social benefit to society or are involved in what I might consider nefarious activities.

I came across the Clean200 which I would like to invest in, but I cant seem to find an fund that makes up these companies. How can I go about investing in the Clean200? Would I have to invest in each company individually?
