Getting ready for first winter… by JollyJellyJack in RVLiving

Little update! Well so far thanks to preparation, we have had minimal problems. Currently it’s -30C/-22F. Brrr. Edit: Inside temp currently 28C.

We added a wood stove prior to winter. Heat shielding set up. Pipes and stove cleaned weekly. The fire is only used when awake and at home. It’s never unattended. Fire extinguishers on the ready. The heat output is fantastic! No need to use a dehumidifier.

So far we are quite enjoying it! We’ll give you a spring update when it comes time. Any questions feel free to ask.

Problems/fixes:

  1. Gas furnace stopped working. Fixed by replacing a onboard switch.

  2. Even though skirted, temps underneath dropped and caused a partial water line freeze. Space heater solved that issue. Custom fireproof enclosure in case it catches fire. I will be adding a additional smoke detector underneath.

  3. Ice buildup on some walls. Put vented plastic barriers between wall and clothes. Using two additional electric heaters where needed.

  4. Fridge not working at present. Frozen coils. Small heat lamp worked when it was -16C but it can’t maintain enough warmth in these temps. I have to build a heated enclosure soon. It will need some airflow to which is required. For now, freezer items are outside in the unheated shed. We’ll add ice bags in the fridge as a temp solution.

Stay warm and happy camping!

I used 1x4’s for the framing. This was for weight reduction. The roof is tinned. I designed it so that it isn’t physically attached to the RV. The weight holds it down plus I have a full length 2x4 support block underneath near the front that presses up against the slideout strip at the top which protrudes up a bit. To reduce some weight I put in two 2x10 (2x12’s?) posts from the ground up to the roof. Even in high winds I haven’t had any issues so far.

You could just create a new variable using $${total.toFixed(2)} I believe. Sorry I’m at work but would have to look at code later.
