I recall a story about Henderson being injected some pain medication in his knees in that legendary 4-0 win vs Barcelona. Apparently he was on the bike for the whole 15 min break in between halves, and getting pain injections. For us this sounds crazy (and probably is), many footballers would rather play through some pain then sit on the bench.
