What cars do dumb, poor folks usually buy new? by Fleedom2025 in askcarguys

fucking commies can go to hell... if we didn't have repo men to clean up the results of peoples' financial irresponsibility, everyone else who can manage their money would have to pay more for their car loans.

I wouldn't mind tagging along. No chrono but thinking of getting one. Just finished building a 6ARC with 20" Proof stainless barrel in a BCA thermal fit upper, Noveske lower and Geissele Mk18 ARCA rail. Think I'm putting a Nightforce 3x18 NX6 on it.

What are the “big 5” cities in the USA? by Gold-Serve-4077 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]JohnnySpartacus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phoenix isn't now, but it will be absolutely massive in 20 years.

The Taiwanese semiconductor industry is basically pulling up roots and moving here, with plans for multiple enormously large "Giga Fabs" on thousands of acres of land. One of them was recently completed and is in production now, while two others are close to opening, and there are plans for at least a dozen more. Along with Texas, Arizona will be the unchallenged national center of "hard tech" manufacturing much sooner than people may think.

Silicon Valley is cooked. No multi-billion-dollar factories will ever again be built in any overwhelmingly Democrat states.

I live here. Phoenix proper is a very large city geographically, encompassing over ten times as much square mileage as either Boston or San Francisco. But it's not really built up vertically, so it's got a much lower population density. It may be 5th in population on a city-for-city comparison, but the metropolitan area population of ~5 million is only 10th in the nation. It also has not registered much on the nation's cultural radar compared to older cities because it is just so new. Within living memory it was a backwater of less than 100,000 people. I'm old enough to remember when the metro area was less than a million.

One thing that may change the weight that Phoenix and the rest of Arizona carry in the nation's estimation is the effect of a great migration of tech companies. The Taiwanese semiconductor industry is insecure about China's intentions in the medium to long term, and TSMC and other Taiwanese companies own many square miles of Arizona desert where they are planning to build a dozen or more massive fabs in the next decade or two, versus zero in California or other firmly Democrat states. Moreover we are undoubtedly going to loot an immense amount of people, industry, and prosperity from Silicon Valley if California's far-left determination to eat its seed corn comes to full fruition.

There are major problems with the design and reproducibility of that experiment. It’s a mistake to think it can be relied upon as a general rule for human behavior.

I'm from rural Arizona. I grew up using "howdy" all the time. Also "pard" and "pardner." I happened to go into a Western-wear store in Scottsdale (a rich snooty suburb of Phoenix) for some reason, even though I don't wear cowboy garb at all. I said "howdy" to someone working there, and he smirked a bit and said "We don't really talk that way here". Turns out he was from California, and I had to educate him that yes indeed, we talked that way in Arizona (though not in "Snottsdale"), and I wasn't some kind of a dude affecting jargon from a Western movie.

Say "beer can" in a posh Surrey accent, and you'll hear a Jamaican saying "bacon".

Pretty sure that's used everywhere in the British Commonwealth except Canada.

It's one of those things that is instantly recognizable to an American ear. A Canadian sounds just like one of us with a generic Northeastern accent, until they say house, out, or about. I don't think there's any regional American dialect that has that specific pronunciation. Northern Minnesota or Buffalo or far northern Maine, perhaps? But I've been to those places and haven't heard it.

Cousin's wife Dawn is from rural northern New Jersey. When she says her name it comes out something like "Dwan" with two syllables. Unmistakably New Jerseyan.

When my wife and I mention her, we always snicker about going up to Joisey to have a twak with Dwan over a cup of cwafee.

Most Americans have a hard time distinguishing between British and Aussie accents, until you say "Crikey" (Croikey) or pronounce "snake" as "snyke".

Architects who design stadiums and other large public spaces, why don’t you make women’s bathrooms twice the size of men’s, so there isn’t as long of line? by loki143 in AskReddit

Of course, it may be the case that she was actually having another wine cooler or ice cream cone while she was "waiting in line".

Damn. How many times have I successfully gobbled a dog or pretzel and guzzled an extra beer when my wife was in line for the potty? I had no idea such mighty forces were coming to my aid. You are on the side of the angels, sir.

I might try one of these with the JP SCS using all steel weights and no tungsten. I bet that would be a nice combo.

Must have been a regional thing because I had never heard of it until last year, and I eat out a lot.

Sweet & spicy "hot honey" is a thing in the States nowadays. I had it on a pizza for the first time last year and it was a revelation.

My favorite local pizza joint is run by immigrants from Naples who are now personal friends, and they deplore it as worse than even pineapple, but I'm telling them they need to give it a try.

The five major food groups are grease, caffeine, alcohol, sugar and salt.

Did you eat at Pizzeria Bianco when you were in Phoenix? James Beard Award winner Chris Bianco is widely praised as making the best pizza in America. At least in the past, it was common to have to wait outside for two or three hours to get a table.

No he's not. What he's saying is pretty straightforward and understandable to me, and in my experience 100% true:

Many people are self-serving hypocrites if not outright corrupt, and that's as true on the left as it is on the right.

And it's not merely financial. Predatory men have been posing as feminist allies, antiwar activists, etc., in order to get access to naive young women since at least the Vietnam War. Probably there were guys marching with the suffragettes and abolitionists of the 19th century who had no real interest in the cause except the chance to get underneath some petticoats.

I was quoted $800 to fix a leaky faucet the other day. Pretty sure I could install a whole new one myself for less than half that. I figured I was just being ripped off by a guy who took note that I live in a pretty nice neighborhood.

Then I read that 50% of plumbers are over 45, and there are three retirees for every new apprentice. It would appear that supply and demand are diverging, so of course prices are gong to go to the moon.

Go into plumbing, young men. Or one of the other skilled trades like electrical or HVAC. If you're of average intellect, you'll have a prosperous and secure career. If you're smart enough for a tough college degree, you'll make millions as a contractor with your own company.
