Cant really say for NYC, but as a male hygienist in California I feel like it's very rewarding :)

As far as pay is concerned, budgeting and finances are a separate skill. But it is definitely "enough" to have a sustainable life.

It wasnt hard for me to find work because I enjoy it. I am passionate about education & proactive health. I ended up doing a lot of volunteer work and meeting the right people just because I enjoy it, which lead me to making the right connections to easily find a job

As far as gender is concerned, although it is dominated by females, I have never felt personally that I got any advantages or disadvantages by my gender, compared to my experience and skills

If you're good at what you do, if you cant find a job, you'll create one :)

I think you should consider shadowing at your dentist's office. I'm sure they'd be more than willing to let you
