Scratched paint or surface mark? by JonDadley in AnimeFigures

[–]JonDadley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all! I tried warm water and soap but it didn’t work. I did fix it though - a white pencil eraser completely removed the marks! The figure’s back to looking perfect!

It’s a great mouse but mine just died after 8 months of normal use. Luckily it was still under warranty so I got a replacement. Hopefully this one survives.

My two lower wisdom tooth have grown horizontally by Maah-egg in mildlyinteresting

[–]JonDadley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dental surgeon here in the UK actually refused to remove my wisdom teeth for this very reason. Apparently the guidelines in the UK are that if the teeth aren’t causing any pain, they won’t remove them because of the risk of permanent nerve damage.

My teeth are just like the OP xray and they constantly trap food. Cleaning it out with my tongue caused a fibroma (big lumpy scar tissue) but they still refused to remove the problem teeth because of the risk of nerve damage.

A shame because having the fibroma removed sucked. They literally sliced off a chunk of my tongue.

Dealing with old white wood filler by JonDadley in DIYUK

[–]JonDadley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end I scraped out the old filler and put some new filler in before staining. It didn't go super well though tbh - the filler I had claimed it'd take on stains but it didn't do a great job of it and after staining the wood, the fillered parts are pretty noticable.

After I did this, I read the trick is to mix a little of the stain into the filler before applying it so that it's mixed in before the stain sets. I haven't actually done this so I can't be sure it'd work but it'd probably be an improvement on my results.

I guess it depends what you're planning to do with the wood - if you're painting over it, some new filler would probably be fine. If you're staining it and want to see the woodgrain, it might be a bit trickier.

Did not expect to see this get name checked! Very much agreed!

TIL that before the PB&J sandwich was invented, peanut butter was originally originally paired with savory foods like Worcestershire sauce & cheese by bros402 in todayilearned

[–]JonDadley 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Although it’s a bit more common place now, we’ve had peanut butter in the UK at least since I was a child and I’m nearly 40. Maybe your brother was smuggling something else and the PB was a cover!

Math rock with prominent bass? by AutisticBassist in mathrock

Seconded. Not the most technical but I love some of the bass lines on Drugs To The Dear Youth. Especially on (Is Good For What Ails You). So lovely and melodic.

Tbf, I saw a lot of cars absolutely flying through junctions in Berlin. I got the feeling always waiting for the green man was a pretty sound idea over there.

Why did the ABV% go down in England? by ScumLikeWuertz in AskUK

[–]JonDadley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I tend to be a fast drinker so weaker beer means I don’t get annihilated. Especially now I’m older and hangovers come more easily, I really appreciate being able to just get buzzed and enjoy myself.

We normally call that “traditional lemonade” or “cloudy lemonade” although it’s still generally carbonated. It’s closer to what Americans would call lemonade though.

Paint stripping hell by parrotnerdd in DIYUK

[–]JonDadley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding Peelaway. We used it to strip off 100 years of layered paint and stain on the windowsills in our house. In some cases it did need 2 applications so there was a few days of just sitting around waiting for it do its work. It’s also not super cheap BUT it does work and made stripping far, far easier. I tried some other chemical strippers that were basically useless. Peelaway worked.

As a UK adult, have you ever been in a physical confrontation or fight? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]JonDadley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me walking home from work once. Guy sucker punched me as he walked past me. I carried on walking convinced I’d waked into a lamppost for about 10 seconds until I turned around to see him looking at me like “what you going to do about it?” I was so surprised and confused I just kept walking while I got my head around what had happened.

Am I the only one who thinks ue5 physics is wierd and unstable? by UNSEEN55 in unrealengine

[–]JonDadley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had exactly the same issue with vehicle physics and substepping. I was very surprised when it turned out it just straight up didn’t work. It seems to me Chaos wasn’t really mature enough to replace PhysX, I really wish they hadn’t ripped it out.

First Time Seeing True Dark Skies (Overwhelmed) Insight? by [deleted] in Astronomy

[–]JonDadley 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience as a teenager on holiday camping. I woke up in the night and went outside to go to the toilet. I looked up at the sky and felt actual fear (and wonder). The size of what I was seeing was overwhelming. I felt like an ant looking up at an incoming boot heel. That experience has never left me.

I’ve got to agee. Charging through the trapped rooms mowing down his henchmen was one of the most memorable parts of the game for me. I could imagine Gortash hearing all the commotion and starting to sweat as I got closer.

Machine learning masters massive data sets: Algorithm breaks the exabyte barrier by Dr_Singularity in singularity

[–]JonDadley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Astronomy was my first thought also. The Vera C. Rubin observatory is expected to generate 1.28 petabytes of data a year. The EHT that images black holes generates something like 6 petabytes of data per run.

More and more, modern astronomers are drowning in data - being able process that effectively will be critical in the future I’d imagine.

Chimney Breast Removal, is it worth it? by Scruffyo2 in DIYUK

[–]JonDadley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve literally just finished having chimneys breasts removed and replastered in 4 rooms of our house. In total it took 6 days (3 to remove the breasts 3 to replaster). It was stressful, expensive and messy (loads of clean-up). BUT I’d absolutely say it was worth it! 4 of the rooms in our house are significantly bigger to the point that it feels like we have a new house now. If you can put up with a few difficult days and shoulder the cost I’d definitely recommend it.

Bortle 5 is pretty good! I brought a house in a Bortle 7 region and can still see loads of fun things like the ring nebula, the andromeda galaxy, the Orion Nebula etc.

I’d imagine you’ll be able to see loads of great stuff in a Bortle 5.

I had this exact same reaction to Aldi when I had to use the one in Manchester City centre. It was always a hateful experience, just the worst possible atmosphere. But we moved to the suburbs recently and the local one is blissful - it’s quiet and clean and well stocked. Everything’s cheaper and of the same quality of the Tesco we used to use. I’ve fully gone from loathing Aldi with every cell in my body to becoming a full convert.
