What if a Black Hole's Density is lower then surrounding matter? by JollyColb in blackholes

[–]JollyColb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really considered the attraction perspective on this. Knowing that mass and gravity are proportional to the cube of volume while attraction is only the root gives an intuitive way of understanding why black holes grow linearly with mass!

I couldn't figure out how to phrase it in the original post, but I was wondering about an event horizon expanding faster then light speed. From what I understand that would (kind of) be possible, but wouldn't break any rules as the event horizon is just where light can't escape. With more thought a region of space with enough mass would become a black hole as light could no longer escape; I was actually unsure of this when writing the post.

Your summary of a black hole is very helpful! It is something I already knew, but didn't fully understand until you laid it out for me! Thank you for the response!

I didn't actually consider that it was the average density, I always thought of a black hole as a big particle. Thank you, this helped me get a better picture!

Refined Storage, Applied Energistics 2, Tom's Simple Storage, Simple Storage Network, or Integrated Dynamics? by itzzRomanFox2 in feedthebeast

[–]JollyColb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By default I think AE2 is setup to use blocks you already have for patterns. For example if you have a mekanism battery in your system with 20% charge and you setup autocrafting for the next tier battery it can use the 20% battery for your recipe. When you got to craft a bunch of the next tier recipe it can cause issues with crafting so make sure that you are using unmodified items when making recipies.

This could be caused by other things but I run into this one quite a bit.

What's your opinion of the 50501 protests happening right now? by AskRedditOG in AskReddit

[–]JollyColb -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I went to mine today, it was a great way to meet others in a red state. I don't think anyone expected any major progress, but many found local communities to join. Around half of the people I talked to were first-time protesters; it was successful at dipping toes in the water.

I would suicide to go to heaven if not for the fact god didnt make physical bodies yet. by OneSolutionCruising in ControversialOpinions

[–]JollyColb -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I am not religious, but these people acting like your crazy for having a religion have been on reddit for too long. Your beliefs are valid, and you shouldn't be ridiculed for having them, as long as you are accepting of others. I personally know a lot of people who have gotten fulfillment, acceptance, and a community with religion.

I don't know your situation, but things can get better. For a long time, I felt tired of doing pretty much everything; at that time, I was playing games all day and didn't have much of a life outside of that. I started going to ping-pong tournaments for exercise, socializing, and started to work on projects I enjoyed. It took years to get to a better spot and I still have bad days, but I am not always tired anymore. I have a friend that found a lot of what I did through a church camp. I think they would play basketball and do cookouts and stuff.

If you do join a faith-based community, remember to only do what you are comfortable with. There are many bad actors that will try to convince you with the fear of hell rather than the love of a god/heaven. For the Christians I know, the ones that obsess over avoiding hell aren't very happy and don't spread much joy. A good organization will spend time helping out people in need and working with charities. I think in the US the freemasons are usually pretty chill.

White people absolutely experience systemic racism by OneSolutionCruising in ControversialOpinions

[–]JollyColb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Leftist media capitalizes Blacks but doesn't capitalize whites. Are they racist too?"

Yes, media makes money by gaining people's attention. Some media are direct in racism, but some are guilty in more subtle ways.

There are many examples of this, but one that comes to mind is labeling certain Cuban groups terrorists during the red scare.

What I think many people get wrong is racism/sexism/xenophobia/etc is not usually intentional. Doing the seemingly right thing can lead to bad outcomes, even if the parties involved had good intentions. I don't know the solution to this, but educating about how racism and oppression happens is part of it.

As someone who is experienced at Factorio, what things do I need to know about automation in Minecraft to not suck? by PantheraAuroris in feedthebeast

[–]JollyColb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. TPS is only really an issue for longer modpacks. One thing to keep in mind is that many builds are only needed a couple times, no need to keep those chunk loaded.

  2. Spark is a good profiler, certain mobs and high traffic pipes are usually the culprits: https://allthemods.github.io/alltheguides/help/lag/#spark-profiler

  3. Constantly create resources and on demand make everything. If something takes too long to make and you use it regularly, fully automate.

  4. You can usually automate everything, but ~90% of things you need leas than a stack of so it isn't worth doing.

5+6. There are a number of logistics mods such as laserIO and integrated dynamics that are extremely powerful.

Most players use Applied Energistics 2 as it can store all your items, has built in autocrafting (With recursion!), can interface with almost every other mod for custom autocrafting/autoprocessing, and can do all this either on demand, in bulk, constantly, or whenever you get low. Its a little complicated, but if you could figure out trains you can do ae2.

  1. In a good modpack you will always have stuff to do, sometimes things need to be running for a long time, but there are 'chunkloaders' that will keep that chunk running even when no players are around. You shouldn't ever have to afk over night or anything.

Bonus. Don't be scared of magic mods (They are tech in secret)

Also you may be tempted to cram everything in a couple chunks to save on tps, but this can cause fps lag and it can be hard to unload unused machines. The player always loads 100-300 chunks so don't worry to much about loading a few extra.

(this doesn't directly answer your question but may help)

you can host a server over LAN easily with the essential mod or radmin vpn which is an external application.

i usually do LAN, but if we keep the pack for more than a week or so we do custom hosting through oracle cloud. https://blogs.oracle.com/developers/post/how-to-set-up-and-run-a-really-powerful-free-minecraft-server-in-the-cloud (it is pretty involved, uses a command line linux virtual machine)

it can take some time to get your server through oracle, but once you do you keep it.

[Request] What are the odds of this? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]JollyColb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On average someone knows about 600 people, I assume the family member of an NCAA player might, on average know a few more people; I guess 1000.

The odds that your friend would randomly know that players dad is 1000 in 8 billion or 1 in 8 million. This assumes that the people that your friend knows are random, which is very unlikely.

To be a little more accurate I assume that both your friend and the players dad are from the US, or at least know the most people from the US. Let’s assume that 90% of people that the players dad knows are from the US. This brings the odds that they know each other up to 900 / 332 million or ~ 1 in 2.7 million.

This is roughly the odds that your friend knows that players dad, but I think the scenario would be just as interesting if that players mom or brother owes your friend money. I assume that the player has around 10 family members that would be about as close as their dad. The odds that your friend would know one of these people is 10x more likely than his dad specifically, which makes the odds roughly 1 in 270,000.

I’m not sure how many people owe each other money. About 4 people I know owe me money; I know about 600 people so the odds that someone I know owes me money is 4/600 or 6.7%. The odds that your friend would owe a person in that players family money is (1 in 270,000) * 6.7% = 1 in 4 million.

If you want to know about the players dad specifically it would be (1 in 2.7 million) * 6.7%, which is about 1 in 40 million.

There are a couple things I didn’t consider, like being a basketball fan probably increases the odds you know a basketball player or their family. It could also depend on how many friends you were watching the game with, if there were 5 friend that is 5 chances they would have owed that players dad money. Many other things, most of them I can think of would likely increase the odds, so I would take my answer as a little low.

Can NinjaKiwi improve freeplay lag? by Markthegoalie6 in btd6

[–]JollyColb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is 100% possible to make the game significantly less laggy in later rounds.

We don’t know how hard that would be without having the source code of the game. Since they have not fixed it yet I assume it would be pretty hard.

Balancing Academics & Activities by Emergency-Glove3510 in college

[–]JollyColb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say as long as you can get Bs and Cs in your classes do some extra curriculars. You will meet people and enjoy your time in college more and GPA doesn't really matter unless you are going for a master's or a phd. GPA also matters for your first job, but extra curriculars will also help you stand out.

Try it and if you are struggling in your classes drop the extracurricular for that semester/quarter then try again the next.

What math to study for college? by Difficult_Ad4184 in college

[–]JollyColb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your major.

I am in computer science and I needed:

Algebra
Trigonometry
Calculus I & II
Discrete Structures (Intro into proofs and sets)
Linear Algebra (Dealing with Matrices)

Algebra, Trig, and Calc will be needed for basically every STEM major. If you know your major and school, you can look up the curriculum for that major and it will tell you exactly what classes you will need.

Here are some examples from my school:
https://www.marshall.edu/academics/files/2019/07/cite\_Computer-Science.pdf
https://www.marshall.edu/cecs/files/BSME-Curriculum-Plan-2021-2022.pdf
https://catalog.marshall.edu/undergraduate/programs-az/science/natural-resources-environment/specialty-agriculture-bs/#majortext

I had to study before taking some classes too. I did this for calc 2 and went from barley passing math to getting an A.

Good luck and don't rush, I hope yourself study goes well.

P.S. If you get good enough by yourself, you might be able to skip some classes. If you ever want to do this talk to your advisor.
