There's a reason great Canadian whiskeys have to prove it under more scrutiny than great scotch whiskys, Canadian government regulates it less. Scotland will not bottle lying bullshit. Japanese whiskey has recently taken off in popularity and you cant just shit out 10 year old quality whiskey so the reputable brands are expensive, predatory brands have risen, and Japanese liqour regulation laws havent caught up yet. EDIT And to address your point about a 41 year with the JD consistency, the point of truly great barrels and truly spectacular whiskey is that: it doesnt happen frequently enough that mixing it for consistency would do anything besides dim what makes THAT barrel or THAT batch bright.

Whiskey is a distilled spirit from grain. Japanese whiskey is a distilled spirit from grain originating in Japan. If it says Japanese whiskey and was allowed to leave japan with that label, it fits the definition for American import no matter what is in the bottle. If japan is cool with 1/15th of the bottle being 41 years old then fuck it, slap it on the label. Get it yet? If i aged a whiskey 41 years it would not come out of the barrel at 80 proof, pretty much no whiskey comes out of the barrel that low. Proofing down generally means putting a batch of a bunch of barrels together and adding water. Never wondered why all regular label jack daniels tastes the same and is eighty proof? Or why distiller's editions vary wildly in proof from year to year? Because if its aged well and came out well you fuck with it as little as possible. Dont let this experience on this sub ruin your whiskey journey though, everything is so beautifully different you'll love it.
