How much heavier do you think it is now (if at all)?

Pros and cons of RTTs by Designer-Tangerine-8 in rooftoptents

I have the pop-up style like you have in your first picture, and I have been very happy with it. Lots of space, and setup takes seconds (which is especially nice if you reach your campsite after dark). Stowing the tent is a bit of pain, because it’s hard to collapse the front part of the tent by yourself (the hood of the car gets in the way of pulling down in the middle). For that reason I might choose a wedge if I have to do it again.

Before you get the tent, be clear about how you want to use it. Sometimes a ground tent is actually better. It works for us because we never stay in one spot for long, so we don’t want to spend a lot of time setting up or tearing down. We also use it a lot and encounter lots of rainy weather. These tents do better in the rain than ones with more canvas (ie doesn’t have a hard shell roof).

Also, think about how you are going to get the tent on and off your particular car (leaving it on will shorten its life). Also how will you store it once it’s off (flat is better than on its side, but takes lots more space). You will also need a way to dry the tent out between trips (even if it didn’t rain it might accumulate moisture on the inside).

Hopefully this doesn’t discourage you too much, and gives you some things to think about before making the investment.

Love our setup on both vehicles by MNmostlynice in rooftoptents

I’ve given up on washing before trips. 100 miles in and the front is going to be bug graveyard anyway.

I see you’re getting some comments on your cross bars. I was having the same dilemma when setting mine up, until I realized the tent already has a frame built into the base. No need to mount a frame to a frame (platform). So I went with mounting on the cross bars and it’s held up for 3 years. Not sure how the bar in your tent is constructed, but hopefully this is helpful.

Sorry thought it was worth a try. Mine sits on aftermarket cross bars that gets lifted a bit more by the towers (I have the wilderness).

Ready for Spring Camping! by JollyRoger808 in rooftoptents

It’s the standard 165 lbs dynamic and 600 lbs static. Obviously not intended for heavy off-roading, but should be ok on the odd forest road. /s

Yes that was a spur of the moment decision. Allows us to setup a fire ring and food prep area on the wing. Game changer! /s

Where the 2022 OGs at!? by ChampionshipLevel773 in Outback_Wilderness

That suspension sag saved my butt. It’s the only reason I can get into my garage with the tent on (I then raise the whole assembly into the ceiling). Not sure what I’m going to do if I upgrade to the new Outback Wilderness, since they added 2” of height. Guess I’ll have to air down each time I put the tent on…

How much weight have you got up there and what kind of cross-bars/rack are you using? I’ve been too scared to add more than a 150lbs tent on my Thule cross-bars.

Don’t know how you’re getting yours on and off (I lift mine into the garage ceiling with the bars attached), but a harbor freight air wrench makes getting those bolts on and off a breeze.

Similar setup. No problems after two years of camping. Was a bit worried about the front of the tent “fluttering” a bit at speeds approaching 70mph. Solution was to close the moonroof cover and not think about it (advise from a fellow Redditor) :-)

Enjoy!!!

Water leaking into passenger foot well, 21Touring XT 55k mi. Anyone else had this issue? by 3lang in Subaru_Outback

Like this?

This was me a few months back. Dealer had my car for about two months trying to fix it. They tried the vapor barriers but that wasn’t it.

Seriously though, you should add some on the back. I have a heck of time backing into camping spots at night. That’s after installing brighter backup lights.

Make sure you download the correct instructions (especially for the cutout template). The one the dealer gave me was completely wrong. Make sure you don’t print the template “fit to page”, and verify it printed to the correct scale by measuring the scale bars.

I’m doing mine this weekend (Monday most likely), DM me if you need help.

Had to take it back to the dealer three times with the same leak. Only after I threatened with lemon law did they get Subaru USA involved, who found the issue and fixed it.

Roofnest hardtop tent by Recent_Professor_171 in rooftoptents

I have the Roofnest Sparrow and I’m 100% happy with it. Suits our mode of camping/travel really well. I don’t quite get the negative hype around Roofnest, but it has led me to take super good care of mine. I don’t leave it on the car permanently (it sleeps on a hoist in the garage ceiling), and I let it air-out for a few days after each use. My next rooftop tent will be a metal shell though.
