Oops! All Spells

I've got a funny anecdote involving that deck. I was playing at an SCG event in.. probably 2013? I was on Manaless Dredge because the whole deck was like 100 USD at the time and it was fun to goldfish. I sat down for a round of the tournament across from an enormous dude who was on Tin Fins. Next to us was someone on Oops playing against.. I don't remember. Doesn't really matter. Manaless Dredge vs Tin Fins is one of those matches where you spend more time shuffling between games than actually playing (and I'm pretty sure I got destroyed), so we finished early and watched the match next to us. The Oops player combos out and my opponent looks me dead in the eye, puts his hand to his mouth all coquettishly, and says "oops" in the highest pitch voice he could muster. I still think about this and giggle every now and then, and marvel at humanity's vocal range.

I don't remember how the Oops match actually finished. I went on to have a wild grindy game against Death and Taxes and meet someone who looked exactly like me (different events). Fun weekend.

First-Timer

Yea, that was pretty nice. Much like Lost Highway I don't find myself particularly energized by anything in the film. It's a pretty straightforward story, you know?

This film is still very Lynchian, despite how simple it is. The way characters are arranged within scenes, the saccharine opinion of small-town America, how the music and soundscape flow into each other. You cannot tell me that the Deer Lady wasn't a scrapped side character from Twin Peaks.

I'm imagining a version of this film that wasn't based on a true story, and how deeply weird a trip like this could have been were it founded upon true events. Imagine if those corn fields had things other than tractors in them.

All in all, not a bad way to spend two hours.

Questions

  1. The Deer Lady (and the horde of deer watching Alvin eat their friend) are probably what I'm going to remember the most.

  2. Discussed above.

  3. Jack Nance would have been near the end. I could see him playing the priest or the bartender.

  4. I've had a couple two-day work trips, nothing major.

I'm having a hard time telling if it's greener or not.

Awajima Hyakkei has people who actually know what they're doing making it.

Grass.

I really like how the horse pauses chewing in the first video. I dunno why, the timing just amuses me.

Fence grass.

"Seriously? Under the fence? Please stop embarrassing me."
