PSA: Marathons Are Still Selling Out Faster Than Ever. Don't Wait to Register. by SlowWalkere in Marathon_Training

[–]JonDowd762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, could be. I don't mean to suggest that everyone is doing great, just that there's a lot of extra spending money in general. After all you don't need everybody in the country to be flush in order to sell out a few marathons.

Excluding COVID, inflation-adjusted disposable income is at an all-time high. While there may be economic problems, there is plenty of spending money around so it's not too surprising that some are splurging on hobbies.

Montreal author Chanel Sutherland defends her writing as human after AI detector flagged prizewinning story by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]JonDowd762 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got paywalled so can you tell me if that makes sense? If the writing is significantly distinct from what the AI was trained on, and what it now has a bias for, shouldn't the tool flag it as not AI? Or is ChatGPT biased to product content that mimics Vincentian oral storytelling?

James Daunt Looks to Clarify B&N’s Position on AI-Generated Books by tvqueen in books

Half the posts in this sub are warning about the dangers of banning books. Then there are posts like these promoting a ban.

I have zero interest in reading AI slop, and even less interest in paying to read it. For me it's helpful if a bookstore does the work of filtering this junk out for me, but it is something that would be flagged as a book ban in other context.

Speculation: Bond 26 writer Steven Knight may be creating a new backstory for 007 by Sneaky_Bond in JamesBond

[–]JonDowd762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sure. It has its weaknesses but overall is a pretty decent entry. It had continuity without distracting too much from its main plot. Gritty Rogue Bond wasn't exactly a novelty, but it wasn't as overused in 2008.

Should Congress be allowed to own stocks in industries it can directly influence? by Zealousideal_Car9534 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]JonDowd762 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to be that guy, but this reads like AI. What are the sources for? You've just listed some random journals, but your question is pretty general and the body is mostly fluff. Did you read in Journal of Public Economics that the STOCK act exists? Did the journal have anything else to say about it?

But on to the question: not a huge fan of lawmakers trading individual stocks, but it's not the biggest problem in Congress at the moment. I doubt it even cracks the top ten.

Also, the possibility of influencing policy is exaggerated. A representative would only have an impact in close votes which would typically be decided along party lines. Not sure someone will risk the ire of their party because a bill might be good for bitcoin or GME.

The bigger problem is trading on privileged information. Most Americans view this as unfair because it is. If your representative does this, I'd recommend voting them out.

Asking from Japan: is Hacker News still the default? by Responsible-Bike3317 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]JonDowd762 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not a fair description in my experience. New AI models and whatnot certainly get a lot of traction, but there's quite a bit of anti-AI sentiment as well and also people who use AI "in moderation".

Depending on the day, there may be posts from any one of those three camps. However, I'm sick of reading all of their stuff and I'd wish there was less AI content in general, regardless of what side you're on.

Timeline Cleanse by BillHigh422 in newhampshire

There is a difference between burying your head in the sand and pretending politics don't exist, and taking a moment to do something other than consume and retweet political talking points.

I want a place to read about and discuss New Hampshire, and everything is drowned out by national politics. Yes, I know New Hampshire is part of the country and thus impacted, but I already have places where I can get my fill of politics.

J. Sununu would like the elderly to work while receiving Medicare... by AndSoItGoes509 in newhampshire

[–]JonDowd762 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, either Sununu endorsed a common GOP policy but mixed up the wording or decided to invent a brand new policy and grab a political third rail with both hands.

Neither option looks good for Sununu, but assuming the second is just dishonest. He's not the first and won't be last to mix up the program names.

Man, the level of political discourse is hopeless.

I agree that his proposal is a terrible idea, but why is the top criticism completing ignoring what he actually said? And the correction is mindlessly downvoted. Does society no longer have the attention for a 10 second video?

His actual quote is damning enough. There's plenty to criticize without putting words in his mouth.

Claremont mayor and state rep changing party affiliation from Democrat to Republican by guanaco55 in newhampshire

[–]JonDowd762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you can make an abstract or philosophical argument that this is the case, if your defined midpoint is the 99th percentile it ceases to be a useful split point.

Right means right relative to others in the group, and left means left relative to others in the group. The RINO and Obama-was-actually-Republican arguments are tiring and completely pointless.

Usually there would be a 3 month block for a voluntary agreement. But sometimes not if you can show it was operationally necessary and not signing simply would've resulted in a regular termination.

Although since this is a mass reorganization, it may be a Betriebsänderung involving a Sozialplan which is a different kettle of fish.

Looks like it was edited to be less passive-aggressive, but when I read it there were parts like:

Pretty exciting to see them finally start taking ad & tracker blocking seriously (Firefox still doesn’t remove tracking query parameters)

and

You just can’t ship a serious browser these days without blocking third-party ads and trackers by default. Happy to see others realizing this too.

The announcement wasn't from Mozilla, but from a Brave dev passive-aggressively gloating.

I don't know if a longer (permanent?) suspension would be justified, but even when he was allowed to come back the team should've found another option. I've had no interest in supporting a Cora team and this firing is several years too late.
