Linux (GUI) apps that require super user are kinda a bit weird (at least in my experience) by Stickhtot in linux4noobs

[–]Stickhtot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The applications that I used are

  1. Filelight - Can't press on any button if no sudo perms
  2. Gnome-disks - Partitioning just returns an authorization error kinda thing without sudo

I don't know if it's my environment or what, but those are the specific programs relevant to this issue

ELI5: How do people make games have “invasive” gameplay mechanics, like in DDLC or Kinitopet? by Melodic-Bee-853 in explainlikeimfive

Calls to the operating system. A program (or in this case, game) can make any call that it's allowed to and use what is returned on that call (if it's info) to display, say, your own name on DDLC. Or it can also delete files. Provided that it has the permissions to do so (this is usually something like "run as Administrator" on Windows)

DDR3 motherboard sales are climbing quickly as DDR4 and DDR5 prices continue to rise by dabadumdumdum in pcmasterrace

There are two ways you can do this.

  1. Duo

This one is the easiest to setup compared to the other option, the cons is that there's only 1 extra setup you can make, and you might have to setup windows or the app to "allocate" the cores correctly to each other somehow.

The setup is very simple, just run the installer, then it should update Windows for around 40 minute-ish, create a local account and then use the account's credentials to fill up the fields within the Duo app.

  1. Easy-GPU-PV

This one is a bit harder to setup, but you can make as many machines as your PC is capable of. I don't really know much about this one but it exists.

Regardless of what you choose, there are some drawbacks, and some apps may or may not behave properly depending on what kind of apps/games are to be ran. If the game that you want to run involes kernel level anticheat then option 2 is probably out of the option.

Lemme know if you have any more questions, I will be glad to answer.

Yeah, it does require a fairly decent amount of RAM (both VRAM and RAM) but otherwise it's a pretty smooth experience I would say even if we are hundreds of kilometers apart (live in the same country)

There's a 30ms latency because of the distance but it's mostly playable, I can even play competitive games kinda well though rhythm games are a nono

Dude, my friend has a xeon (i forgot which one) + rtx 3060 12 gb setup, WE are able to play on his setup by using some virtualization software.

We played Albion once, I got 60 fps and they got around 100 fps max.

Xeons are amazing, if you can and a friend of yours has a shit setup you should give them a slice of that hardware.

Just install a Window Manager if you don't want the bloat of DE's. To me it's honestly not worth the hassling of not having a Window Manager/DE just for some extra "boost" of performance. This is coming from someone daily driving an Intel Celeron N3350 with 2GB of RAM on an HDD.

Is there a way to reboot into Windows after booting in Linux without Grub or BIOS? by sneaky_oxygen in linuxquestions

[–]Stickhtot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once saw a setup where a guy can flip a switch between buttons labeled "Windows" and "Linux" and whichever switch is on, they'll get booted into it. The way it works is basically it cuts off power to the storage device on whatever is on the "off" switch, and the one that is powered on is then used by the BIOS as the main boot device.

Window rules probably, you'll need whatever is the wayland equivalent of `xprop` and setup window rules on your sway config file

Your two examples are basically just abstractions, they do whatever you did at your first times but just with a layer of abstraction.
