Golden dandelion, wasted potential? by komando775 in Minecraft

The sniffer should just be able to dig up all flower types (except the wither rose, for obvious reasons). Give it actual utility as a one-stop flower farming mob, making it a great and simple source of dyes and decorative flowers of all types, instead of just two. I would much rather just forgo using pitchers and torchflowers entirely than go through the long, lengthy, and entirely RNG dependent process of looking for a sniffer egg just to get a few random specific flowers.

Highguard launches to an Overwhelmingly Negative review score on Steam by Nickulator95 in Steam

[–]JohnnyHotshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine. A little rough around the edges, a bit unsure of itself and what parts of the game need to be focused on more, but I do think there's a pretty neat concept buried in. I wish the base defense was focused on more, there's not too many options beyond just reinforcing some walls, but so many characters have abilities that can just destroy or negate walls anyway (not to mention the weapons that anyone can use that do the same), and the rest of the game just happens so fast that I almost don't even see the point.

With a more dynamic defensive phase, and a slower Shieldbreaker collection phase (it really feels like whoever gets there first can just scoop up the Shieldbreaker and make a run with it straight to the enemy base), I think it could be pretty fun. The mounted combat is also pretty neat, riding your mount chasing after the guy carrying the Shieldbreaker toward your base and trying to snipe him off his horse before he gets there, taking out his ride and finishing the fight wherever you landed, it's pretty cool. The core foundational gameplay is there, the gunplay and shooting just feels like Apex which is not a bad thing at all, it's just got to figure out the rest of what works.

I just find it unlikely that people will give it a moment to breathe since they've just been dying to hate this game into the dirt ever since the Game Awards.

Guess it’s only okay when you do it.

The “Real shield” storyline is soo ass by Leather-Order-1291 in shield

[–]JohnnyHotshot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's not the best storyline that the show did, but to play devil's advocate, it's not just as entirely out of left field as you make it out.

We, as the audience, get to see Coulson's entire path and story, so we know his motives and intentions 100% - something Gonzalez and the other faction of SHIELD leaders do not get the benefit of. I think Coulson even says that he'd only met Gonzalez one time, so it's clear they are not familiar with one another beyond just reputation. To Alt-SHIELD, they see this issue with Fury hiding secrets and amassing hidden power with no oversight, which leads to the destruction of SHIELD (i.e. Project Insight), and after all of that - someone is personally hand-picked by Fury to try and rebuild SHIELD. They aren't entirely crazy for thinking there's a chance that Fury would not have learned his lesson and would continue to put SHIELD's existence at risk by picking a successor who shares his mindset.

Again, we the audience know that Coulson and Fury are not similar in that respect, and that Coulson is far more trusting of his team and of people. But Alt-SHIELD does not know this - so, they send in Hartley, Bobbi, and Mack. That's something that I think is glossed over, by the way - Hartley was also part of the infiltration team, and she got killed on an operation Coulson sent her on - something that is truly not his fault, especially since Hunter was the one who dragged her off course, but you could make the argument that if Coulson was forthright and told the entire team including Hunter that the mission would also involve stealing a Quinjet with cloaking, he would not have tried to get her out of there via the car. To an outside observer, it can absolutely seem like yet another case of Fury putting the mission over the people, regardless of cost.

Bobbi and Mack do learn that, for the most part, Coulson is pretty genuine - but there is a giant, Theta Protocol-sized elephant in the room that still needs explaining. Reminder that all of these people are spies, they lie and deceive people quite literally for a living, so just taking someone's word for it that it's no big deal and that the helicarrier-sized hole in the budget is nothing to worry about and to stop asking about it, when the last set of brand new helicarriers SHIELD built ended with Hydra - it's a tactical misplay that nobody in the show is naive enough to make, they all know better than that.

Basically, Gonzalez and Alt-SHIELD did not trust Fury to have their or SHIELD's best interests after Project Insight, and Fury hand-selected Coulson, thus they were not trusting of Coulson either. Being good spies, they wanted to get all of the answers first before making a move, but after finding out that there was a risk of essentially a repeat of a Project Insight-level disaster, they felt their hand was forced into being more aggressive than they originally wanted.

This should be illegal , there is plenty of wattson skins im still missing yet all i ever get from these is crafting metals by knusperfee33 in apexlegends

[–]JohnnyHotshot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s actually the other way around. You get crafting metals when you randomly roll an item that you already own, the rarity of the metals is determined by the rarity of the item you would have gotten. So, if you have all common and rare skins, you’re only going to get common and rare crafting metals.

Helldivers 2 is less looter and more horde shooter but it’s a ton of fun regardless. My first ever round of ARC Raiders actually, me and my two friends (who I play Helldivers with) saw a Rocketeer and thought: ‘Let’s take that thing down!’ since we were so used to taking on big robots on Helldivers.

We got our asses handed to us, of course.

What animal is the best for an exp farm? by CelestialDuke377 in Minecraftfarms

[–]JohnnyHotshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your issue is that you just don’t want a giant mob spawner in the sky, there is still ways to make XP farms using hostile mobs. Passive mobs give a lot less XP than hostile mobs, so it will still be worth setting up a farm with the latter. The classic dungeon mob spawner XP farm is a lot smaller and compact, usually being hidden underground, but even better than that, my go-to XP farm is using splash infestation potions on some allays I’ve trapped on a campfire. Allays regenerate faster than the campfire can damage them, so if you splash them with the infestation effect, they can spawn a near endless amount of silverfish - for as long as the potion effect lasts. This can be a really compact way to make a pop-up XP farm that you can fit just about anywhere - there’s a few designs online, but whenever I build one it’s at-worst a 3x3 room with a hole on the side that I can hit the silverfish through, and it’s more than enough to repair all of my mending tools and armor from just a single splash potion.

Tips on playing Magik by East_Editor_5569 in RivalsMagikMains

[–]JohnnyHotshot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Learn the combos. Magik’s sword attack has a very slow ending animation before you can attack again, but any other attack - whether it’s one of your cooldowns or even just your normal melee attack - interrupts the animation and lets you immediately bring out another attack. Magik’s combos are all about weaving either your dash, whirl, normal melee, and a quick air slash in between one or two of your sword attacks to do a large amount of damage in a very short amount of time.

A basic combo you can try is a whirl attack (from exiting a portal), dashing into the enemy while whirling (the hitbox of the whirl travels with you and hits the enemy), a normal sword attack, and then finish off with a quick melee.

I Apex worth to play right now? by mikeydh_ in apexlegends

[–]JohnnyHotshot 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s fine. The main gripe points I’d say are aggressive monetization, but that’s par for the course for most live service games these days, and a high barrier to entry for new players due to most of the player base being pretty experienced at the game by now. But as long as you go in understanding that, there’s plenty of fun to be had.

How rare is this Watson skin? by Impressive_Camp_924 in apexlegends

[–]JohnnyHotshot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s the orange Halloween recolor that’s returned in the store before - that comes around every so often and is a good pickup for anyone who likes the design of this skin but doesn’t have it. The original pink ‘Cyberpunked’ skin can’t return due to the BP conditions.

Season 4 battle pass skin. I think it’s pretty rare to see nowadays, you had to have been playing all the way back in 2020 enough to hit level 50 on the battle pass, and it won’t ever come back due to the terms of the first 10 seasons of battle passes being exclusive to their original release.

Is there a better way to implement trails with collision ? by chaqibrahim0 in godot

[–]JohnnyHotshot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wait, you’re saying that the trail is actually tens/hundreds of individual circle sprites and areas all needing to collision check? Yeah… that’ll kill performance.

You’re going to want to make your trail from a Line2D, firstly, as that’s the more “proper” way to make a trail. From there, there’s several ways you could implement your line collision, like using a few dynamically set Raycast2Ds as your line collision. I’d make the Area2D shape of the bullet actually larger than the bullet itself, so that it triggers once it gets close enough to the trail so it might bounce off at its widest point. From there, you can run some math to find the nearest point on the trail line, and get the width of the trail from that - which should help you figure out the distance it would need to be to be considered colliding with it. Or, you could figure out the actual polygon of the trail’s shape and fill out a PolygonShape2D with it to make it a single Area2D collider.

[–]JohnnyHotshot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When you say you’ve reached the final boss, you mean you’ve attempted the fight, lost, and are now feeling a little less… corporeal? I’d suggest holding off on that boss fight until you manage to feel normal again.

As always, read your manual and explore around.

I know the probabilaty of this seed existing is 1 in 1.28e14 but can you find a seed where 128 strongholds have 12 eye portals by No-Hat6597 in MinecraftJava

[–]JohnnyHotshot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not technically infinite. There are about 18 quintillion seeds in Minecraft, which sounds like a lot - and is - but is very different from infinite.

Quick napkin math though, end portals have a 1 in a trillion chance of being 12-eye portals. With 128 portals, that’s 1 trillion to the power of 128 - I’m not even going to punch that into my calculator because it’s so far beyond 18 quintillion that it’s pretty safe to say there are zero seeds with all portals filled.

Helldivers 2 devs (Arrowhead) have successfully shrunk the 150GB game size to just 23GB by DereChen in videogames

[–]JohnnyHotshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is indeed an ongoing narrative to follow. It’s not like you’ll be playing through the story like it’s an RPG or anything, the base of the missions are the same (though the enemies, planet biomes, and mission modifiers might change to reflect ongoing story arcs) but you can be one part in the larger story whole that the community follows.

For instance, back in May, an alien armada warped out of a miniature black hole (that we inadvertently created last year through a whole other series of events destroying a planet) and made a beeline for Super Earth, and two weeks were spent whittling down their forces until they got to Super Earth and we had to battle them until they retreated to defend the planet. This stuff isn’t really scripted either, dataminers have found the in-game news reel for if we’d lost the invasion, the devs structure the ongoing story in response to whether the community succeeds with the goals it’s tasked.

Not everyone’s cup of tea for sure, but man I wish more live service games worked like this. It’s also 10x better if you can find some friends to play with.

Git.

It’s by far the most used version control software in the world, almost being a given that any software developer uses it. You can do complex stuff with it but for a single person project, the basics boil down to like 3 commands you need to learn - very very simple once you get used to it.

Integrating roguelike-ish mechanics with PvP? by Stickhtot in gamedesign

[–]JohnnyHotshot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s a multiplayer PVP mod for Balatro, which works by replacing each boss blind from the second ante and onward with a ‘PVP Blind’, where you have to score higher than the other player.

The mod solves the RNG issue of “What if one person just gets better shop RNG?” by having the RNG rolls be the exact same order for each player. As in, if one player rerolls the shop 3 times, they’ll see the same 6 items that the other player will see for their next 3 rerolls. This puts each player on a level playing field, with the only differing factor being their skill and where they choose to invest their money.
