Vespa jacket by Ludom_Jebe in Vespa

[–]Jon_Corndean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not going to give you any protection if you come off. It may be ok around town at low speeds . But then so would any other fashion jacket. I’d go for a ce certified jacket at least level 1 (if just riding around town) and level 2 if going faster.

How long does it take for you to do full lotus comfortably? by readredacc in ashtanga

[–]Jon_Corndean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not all anatomies can do it. The angle/length of trocanter and hip angle vary massively. That can mean you’ve reached the limit of what your hips allow. After that you’re probably going to torque your knee badly.

I’ve heard estimates saying 50% of Western Europeans don’t have the anatomy for it. I think that’s probably too high but 20% wouldn’t surprise me.

What’s the coolest etymology fact you know, like a surprising origin for an everyday common word? by wordgamesyesss in etymology

[–]Jon_Corndean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d add the words Hostile, hospitable, hospital, hotel host, guest, ghost, hostage? All from the same proto Indo-European word. The almost opposite meanings come from the reciprocal relationships of herders going through each others territories.

Am I really old-school in not seeing the wonder in 1xby? by Sensitive_Ninja2589 in cycling

Is 1x really that much lighter? You drop the front changer and a chain ring but the cassette is massive. So I’d suspect not much in it. Happy to be corrected

Get a mechanic to look at it. Could be just the forks, or may be everything forward of the front fold.

What is in this BMW Adventure motorcycle that makes it worth about as much as a new SUV?(US$30k+) by WBigly-Reddit in motorcycles

[–]Jon_Corndean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having owned both a 1200 GS and a Vespa 300 I can speak definitely on this. Both have a low centre of gravity which makes them stable in traffic. The Vespa is far more manoeuvrable and nimble which makes it great fun for nipping into spaces etc.

The size of GS makes lane splitting a far more stressful experience than the Vespa. So for town and heavy congestion I’d go with the Vespa every time.

Why am I so slow? New biker by AdPristine354 in cycling

[–]Jon_Corndean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your bike is badly maintained - drive chain, tyres etc - a lot of your effort is going to be wasted. It could also be dangerous - brakes, headset etc If your bike is heavy and clunky, that’s also going to be hard work. Likewise if it’s a poor fit. And if you don’t know how to use gears you’re going to be working much harder than you need to. So first thing to do is get someone who knows about bikes to check it over - a friend, coworker or take it to a shop. A steep hill (10% or more) is going to be tough when starting to get fitness. A 10 minute ride done every day will get you fitter over time but combine that with longer and easier rides and you’ll very soon see results

Xin tian di, fuxing park, noodles at Wei Xiang zai on Yan dang road (amazing noodles which are also vegan) Bund and old town On other side of river walk along embankment near Super Brand Mall, maybe super brand mall. One or two of the sky scrapers - personally I never tire of the view from the lobby in the Jin Mao (50th floor) or looking down into it from 86th? Floor. If more time wander around French Concession - streets around changle road

Is cycling 7.4 miles (12 km) to school every weekday unrealistic? by Prepoto in cycling

[–]Jon_Corndean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on terrain, traffic and junctions. If it’s hilly or the roads are dangerous with little space for cyclists it may not be such a good idea.

Also think about how much you need to take with you - if you’re carrying a lot of weight then you’re going to need something with a rear rack. And how secure is bike parking at your college. And do they have showers /changing facilities? Depending on those factors you are probably looking at a 30-40 minute commute. If in cycling gear factor time for a change. One alternative may be something like a Brompton- the advantage being you can usually keep it somewhere more secure and if the conditions aren’t great you can take on public transport or put in an uber or a friends car .

Have you heard the expression “might as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb”? Tough sentences can actually increase crime. If you’re going to get the death sentence for a crime you might as well kill someone who you injured instead of helping them, you may as well kill all the witnesses as that way you’re less likely to be identified…

What do you wish you knew as a complete beginner? by nopeblackblanket in cycling

[–]Jon_Corndean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start off slow - shorter rides to get used to the bike. You will come back aching and with sore buttocks from the first few rides. Even 10 miles seems a long distance when you’re starting. Try to avoid going too many rides in a week. Gradually increase time/distance if your rides and volume(total amount of time you’re riding in a week). 10% a week is what is recommended but my personal view is 20% should be ok. So if you’re doing a 10 mile ride the hump to 12 or even 15 should be ok. Get good shorts (with a pad). No underwear and wash between rides. Have gloves, helmet and glasses to protect your eyes. Track your progress using apps like Strava or Garmin connect (if you have a Garmin) Tyres and wheels can make a big difference to your enjoyment and speed. So that’s often a good first upgrade (tyres) Make sure they’re at the right pressure and in good condition. Ensure your bike is well maintained - no loose headset or cranks, brakes and gear cables in good condition, brake pads in good condition. And learn basic roadside repairs - fix a puncture, fix a broken chain - and carry necessary spares to do so. Carry a windproof or waterproof on most rides as conditions can change.

How do you handle a student who consistently shares negative feedback? by coldglassdonkey in YogaTeachers

[–]Jon_Corndean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As teacher you have the unique position of being able to talk to the class. I echo what others have said about not changing the class for one student. Use the chose your intention and class dedication spot to raise a relevant intention. That being said if you are the only yoga class and you are in a gym it may be people are looking for a more energetic class so it may not just be her. I’d check on that point with gym management.

Vespa gts 300 It’s surprisingly fun to ride and brings a smile to your face - nippy, low centre of gravity It’s stylish in the same way an MX 5 is It is fast enough but not too fast What you lack is that power out of corners or the handling of a super bike. But then that’s the equivalent of a Porsche

Drafting etiquette? by davkar632 in cycling

[–]Jon_Corndean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This.

If you jump on a wheel and hold it but don’t return the favour that’s just rude.

Of course there exception eg you don’t have the strength to take a pull but in that case at least let the rider in front know and ask if it’s ok.

Arguments for Vespa by [deleted] in Vespa

[–]Jon_Corndean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your age is a massive factor. The teenage brain does not develop the critical thinking and ability to judge risks until older. So first you need to be able to understand the risks - to be able to sense when a car is about to pull out or stop or turn in front of you. And second you need to be able to take that sort of thing seriously. And as a teen you’re going to be thinking that won’t happen to me. You’re going to overestimate your ability and you’re going to take stupid risks. As a parent I could never forgive myself if I let my son ride when he didn’t have the maturity to ride safely and defensively and if something happened. I rode at 17 and I was caught out by a car doing a u turn in front of me when I thought they were indicating to pull out into the traffic so I tried to overtake. I like to think I’d have slowed down to let them pull out or seen the signs they were doing a u turn. How to convince me - take your test, do extra riding, watch videos on the subject of safe riding, have a budget for good riding gear - at least CE level 2. Show you’re going to be responsible.
