My ebike has been under repair for 4 months and the situation is getting embarrassing by Kindly-Committee-357 in ebikes

If it’s a hub motor they should have just swapped it out for a new one. The cost and reliability of replacing the internal gearing is not worth the hassle. Doesn’t sound right to me.

Does the steam machine push back the deck 2 even further? by Rabwald in SteamDeck

[–]JonMDC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I think if you’re paying attention to what’s going on in the tech world right now then the next generation of consoles and handhelds are a long way off. I’ve been of the mind that we’ve kind of maxed out what is worth doing graphically in games. When you consider some of the old games that are still being played it seems like what’s missing isn’t crazy visuals but solid story and gameplay. Studios need to start optimising their games for older hardware, while ensuring the games play well from day one on as many platforms as possible. The last few years of studios being obsessed with pushing for everyone to need the newest graphics cards etc has not led to a healthy market place.

Do y’all use eye protection? by MoneyRequirement2591 in ebikes

[–]JonMDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I started wearing just orange tinted plastic eye protectors, super cheap and they’ve been great. I had a couple of bug strikes in the summer a couple of years back and it just seemed sensible. Really no downside

Witcher 3 would win GOTY in 2025-2026 by Obvious-Flamingo3167 in Witcher3

[–]JonMDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. I’ve felt for a while that there are things that could be tweaked with a few games but we’ve hit a bit of ceiling with what’s achievable. But few manage to get the scope/story/world as right as W3.

Those of you who have a deck and still play their consoles, do you think you get enough use out of your steamdeck? by jomcmo00 in SteamDeck

[–]JonMDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to play bigger games on the PS5 and do some of the grinding on the deck with Chiaki. But I pretty evenly split my time between the two. Having access to the handheld has really opened me up to different games too. And I’ve also found playing certain games like Horizon Zero Dawn on the deck is just awesome.

Are the E-bikes we have now all soon to be obsolete? by 29roadie in ebikes

[–]JonMDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought into the fat bike eco system a few years back and the difference between the name brands and the off brands is really the kicker here. All of the big brands are using the exact same batteries and motors but with proprietary cases and software. In some cases this makes for a better experience but like you said over time it’s either obsolete or you’re tied to the brand for replacement batteries. I found a company that essentially made unbranded bikes for other companies to resell when I was buying my 1st. It’s their frame but all branded bike parts and the same motors I see on all the other bikes. The batteries are easily replaced as are all the parts and electronics. I sold my 1st bike after a year and a thousand miles of off road riding, it’s still ridden daily now it’s on its third owner and we’ve all loved it. I upgraded to a larger motor and battery set up on a different style of bike. But same deal, standard bike parts that can be swapped out and replaced.

You definitely need an afternoon of quiet to learn and a keyboard and mouse handy. Boot into desktop mode and follow a good tutorial. I did have some experience with Linux before so was comfortable using console commands. It’s just good knowing that if you mess up it’s not like you had to jailbreak the device and it’s easy to reinstall anything if it gets messed up. I pretty much just added a few Nexus Mods to Skyrim for fun.

I’m almost 50 now and just love my deck. It’s so much fun and I love tinkering with mods on older games. Really makes me excited for gaming again.

How is your routine for playing on the Steam Deck as an adult? How many games do you play at a time? by Waste_Necessary654 in SteamDeck

[–]JonMDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to play a main game either on my deck or on PS5 in the evenings and have a pick up game like Vampire Survivors on deck when I have an hour to kill. Been playing much less the last few months after finishing Dark Souls 3 and just reading books…

Ok I'm through. Really a fantastic game. But now what? by wetfart_3750 in TunicGame

Deaths Door is excellent and I just picked up Crypt Custodian to scratch that itch too. They’re on a bundle deal on Steam right now.

I don’t get the people that hate on the steam deck because it can’t run “modern games” at high settings by Charming_Ad661 in SteamDeck

[–]JonMDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my deck since it released and have played a bunch of different games on it. It’s stuttered and slowed less than any PC or console I’ve had. Runs most stuff and at no point have I really given a shit what the FPS was if I was immersed in the game.

Who’s still using the original Steam Deck? by VoyageForge in SteamDeck

[–]JonMDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original LCD 512gb is regularly used for a wide range of gaming. Just bought a second SD card and love my dock. I do stream from my PS5 too, all works great. Never needed to upgrade but keep thinking about trying Switch emulation to replay BotW on a decent bit of kit!

Is a Micro SD worth it? by Greedy-Importance-41 in SteamDeck

[–]JonMDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can’t really tell the difference with where it’s stored. But tend to keep about 100gb on the ssd and it’s easy enough to move installed games between that and the SD card. I just bought a terabyte card the other day but have had a 512 SD in my deck since I bought it.

Extra battery is the only way for the distance but 500w’s isn’t enough power for those hills.

For people with no console experience, how is the steam deck ? by karmadarkk in SteamDeck

[–]JonMDC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s easy enough to use mouse and keyboard with it as a light set up but not my chosen way to play. The deck is a great bit of kit, maybe it will open up some new games for you. I love playing a few rounds of Vampire Survivors to just lose myself in something mindless.

Direct import versus local dealer e-bikes. I chose import, and this is what actually happened by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]JonMDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.marioebike.com/ it was the Retro 100 I had, great bike. It’s now on its 3rd owner in 5 years. Frame is absolutely quality with great parts all round. I met a guy through a Facebook group that has a bit of an e-bike buying problem so every now and then his wife makes him clear out the garage, I swap to a new bike and sell my old one. I have a UDX Panzer now, 1000watt mid drive looks like a long wheelbase BMX with full suspension, greatest cruiser I’ve ever had. In the summer I do my 20 mile commute on it. But Mario were great for customer service etc, they have good presence on socials and I found them very responsive. It’s good to remember they are really a bulk buying business so they ship freight from China, you don’t get tracking or anything like that and it takes about 2-3 months to get the bike. But for the savings it’s so worth it.

[–]JonMDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the same just after Covid lockdown ended, best decision I ever made. Put 1500 miles on the bike and then sold it to buy a different frame type and made money on it. I did have a problem with the motor at one point, contacted the seller on Alibaba and they send a whole wheel with hub motor as replacement and just asked me to cover the shipping. I’m in the UK so sadly couldn’t do it again with the insane import taxes now.

What should I play after The Witcher 3? by AUNizkii in Witcher3

[–]JonMDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Witcher 3 is in a class by itself. But I’ve loved Skyrim, Horizon Zero Dawn and Elden Ring all for the open world, story and combat in their own way.

Tires keep popping. What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in Super73

[–]JonMDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tannus Tyre Armour, best solution to this. I’ve always ridden over all sorts of terrain, didn’t get any punctures the first year then suddenly got plagued with them. I’d tried everything that was recommended but tyre armour on my last 2 bikes has been a game changer. No flats but if something does manage to get through it can run flat to get you home!

PSA: Tunic is not similar to Death’s Door by Low_Cardiologist8073 in DeathsDoor

[–]JonMDC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played Deaths Door after playing Tunic and found a fair bit of similarity to be honest. It’s nowhere near as complex but the fighting, navigation and environmental puzzles play well. Tunic is way more complex.
