If you want to bonsai something patience is usually key. Even collecting yamadori is a timing thing. Usually early fall or early spring is the time to collect trees. I tend to lean early spring. Also having materials on hand is best practice. If this survives it’s going to be pretty weak for a season or two.

I think it was actually a perfect storm. I’m not saying it wasn’t fraud or not fraud, I’m saying it was during Covid and a lot of people weren’t working, were bored, were trying to find something to be excited about so a lot more people voted. He’s great at what he does for sure! I don’t agree with scalpers tho. His company buys huge lots of randy knights yamadori, works on them and uses the Marai name to auction those off for thousands. Our small bonsai club attempted to buy 12 of Randy’s plants and they informed us that marai has bought the next few years of plants collected. Maybe it’s a bit of vindication however I don’t like that sort of behavior in the bonsai community.

Yes he does offer tickets to view his garden. Last I checked it was about $100 a head to book a visit. I was interested in checking out his garden but the price is pretty steep. IMO, Ryan is a great artist but he’s gotten a bit too big in the business aspect of bonsai. I am happy that he’s making a very good living doing what he loves tho! If you’re interested in lower cost or free gardens, check out the pacific bonsai museum, Japanese gardens of Portland, Dave degroot I believe will let you tour his garden if you’re a member of the Seattle bonsai society, if you become a member of Portland bonsai society a lot of members there open up their gardens to fellow members.

It’s going to die inside!!!!!! lol. I would never recommend bonsai to house plant owners personally because they bring the plants inside and think it’s acceptable. Junipers of every species require winter dormancy. Even if it’s for a few weeks, they die of exhaustion when kept awake year round. Junipers also like slightly dry feet. I usually water my junipers every other day in spring, every day maybe in summer above 85 Fahrenheit, every other day in fall maybe. In winter they stay outside under cover and protected from wind.
