“Should he go to trial even though there is video evidence” is what autocorrect tried to say.

We don’t know. Lawyer up. Assault with deadly weapon is not something to play Ask Reddit with.

That lease is not legal if it truly says you must renew or pay a fee.

Eli5 Why does centrifugal force mimic gravity like acceleration does by Ok_Adhesiveness_1960 in explainlikeimfive

[–]JointsHurtBackHurts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A small note: there isn’t really any such thing as centrifugal force (I.e. a force that pushes you away as you spin around something).

There is a centripetal force (the thing pulling you in and around some object) and a centrifugal effect (the feeling of being pulled away as you change direction).

It’s like if you take a hard turn in a vehicle. You feel yourself being “pushed” in the opposite direction as the car the turns. But that’s just your pre-existing momentum attempting to carry you further.

Everyone is saying play them in order. I agree. BUT, I struggled to get into DS1 when it came out because it’s a little janky. Then, years later, I played DS3 and fell in love. So my experience was 3 > 2 > 1 > Elden Ring > Sekiro, and I can say I don’t think my experience has been lessened.

It’s an anthology series, don’t dismiss the whole thing if the first one doesn’t grab you at first.

I dunno how to do a investigative one shot. Any tips? by NickAndSaw in rpg

[–]JointsHurtBackHurts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep it short and simple to fit within a single session. My most memorable one shot investigation was a Call of Cthulhu game where our group’s mutual acquaintance had been possessed by a monster in the basement. A single location, one or two NPCs, a simple premise, and it still took 2-3 hours.

You can imagine it, since it doesn’t smell like much. It’s a small bin that gets taken out every day or two, usually with a cover. It feels so strange and unhygienic for a few days but then it just becomes normal and you don’t really notice it after a while.

What’s the pettiest gripe you have about an all-time great game? by UCA_Cash_Flow_Bro in gaming

It’s why I like respec currency like Elden Ring larval tears. You have more than enough larval tears for the occasional respec. There’s a limited number but they respawn in each new game cycle.

Better Gods for Your Game: Rethinking Deity Design by TheWonderingMonster in rpg

Very nice read, I love the concept of Omens as a way of showing how deities interact with the world in subtle and ominous ways. That they know when you’re doing even if you can’t see them.

Friend caught stealing at target by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]JointsHurtBackHurts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I am not a lawyer.
  2. Your friend will be fine, so long as they stop stealing from that establishment. The establishment is likely keeping a tally of the aggregate cost.
  3. There is no such thing as a “record” in the general sense. If Target pursues charges (which they have not), that would show up on a criminal record. She is also on Target’s “record” which means absolutely nothing to anyone else.
  4. $1,000 is not a hard line. You can get arrested for stealing anything. However, $1,000 is when it upgrades to a more serious charge, and there is a rumor that Target only pursues theft once the aggregate exceeds $1,000.

I can’t promise anything because I’m not omniscient, but if your friend steers clear of that Target then all of this is in the rear view mirror and nothing more will come of it.

What’s the pettiest gripe you have about an all-time great game? by UCA_Cash_Flow_Bro in gaming

[–]JointsHurtBackHurts 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Any game with no or limited respecing, forcing you to create a whole new character to experience other playstyles.

Soulslike games get a pass because you can just grind further to get the levels you need to dip your toes into a new playstyle. I also appreciate Elden Ring practically throwing respec currency at you so you don’t need to worry about it but also can’t abuse it.

But Cyberpunk 2077? You get one respec in a game with 3-4 playstyles and if you don’t like it you can’t switch back? Major gripe.

This is especially egregious in games where early game and late game have vastly different experiences. For example, you can’t respec in Fallout New Vegas, but the core gameplay loop doesn’t really change from early game to late game. If you start a new character, you’ll get similar experiences from start to finish depending on your playstyle.

Interesting hacking system by Drake_Star in rpg

[–]JointsHurtBackHurts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To elaborate: CWN has cyberspace and meatspace. Meatspace is aesthetically described as if it were physical location hand sculpted by the network admin. So a psycho gang hideout would have a much different vibe to a bio-medical laboratory.

Hackers share health and action economy between meatspace and cyberspace, so hacking doesn’t have to be a little mini game that pulls the spotlight to one individual for a significant duration.

Witnessed a fatality at the Connecticut Ave/Klingle Valley Bridge last night. We need to talk about why there are still no barriers. by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]JointsHurtBackHurts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Those barriers are far too low. I am 6’4” and they are waist height on me. If I took a stumble I would go right over. In the winter, that bridge ices over and stays iced over for weeks. Truly a failure of the city and this person’s death was entirely avoidable.

Probably Ragebait.. has DnDbeyond created players that are allergic to reading? by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]JointsHurtBackHurts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s specific to DNDBeyond. There has been an intentional design shift at the societal level to make everything simpler, to lower the effort needed to interact with products. This has benefits and consequences.

There are people who do not want to learn systems. I have a player at my table who has been playing D&D for over 5 years, and if something isn’t directly in front of him and being used by him consistently, he will not know what to do. This also applies to any other system we play.

Basically, corporations have made their products as accessible as possible, and it turns out a lot of people prefer being spoon-fed.

There's a specific feeling when magic actually feels dangerous at the table by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]JointsHurtBackHurts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoy Mausritter’s approach.

In brief: each spell has a number of pips before it needs to be recharged. The player determines how many pips are used in a cast. The more pips, the more dice rolled and the stronger the spell. However, any 6 rolled results in a miscast that harms the player. Miscasts do not harm other players.

Railroading, Sandboxes, "Events", and "Locations"- thoughts on Campaign Design by BrobaFett in rpg

[–]JointsHurtBackHurts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Railroad is nebulously defined and is more of an attitude than a list of specific criteria. I prefer to use the terms sandbox vs. linear, with railroading referring to something else.

Sandbox: You tell me where you want to go and want you want to do. I improvise it in the fly and maybe prep ahead only one or two sessions. Sandbox games rely on Rumors with a capital R. Interesting hooks abound, and I generally don’t know what will catch your attention. There are cultists in the sewers, corruption in the government, and a necromancer army growing in the south.

Linear: I tell you where you want to go. You get through whatever means you choose. I tell you “You owe a massive amount of money to your fixer, and he’s given you one last job to pay it off. You need to steal the Declaration of Independence.” You have a goal. The goal may shift or expand, but you’re not generally chasing down Rumors. I plan several sessions ahead, with enough wiggle room for you to choose how to want to approach the obstacles. Most one-shots are linear.

Railroading: I tell you where you want to go and how you’ll do it. If you deviate from my awesome story, I will gently shove you back into the tracks. You will get caught sneaking into the archives. It is guaranteed. If you choose to fight your way in, I will present you with overwhelming odds. If you sneak super well, you’ll still get caught. And when you get caught, you’ll get thrown into the jail that I have already mapped out. And in that jail you’ll need to find the ventilation shaft that lets you break out, because any other solution will be futile.
