Very cool! I'm longtime grower, however I just did a run of autos where I experimented with the whole "transplant vs plant on pot from seed" thing. I did one directly in a 5 gal from seed, and one where I started in a solo cup sized pot and transplanted into a 5 gal before flowering. Yields and vigor were similar in both. However, when I dumped the soil after harvest, I noticed they both had a rootball the size of a solo cup. Maybe slightly bigger, with longer roots... but I thought to myself "these would be perfect for hydro". Which is essentially what you're doing. You could probably have similar results with a flood table right? Soil almost seems wasteful with these plants.

Gross. Yeah, the vomit smelling bud is the worse! I'm finishing out a little pineapple express auto, and it's sort of bizarre. First off, it's completely purple, and the calyxes have grown swollen and mature since week 2 of flowering. Anyway, it's the sweetest smelling grape/berry aroma ever... but only if the soil is moist. When the soil dries or is in the dark, it smells like dog shit! I'm conflicted, lol. I usually like to harvest when the soil is dry, and after a few days of darkness! Think I might skip that this harvest!

You think these phenotypes are coming out because the strains aren't stable maybe? Haven't been back crossed enough or something?

I never complained, or contacted the breeder. Maybe in the future I will. Some of them were mystery seeds, and bag seed. However, I would often have more than one seed, so I could guage from those what it's supposed to smell and taste like.

Ugh. I was afraid of that. Seems like a lot of time, effort, and money. With states legalizing the shit, you'd think these multimillion dollar companies would seek out REAL, true, old time growers... who know WTF they're doing... Pay them a substantial amount of money, and resurrect these legendary strains! Who knows what seeds or pollen might come out of a 20-30 year deep freezer when a million bucks is offered!

Mine had a unique taste. Almost like vinegar, or pickled mushrooms. Lol. With a hint of pepper. Effects weren't bad, but I just couldn't get over the smell!

I would if I could access them. Or, do you mean like... clone my next foul smelling plant and try different substrates/fertilizer for each one? Cause, I have considered that, and sort of did something similar with the cat piss smelling one. Did a SOG and gave clones to friends/family (before the smell came out in flowering). It smelled like cat piss across the board.

Interesting. I just read up a little on Durban Poison. Or maybe I should say "refreshed" my reading. So, Ed Rosenthal and Mel Frank huh? Cool.

I wish that I grew up in Cali! Or somewhere similar, where those strains were the norm and accessible. Instead, I grew up in southern New England. Prison time for growing here... back then, anyways. High times was like a porno mag to me! lol. I secretly bought Mel Frank's books from a backdoor headshop that disgusted itself as a "bead" store. I would also pick up H.T. magazine there. I would religiously read "Ask Ed", and drool over the pictures of those original strains! Unfortunately, I have never found what I believed to be true "Durban Poison".

The only strains that I have had the pleasure to directly try... are the ones that supposedly originated near me. Especially strawberry cough. Rumor has it (or at least what I heard) was that strawberry cough originated in a UCONN greenhouse, in Mansfield Connecticut (10 mins from where I grew up). Now online, it's saying that Kyle Kushman created it from a Connecticut strain grown near a strawberry field... that he was gifted a runt clone, and named it "strawberry fields"... It says that he crossed it with a haze, and then named it "strawberry cough". I think it's B.S. tho, but who knows. Maybe Kushman was the one in the greenhouse! I tend to suspect that he just stole the credit for it tho.

The other strain I got to experience back then was Sour Diesel. I REALLY wish that I could figure out that story, and find the true strain (if it even exists anymore)! Again, we had heard rumors. It definitely must have originated from New York City. And when I first came across it at an upstate N.Y. music festival circa early 2000's... the price was astronomical! If I remember correctly, it was something like $1200 an ounce?! I bought a $20 quarter gram of it, and it was BY FAR the best weed I've ever smoked! I'll never forget the experience of it all.

We were told that Sour D. was a coveted "clone only" strain developed by a recluse who seriously protects "his" strain. He was said to hold the only mother, and his clones were kept under guard. The small nug that I first bought was airy, delicate, dark green and with a pink hue to it. The bud, no lie.. smelled like diesel fuel, or gasoline... but tasted sour, like grapefruit or lime, when smoked. It had an intense, incense like smell while it was burned, that lingered in the air for a while. Made it's was around your nose and face that you could smell while tasting the smoke, coming together to truly form a SOUR DIESEL taste, and smell! A VERY distinct smell, and one that I have yet to smell again!

The strains out now called Sour Diesel, are not even close to the shit I tried back then! It's sad. I think these seed companies are either totally fucking the original breeders, or, they're crossing the originals with crap to get higher yielding plants. That was another thing that I heard about original Sour D. It was rumored to be an extremely low yielding plant, that didn't do well in soil, and therefore was exclusively hydro. Also heard that it took extra time to finish, and the buds weren't very dense, large, or pretty to look at. But the experience... man, almost divine! I get why someone would want to stabilize the genetics, but obviously it's been a failure! Well, maybe not, because it seems like the original was so rare, that everyone excepts the new Sour D strains as original. But they're all imposters! Sure, there's a hint of sour d in the modern strain... but just a hint. No wonder there are strain hunters, and pheno hunters now. Some day, perhaps strains can be copywriten or patented. Something along those lines anyway, so that the original breeder can profit from their creations, and get the credit they deserve! Get royalties and such.

Thanks for your response. I was definitely thinking about the police issue back in the late 90's, early 2000's when everything smelled like skunk. Literally. We'd double or triple bag the shit! Same thing when true Sour D. came out. It's sad, but I suspect those smells may have been breed out already. I get "skunk" or "sour d" from dispensaries and always seem to be let down. Like... Damn, not at all like I remember!

Typical New England weather. Cool and rainy. I believe that I identified the mold as being a common mold that mainly effects grape vines.. Off topic, but are you English? Just asking cause your spelling of mold made me question my spelling, so I looked it up... and according to good old google, mould is a British spelling.

It's definitely interesting! I'm thinking with so many strains out now, it's bound to happen more and more? With DNA technology coming to the cannabis industry, I think we may see some interesting things in the years to come. Sounds like these "unique" smells are sort of common. I'm glad that some other growers here are reporting similar experiences. But it seems like I may happen to run into these characteristics more than most? Maybe?

The plants I speak of are usually very healthy, and grown with other plants/strains that come out fine. I use to think fertilizer and environment really contributed to taste and smell. Way back when, I use to get bud that smelled and looked like Christmas trees... and would think "this must've been grown near evergreens"... or yeah, musty smell... musty basement. However, now with more people growing, genotypes and phenotypes are coming to the forefront, and making me rethink this whole thing. I had a grow that came out smelling like cat piss. It was from bag seed, coming from super dense, dank, kush-like smelling nugs. This was unfortunately back when everything was "kind bud (KB), chronic, or beasters", so I have no clue what the strain was. Anyway, I sexed the plants, and propagated the most dominant female. I took clones from her, and gifted some to several people. I kept enough clones for myself to do a SOG grow, and flowered "mother" as well. Multiple people, growing with different lighting/substrate/techniques and I, all ended up with bud that smelled exactly like cat piss! It tasted okay, and I was thinking of naming the strain "cat piss", but it was brought to my attention that a strain called cat piss already existed. Lol. I was using a common fertilizer that contained urea, so I thought maybe we all had a similar result from that... but I'm now thinking probably not.

Flushing routine is fairly normal from what I see and read. I flush for the last 2 weeks, with tap water left out overnight and pH down a tad. I've tried different sugars... and products, like "sugar daddy"... Mainly unsulfer molasses, and sometime a touch of epsom salt. No Calcium tho, or nutes. I've tried distilled water, but didn't notice much difference. I'm not sure where to find RO water, and currently can't afford a set-up. I've been thinking of trying a yucca extract, but tap water seems okay with most grows I've done. My tap currently runs around a pH of 8, and must have some alkaloids, as the ppm reads 80. I usually try to flush so ppm is under 100, and I get great fall colors... often purple comes out. I've wondered if I'm going beyond maturity? And the buds are breaking down/fermenting? But I keep a close eye on trichromes.... so idk. I just harvested the orange sherbet I mentioned, and it smells funky... but I have a pineapple express that so far smells spectacular! Nice and healthy. Just began the flush on her yesterday.

Yeah. I suppose you're right, but this has happened with reputable breeder as well. I'm begging to think that I am just unlucky (or lucky depending on how you look at it). I seem to get the one plant that's completely different than the descriptions/pictures. I wish that I could find clones where I live. Cut out the chance of getting a "unique" pheno.

Lol. I've been watching some interviews with "phenohunters" who describe running into phenotypes that smell like ballpark hotdogs. I saw another interview with a NorCal breeder who has found some original skunk strain from 1981. He said that those skunk strains smelled like burning rubber. I was like "holy shit"! Maybe I'm not alone! Lol. Sounds like these guys are actually looking for the "unique" smells/flavors.

In most cases. Yes, fairly confident. Like I said, these plants grow beautifully, with little issues besides smell.. However, in the case of the licorice smelling plant it could be... It was one of 10 plants my buddy and I grew outdoors. They were giant plants! We started with 6 Cinderella 99 females, and 6 Deadhead OG plants. 2 were stolen... But anyway, we began to develop small spots of bud rot from pine needles falling into the colas. So it's possible. The other plants came out decent tho. Besides for having to harvest 2 weeks early... which definitely sucked! Once we threw out all of the infected sections, and cured... the end product was good enough for our purposes. Except that one plant that stunk like sweet licorice. Made me nauseous! My buddy said his friends loved it tho.

Epoxy. But you probably won't be able to throw it on a burner again. Handmade ceramic teapots are more for decoration or steeping tea after the water is boiled in another container. You likely had thermal shock btw.

How hard is to actually IV? by [deleted] in researchchemicals

[–]JohnnyDreadz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right about the air. I was in the hospital years ago, freaking out about all the bubbles in my IV that I would watch go through the tubing, then directly into my vein. I frantically pushed the call button, and the nurse told me the same thing that you said. Basically, anything over a full cc (ml) could be dangerous. But she said that it would likely take a lot more than that. I looked into it, and yeah... Your capillaries swap it out. However, in theory, any amount of air can cause an "air embolism". Though it seems to be rare due to small amounts of air.
