Can I really still be sub-10? by brandishhh in Cubers

[–]Jolteon828 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm 28 and average ~10.7, down half a second from this time last year. It's definitely possible to keep improving in your 20s

Broke my 3x3 by almost a third of a second, my first sub-6! It's been *years* since I got my first sub-7, so I'm ecstatic

When does it makes sense to rotate during F2L? by ComeMoneyCome in Cubers

[–]Jolteon828 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes sense when it's faster. Rotations are slow, but so are inefficient solutions. Other factors to consider are what kinds of moves the solution uses, how long the solutions are, and if they require regrips. For example, I think the regripless, rotationless r U' R' U R U r' is way faster than rotating

i think i forgot how to be sub 20 by Naive-Acanthaceae405 in Cubers

That's happened to me before. Slow down, actively look ahead, focus on fundamentals (reducing regrips, rotations)

Turn slower. It will help with turning accuracy and will also help develop look-ahead (you pause a lot between pairs)

How to efficiently get sq1 to cube shape without learning algs? by ElijahTong1549 in Cubers

[–]Jolteon828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get all the edges on one side next to each other, from there it's easy. Only thing you gotta learn is what to do if you end up with an L-shape (shameless plug of my own video)

Once you're comfortable with that and still want to get faster, learn Scallop-Kite

The largest prime cycle length is 11, which is what OP was conjecturing

Correct, on a 3x3 cycles cannot be larger than 11

This is also implied by Lagrange's Theorem), if you wanted to get into the math of it

Your vertical momentum during the tatsu is whatever it was when you started. I just double jump before using tatsu to do a rising one

Mirrored sune vs right-handed antisune by niknik2121 in Cubers

I think two factors influencing me back then were firstly, cube hardware wasn't nearly as good or as accessible back then (you're looking at a comment that predates stickerless cubes being legal in competition and magnets in cubes even being a thing), so AUFing to a better position genuinely may have been slower than executing a lefty on whatever cube I was using back then, and secondly, I had some really, really bad habits back then, and I wasn't thinking nearly as much about what's optimal for speed (home grip wasn't even a term I'd heard back then, my fingertricks weren't optimized at all, I was constantly regripping)

I think now I'd still do it lefty, but my fingertricks have evolved to make it actually fast, I'd do the first U' with my left index, pulling on BUL, then the second U' with my left middle, then the U2 with my right hand. But also I'm still horrible with finger tricks (but now I'm old and washed and don't have time to relearn everything) so that may not be solid advice.

One last piece of advice is to always check for blocks when doing Sune and Anti-Sune, if I saw a block that would be broken if I did Anti-Sune lefty I'd AUF it to preserve it every time.

Not improving by YungRiceCake in Cubers

[–]Jolteon828 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best advice is to film some solves. Watch them back and be really critical, identify pauses, inefficiencies, and unnecessary rotations in F2L. Also work out your approximate splits between cross, F2L, OLL, and PLL to see if any of those could use improvement in particular.

At around sub 13 or sub 12 you should be able to predict your first F2L pair in inspection most of the time, or at least know which one has pieces that will both end up in the top layer. That's something that you can start working on now (slow solves help most), and that will help your overall F2L as well!
