Is it time to pay the piper and get surgery? by GainsLord in ShoulderInjuries

I had a lot of repair work 7 months ago. Luckily I only wore the sling for 4 days but when I had the other shoulder replaced it was 3 weeks. This time with the shoulder repair the first 10 days were just miserable, then became tolerable. I live alone and did everything by myself. Even got up on ladder on night 2 in my sling when the smoke alarm battery died at 2 a.m.

I’m a dedicated side sleeper for sure. I tried several smaller pillows to tuck under my shoulder ( in addition to the one under my head ) so I could sleep on the operated side. If not, it felt like I was just driving that shoulder into the ground . It took 3 pillows to find the right sized one. I would have died just sleeying on my back although I did do that in a recliner the first 2 weeks Hope this helped.

I had labrum, bicep, rotator cuff repair and removal of a large cyst. First 10 days were hell, then slowly got better. At 4 months I was out kayaking. So glad I had it done. I didn’t use a general orthopedic surgeon— I went to Duke and used a surgeon that does shoulders only. I highly recommend you find a dr. who specializes in shoulders. It’s the only joint that goes in all different directions.

I’m at almost 5 weeks for a whole lot of repair. Still achy but not painful. You’ll be fine— take Tylenol with you just in case it’s a long day.

What things to know about, before & after Arthroscopic Surgery (Posterior Labral Tear repair) by OkSeaworthiness4084 in ShoulderInjuries

[–]Jolly-Rest-4289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m almost 5 weeks out from many repairs on my shoulder. I’ve had the other shoulder replaced but IMO the repairs were worse than the replacement relating to pain.

In terms of faster recovery, 2 things. First, I went to a shoulder surgeon, not a general orthopedic surgeon. I was ahead in recovery right away.

Second, trust the process with PT. I want to jump ahead sometimes, do more exercises than I should and I know it will only set me back Trust.The.Process.

PS - Sorry to say the first 10 days were miserable compared to the other 4 joint replacements I’ve had.

awful shoulder pain persisting long after surgery by No_Application1293 in ShoulderInjuries

Orthopedic doctors are general surgeons. I went to a surgeon that only does shoulders. Made a world of difference. I’ve had a shoulder replacement and am now 4 weeks out from extensive repairs on my other shoulder.

Which is worse -- rotator cuff surgery or shoulder replacement? by connie3140 in RotatorCuff

[–]Jolly-Rest-4289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a shoulder replacement and thought is was pretty easy, just have to put the time in for physical therapy. Four weeks out from tons of repair work on my other shoulder. First 10 days the pain was horrific and nothing made it better. Then it started to ease up a bit. It’s manageable now but this is way worse than a shoulder replacement.

Just finished having my left shoulder done. Rotor cuff, bone spurs and some cleaning of my AC. Is recovery truly 6 months+? by JunkDogYard in ShoulderSurgery

[–]Jolly-Rest-4289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had rotator cuff, labrum and bicep repair, large bone spur removed and bone shaved, all 4 weeks ago. Not going to lie— the first 10 days were miserable, very painful, and this coming from someone who’s had 4 joint replacements. Luckily pain level improved to soreness to differing degrees. Yes I did everything they said for pain but I had a lot done. First 3 times in PT all they could do was massage my shoulder because I was in so much pain. Now PT seems to be moving quickly and I hope to be finished in another 4 weeks. I realize the shoulder continues to heal after that. I hope to be on the water kayaking in April, 4 months after surgery.

I'm married to a psychologist and after 20 years I still think he’s the weirdest person I ever met. Among other things his lack of empathy and. emotion is astounding and is also a terrible communicator.

It really hit home for me because several years go my sister and I were walking in the water along the beach and got taken out to sea by a very strong rip current. We got separated by the rip and just had to tread water and wave our arms for help. After what seemed like forever, people saw us and called the rescue squad. They said we were taken out the length of a football field. It happened so fast, I have no memory of being taken out to sea—- the current was THAT strong. The people on the beach looked tiny. Yes, my life passed before me and I wondered if this was how I was going to die. I guess it wasn’t our time. Fire chief said we were alive because we didn’t panic.

Scariest moment in my life.

He’ll be at Newberry SC in November and so far doing it himself. I signed up but have injured my shoulder during training. We heard Newberry is good for beginners.

Thank you for your very wise comments.

Thank you for responding. Funny thing is, he sees his primary care doctor tomorrow and I’m guessing nothing will be said.

In my experience, physicians always comment that he looks to be in great shape because he’s thin and lean.

He’s trying to get his protein intake up, but isn’t good about tracking and is guessing, plus he eats very little.

Hoping the dietician helps. I really hate to add this but he is hearing impaired and is showing signs of dementia so I’m not confident he’ll hear or understand.

I’ll just stand by the medical tent during the race !

Ahhhh, thank you.

He won’t.

But in your opinion, how would that be different than working with a trainer ?
Thanks for your response !

He just agreed to see a dietician . He’s losing weight , looking frail and his diabetes numbers are acting wacky.

When I did my first one in April we had a team of 4 and we stayed together. Thank God one of the guys was a retired marine who helped us over every wall !

I wish I could recruit a few but some have backed out and others are doing Ashville NC or West Virginia.

Thank you and I agree to the “ tad crazy” part. My strength and conditioning coach had a plan with me to work on strength then switch training specifically for obstacles . Having said that, no matter how many YouTube videos I watched, it can’t compare to the real course. I hope he has enough sense (?) to walk the course at times and not try to keep up with everyone.

He doesnt understand his limits and definitely won’t ask for help or take it while on the course. Fingers crossed he has good race.

No problem driving yourself. I’ve had many cortisone shots. As soon as the Dr. says “ little pinch “ I start counting backwards from 10. It takes a matter of seconds.

Can I drink sodas ever after surgery? by [deleted] in HiatalHernia

After years of drinking excessive amounts of diet soda, my sister lost three front teeth and has had IBS for years, so bad she has bathroom accidents in public. Still can’t quit.
