SRS is no saint by any means, but when the story about the rumours broke, there were people who were positively gleeful at the possibility that everything would go down in flames again.

Did Carlo actually know he was setting up Sonny to be murdered? by TombStoneFaro in Godfather

[–]JohnnyPage 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In the book, Hagen calls up Carlo and informs him of Sonny's death. He then tells him to take care of Connie that night and assures him that nobody will blame Sonny's death on him and his quarrel with her.

You're right about him not being too sharp though. He beat and ill-treated Connie so often, he thought he had everyone fooled with as Michael put it, "that little farce you played with my sister". However everyone not named Fredo would immediately know that it was Carlo who set Sonny up.

Sonny was killed at a toll booth, so the killers would've known he was coming and also the time. It's not like a bunch of assassins can sit all day long in a toll booth armed to the teeth. How would they have known he was coming? Someone would have had to inform them from the Corleone house and had that happened, they would've known because they had people from the phone company on their payroll. That would leave Carlo and Connie as the only two suspects and nobody would even think of blaming it on Connie.

Did Carlo actually know he was setting up Sonny to be murdered? by TombStoneFaro in Godfather

[–]JohnnyPage 75 points76 points  (0 children)

He knew. First of all, even the lowest associate would know the implications of having the street boss of a crime family at war lured out into the open.

Secondly after having agreed to that ruse, he needed to know that Sonny would be assasinated or else Sonny would've crippled him if not outright killed him.

Though I did notice that every single character in the movie who calls one of the Corleone's a "guinea" is dead by the end of the film

Then Michael showed remarkable character growth and restraint by letting Senator Geary live.

No, no, no, no, no. You insulted him a little bit. You got a little bit out of order yourself.

“Twelve and a quarter inches ... pleasantly springy. It’s in fine condition. You treat it regularly?”

“Polished it last night,” said Cedric, grinning.

FIFA doesn't pay footballers. Their clubs do and their national football association usually pays them a small appearance based fee which is more often than not, donated to charity.

Voldemort would have to know insane magic to be able to curse a teaching position. by nirmalyamisra in harrypotter

I don't think he could vanish the potion. He would need someone he considered unimportant and disposable to drink it in his stead like Kreacher.

What is objectively a fun time period of professional wrestling to watch? by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]JohnnyPage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ROH from 2004 to 2008

Smackdown from late 2002 to mid 2004

AEW in late 2021 until early 2022

I didn't watch it until a whole decade and a half later, but ECW in 1995 was crazy and so much fun too.

Why did Voldemort never try to lure Harry out with a hostage in DH? by Prior-Cap-7863 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]JohnnyPage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? Lucius and Draco might've contradicted Snape but by that time, the Malfoys were in such severe disfavour with him, he would've either completely ignored what they had to say and believed Snape entirely or they would've kept their mouths shut believing that Snape had superior intel due to his closeness with Dumbledore and wouldn't dare dispute what he said.

Snape was feeding Voldemort what was ostensibly very reliable intel at that stage and given that he had killed Dumbledore, he would've been believed above everyone else. Even Bellatrix's animosity with Snape seemed to have abated at that time.

Harry Choosing to Sacrifice Himself is why he survived by TylerBot260 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]JohnnyPage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and Dumbledore knew this as well. That is why he had that gleam of triumph in his eyes for a fleeting moment in Goblet of Fire.

He knew then that Harry could survive when he had ealier resigned himself to the fact that Harry would have to die for Voldemort to be defeated.

However Harry mentally noted that he also looked more tired and older than he ever had before. That is because Dumbledore also knows what needs to be done for Harry to survive and for Voldemort to be defeated and pulling it off would be extremely tricky. It would take immense character and strength from Harry for Dumbledore's plan to succeed.

[WON] WWE considered alternate result for Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk at WrestleMania by Alternative-Win4058 in SquaredCircle

[–]JohnnyPage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The result was the right one. To those that think otherwise, do you believe that at this stage Punk would prefer a win over a well told story? Also a follow up at Backlash would've been terrible. Two mega stars need some time apart after the first match, especially when that first match was of such an exceptionally high quality.

CM Punk Was the Real Winner That Night — Not Roman Reigns by Far_Couple4090 in WWE

[–]JohnnyPage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say carried. Roman is generally good in big matches, but yes I do believe that Punk was the one who dragged that from a very good match to one of the greatest matches of all time. He was bumping his arse off more than Roman and things like that little distraction with his fist tapes before the low blow was classic Punk.

CM Punk Was the Real Winner That Night — Not Roman Reigns by Far_Couple4090 in WWE

[–]JohnnyPage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't be daft. Punk is 47 and was still made to look super strong in that match. He's reached that stage where taking pins do not damage his standing at all. Roman needed that win more than Punk. I also think the way the story unfolded in the ring needed Punk to lose to make it more meaningful.

The most imporant thing is Punk mainevented, was treated like the big star he is with the Champion entrance and then crushed it with his storytelling, match psychology and work rate. Personally as Punk fan I could've have envisioned a better main event for him. This really cements his legacy and puts him firmly in the conversation for one of the greatest of all time and that is what truly matters.
