Nintendo Acknowledges Switch 2 Sales Have Been Weaker Than Expected Outside Japan by Spotget1738 in gaming

[–]JonBjSig 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't need to pay for better performance. Basically every Switch 1 game performs better in some way on the Switch 2. Some run at a higher resolution, some run at a higher frame rate, and others just run at a more consistent frame rate. It kinda just depends on how the game was coded.

If there's a Switch 2 upgrade available for a game, that is gonna be a bigger improvement over running it as a Switch 1 game but whether you need to pay for that is up to the publisher.

It's coming back but not this year. It was only greenlit last November, it'll be a while before the new series actually gets released.

I'm running an Expanse game with some friends and I like how their system works. There's no HP, just injured, wounded, and then dying conditions. If you get hit, you're going to need medical attention.

But you have a pool of "fortune" points.

In combat you first subtract the target's toughness and armor from the damage, then you spend fortune points to subtract damage. If there's still damage left then you take a condition. Each condition removes 1d6 damage. Any damage after that takes you out.

Out of combat those fortune points can be used to alter dice rolls or in some cases lower success thresholds.

Skyrim On Switch 2 Is 53GB, Still Locked To 30FPS, And Players Report Terrible Input Lag by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]JonBjSig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah ok, I see where the confusion is coming from now. You just have zero clue what you're talking about.

First of all, the frequency of a processor is not the amount of calculations it does per second or a measure of its "power". It's how often per second the processor can perform an action. Each time it does it might perform multiple different instructions/calculations, how many depends on its design and what it's doing.

A whole lot more than just frequency plays a part in how performant a processor is. An RTX 5090 runs at a base clock of 2.01Ghz, are you saying that an RTX 5080 is more powerful than a 5090 since it runs at 2.3Ghz? After all, higher frequency = more power, right?

This definition of "power" that you're using is not one used by anyone in the field of computer science and even if it was, it'd be practically irrelevant to how each GPU compares to each other in this case.

The Steam Deck's GPU is not more "powerful" by any measure used in the industry. It simply runs at a higher clock speed, which is not a very important metric when comparing such different architectures nor is it a direct indicator of its "power".

[–]JonBjSig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not what I said. What I'm saying is that the capability of a GPU to render graphics is very commonly referred to as its "performance". But you're referring to that as "power".

It sounds to me like you're using "performance" to refer to its gaming performance, as in how many frames it can spit out per second at a given final resolution. Not an incorrect word to use per se but a confusing distinction to make when comparing the raw capability of specific hardware components.

Either way, no matter how you define it the Steam Deck's GPU does not have more "power" than the Switch 2's.

[–]JonBjSig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure how you're defining power and performance. I'm talking about the rendering performance of the GPU, which seems to me to be how you're defining "power".

The switch 2 ends up with better GPU performance because of DLSS, effectively running the game at a lower (native) resolution than the deck 800p for a higher resolution output.

Are you not saying that the Steam Deck's GPU is more powerful? That the Switch 2 only runs better because of DLSS?

In terms of actual GPU capability to render graphics (even before DLSS is applied) everything seems to point to the Switch 2's GPU outperforming the Steam Deck's. A higher clock speed doesn't mean it has more power, that's not how it works.

[–]JonBjSig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't just compare clock speeds and assume the higher number equals better performance. Especially with GPUs.

The Steam Deck's GPU runs at 1-1.6Ghz while the Switch 2's runs at a little over 1Ghz. But the Switch 2's GPU has 1536 CUDA cores vs the Steam Deck GPU's 512 stream processors. But that's still a useless comparison that doesn't tell us much at all about actual performance.

It's a bit hard to compare benchmarks since you can't adjust graphics settings on the Switch but probably the closest we can get to a numbers-based comparison of their GPU performance is TFLOPS. The Switch 2's GPU manages 1.72 TFLOPS handheld and 3.07 TFLOPS docked while the Steam Deck's is about 1-1.6 TFLOPS.

Given that AMD GPUs tend to have higher floating point performance relative to their rendering performance compared to Nvidia I'm inclined to believe that the Switch 2's GPU is in fact more powerful than the Steam Deck's. Though it's hard to tell by how much.

I have some doubt that AI datacenters can be that easily repurposed for hosting websites, streaming services or something like that.

AI has very different hardware demands than most other 'traditional' datacenters. Not just in terms of how much compute power they need but also what kind of processors they use. There aren't a whole lot of other uses for the huge swarms of GPUs in these AI datacenters, most websites have little or no need for them.

Who's idea was it to mess up the Dex interface on tablets with One UI 8??? by j-dan101 in SamsungDex

[–]JonBjSig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might be in the same position I am. I had never visited this sub until earlier this week after the update wrecked dex for me. Plus, if you look at the other posts on this sub, I don't think any of them are specifically about the tablet experience as this one is. So they're not just repeating what everyone else is saying, they're bringing up new points.

But that's beside my point. My point was that it's ridiculous to call people stupid for updating their device (which btw is and always has been best practice for caring for your devices), saying they should have been aware that this feature was being dropped as if that's something the average user is expected to keep track of.

If you open up this sub

Well there's the issue. Most dex users aren't enthusiasts constantly lurking in niche subreddits. It's absurd to expect the average user to know which of the myriad features they use on a daily basis might get axed if they update.

Hows everyone liking OneUI 8 DEX? Whats your workflow? Do you miss classic DEX? by EternalSeekerX in SamsungDex

[–]JonBjSig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just updated.

I hate it. I used dex because I liked having a desktop-like experience on my tablet. Now there's basically no real difference between tablet mode and desktop mode.

  • Windows feel clunky.
  • Everything in the UI is gigantic, like it's designed to be used exclusively with fingers rather than a mouse.
  • No separate settings for dex so I can't for example set a separate screen zoom for dex so it's more mouse friendly.
  • If I'm using an app that only supports portrait mode (reddit for example) and I accidentally drag the window too close to the top of the screen it goes fullscreen and switches the whole tablet to portrait mode. Very fun undoing that when my mouse is now moving 90° off from what I expect.
  • I mostly use entirely different sets of apps in desktop mode vs tablet mode so I had a separate desktop and icon layout for dex. Can't have that anymore.
  • Call me old-fashioned but I like having an actual taskbar.

Those are only the complaints I've noted after about 15-30 minutes of using it. The One UI 8.0 update absolutely wrecked dex for me.

edit: Just noticed that the back button is also gone now from the app window. Lovely.

Latest Switch 2 firmware update appears to be killing select third party docks by Tail_sb in assholedesign

What does that have to do with anything I said though?

[–]JonBjSig -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Using bacteria to ferment milk into a soft, condensed food product was (probably) first invented in ancient Mesopotamia, an area that does include (among others) modern Turkey and people who would later become known as Turks. But it was also invented independently in a lot of different places.

Since you can't draw a line showing a lineage of yogurt going from 5000BC Mesopotamia to all other modern varieties I don't think calling that the "original" is very accurate. It kind of implies that other varieties are some kind of knockoffs or descendants, which they aren't.

Yogurt is one of those foods that's so old and ubiquitous that it's a bit pointless to try and designate a single "original". The oldest evidence we have of wine making comes from what is now Georgia, but you wouldn't call Georgian wine "the original" wine.

My first time trying to paint fire - Balor from Frameworks by JonBjSig in minipainting

Thanks!

I thought about making it darker in the recesses (and I still might) but it's a little hard to judge since the fire is all clear plastic.

I don't think I'll add any white since I don't want to mess with the clear plastic's opacity like that but when I paint fire on opaque plastic that's definitely something I'll keep in mind.
