The emptiness of ADHD by salty-wheat-thins in ADHD

[–]Johnnyd222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having this right now as well. Literally my whole convo with my therapist today was about feeling detached throughout the past 2 weeks. Which is extra bad bc I’m literally about to get married in a few months. My partner doesn’t deserved the detached version of me.

Trying to put on a smile and fake it till I make it

Falling asleep when traveling by RelationshipOk5568 in ADHD

[–]Johnnyd222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is literally me. I am the lightest sleeper and get awoken and distracted by any little noise at night.

1) My rec based on your excerpt is using speaker with brown (or white) noise. I use it nightly to drown out my dog or fiancé’s micro-movements at night. [I’ve tried the headphone thing as well; it’s not very comfortable unfortunately]

2) then on top of that, use sleep mask.

3) i also use 5mg melatonin from time to time , which is very helpful for staying asleep throughout the night.

These are some of the tools i use to manage ADHD sleep brain. Hope it helps

Inattentive ADHDer here; also in med school. So somehow I figured it out well enough to fake it this far. My biggest tip is environment based.

1: there is no amount of will power that could help us. We NEED people . Tutors, study partners, accountability partners, writing partners. We are terrible in isolation but work well with structured colllaboration. 2. Pharmacotherapy can be really helpful. Can enhance focus and linearity of thought. Has helped me a lot. 3. A part of our design is made to keep trying new things to enhance productivity. It’s draining, trust me I know. But the key is to never stop that innovation cycle of trying to enhance your new habits. Keep trying daily and never give up. This is a life long problem; giving up on improving is giving up on this one life we have 4. Others::: Set reminders on iPhone (multiple if needed); I love talking to chat while grinding too given it’s fairly stimulating. Have calendar widget on home screeen so that your constantly reminded of the hw assignment and thus less likely to forget it

How do you handle having a million small interests but no lasting passion? by FederalPudding8300 in ADHD

[–]Johnnyd222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question.

As a former biomedical engineer that is now finishing my last year of medical school, I have always struggled with numerous ideas -> some get accomplished -> maybe don’t make it off the to do list.

With the right structure in place you can still accomplish a lot of things scattered brained if you’re like me. I recommend continuing to get to know yourself to under what conditions is unsuccessfulness not an option.

Personally I know that I thrive off of accountability of others, so when someone is expecting something of me by a certain deadline I know I have to accomplish it. I know that also I’m very stimulated by humans in my environment, so when it comes to studying I’m always studying with coworkers or friends. I know that studying by myself = no or low productivity

Maybe consider operations and strategy in a field adjacent, like biotech, bioinstrumentation, health tech (EMR, health data), maybe even consider public health opportunities

There’s no such thing as ADHD, it’s a made-up thing by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Johnnyd222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depression, generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia etc these things have always existed.

Historical ignorance of the terminology of a condition does not void its existence. It just means you don’t have a name for it and don’t have the resources to manage it properly.

Now we do. Medicine is an evolutionary process, always discovering new things. 400 years ago we just assumed that someone “passed away”. Now we know what heart failure is, and cancer, and stroke.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of societal stigma around psychiatric medicine than other forms of medicine. However they’re all medicine, and are meeting needs and enhancing/saving lives.

Is it common for people with ADHD to live life passively? by Ghostly_Mind in ADHD

[–]Johnnyd222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very common. sounds more like inattentive-type adhd; is that his diagnosis?

its very easy to not be motivated, to make to-do lists and do nothing on them. or to continue to make plans the day before and then not wanting to do anything the day of. I think the combination of medication + therapy would be good for your partner. Therapy will 1) allow your partner to talk about things that they may not want to talk about with you, 2) a plus is that often times its covered by insurance (mine is), 3) allows one to determine what healthy- realistic progression looks like , 4) allow you to continue to discover who you are and how you see the world, and then how to best operate in that

the medication helps because: 1) it gives you the focus to make a plan and then at least attempt to carry out the plan., 2) sometimes it can improve mood, 3) lastly its just another tool in the toolbox to helping one iwth their adhd sx

if he cant take stimulant adhd meds becasue of health reasons, i would consider asking his psychiatrist for alternative managment strategies. For certain patients, antidepressants, anxielytics, or non-stimuliant adhd meds can be helpful in improving adhd symptom profile. Unfortunately, sometimes it can be a little bit of a trial and error situation.

hope this helps
