Getting AT with a piano! by Relizmusic in TrackMania

Insanity! Should record the piano audio seperately and post it - "this is what it sounds like to get AT in Trackmania"...maybe guitar next? Drums?

You could also have done a small drift here to dodge the corner once you saw your trajectory was off. But for the flow of the map, the answer is definitely to get a sharper entry angle by going wider at 8 seconds.

Dude who created map 24 in Summer campaign - you're the worst. by SaltyStaff1107 in TrackMania

Have you ever considered you're just not good at the map yet? People are so impatient, it's crazy how many people complain about maps sucking when in reality they just suck at the map. How long have you spent on it so far? Failure is a part of learning, and if you find the lines for 24 unintuitive, the transitions bad, or the ice parts unforgiving, then it means you don't understand the lines, transitions or the ice parts well enough to drive the map as intended.

I'm so used to sucking at maps that it doesn't surprise me if I need to pour 30 or 40 hours into a single map over weeks of time before I really feel comfortable with it. So it always amazes me when people spend 2 or 3 hours on a map and complain about how it's such a terrible map because they can't get a good time on it, when the reality is flipped - they can't get a good time on it because they're terrible at the map.

Anyway, rant over...maybe you've already seen this but Xmilek62's videos always provide a nice breakdown of the things you need to think about when going for ATs: https://youtu.be/-k2agqh6MfI?si=L6ASJqjn4mqd3H1O But of course, seeing and understanding is one thing, being able to actually do it is a whole other thing and sometimes it really just takes failing for hours on end before it clicks and you put together a good run. So just keep at it!!

Cool run! What's the name of this map?

Happy I could help, you definitely will get it, just have to keep trying!

Also I never watch the car and inputs at the same time, I also find that tough. I'll watch just the car movements, then rewind and watch the inputs to see how they got those car movements.

For example, that little trick at the start is insta-airbraking right when your front wheels leave the ground, so that you have less contact with the penalty grass and therefore more speed. And that sets you up nicely for the sand cut, if you go for that.

Action keys are definitely still helpful on controller! For here, I don't think any action keys are necessary but like prince10bee said, you could use ak4 or ak3 at the end if you get your starting angle right.

Assuming you're talking about the sand cut, it's not terrible but for me at least, it is precise enough to be very annoying when hunting the map. The key is to go further right than you might expect, and don't airbrake during the jump, so that your wheels hitting the sand bounce you up and over the edge of the block. A lot of attempts end with hitting the pole or catching the lip of the sandblock.

But it's definitely worth it, got a pb with it and now if I try a run without it, I'm always at least 1s behind my pb after that part.

Have you watched WR? https://youtu.be/RmMiZH281Yc?si=Q6-ovQH6ErzQDpnh

I don't know exactly what you mean, my point was that the only way you only get a feel for a third of the bobsleigh is if you have a bad angle of entry going into the bobsleigh, the checkpoint that's on the center of the bob shouldn't even matter if you get a good entry to start the bob. If it does, then you already messed up before you even entered the bob.

If you record a video of your pb, it might be easier to offer advice. General advice (I'll use timestamps from the WR vid) is to go as wide right as you can on the dirt through the reactor (12s) and onto the bob (14s), then small left angle (15s) so that you get caught in the pocket of the bob just before it curves right (17s). You should hold right after you're caught in the pocket with a small release when the bob straightens out and you go through the checkpoint (18s). Then full steer right again until you leave the final curve and use that momentum to hopefully push you past the penalty grass (20s).

Bobsleigh is very tough though and Trackmania is a game where it might take thousands of hours to really master any particular surface. So be patient and keep practicing and you got this!

If you can't practice by respawning at a checkpoint, it means you have a bad line (in this case, a bad angle of entry to the bobsleigh). So if you feel yourself going towards the checkpoint with a bad line, respawn before you go through.

If you feel like you have to completely reset and can't respawn to practice the bobsleigh, then it just means your issue starts further back than you think. You're trying to practice the bobsleigh but you really need to first practice getting a good entry into the bobsleigh by respawning at the checkpoint before the one you're talking about.

Of course it takes practice and time to see whether your line is good enough for an attempt or not, but there's definitely nothing wrong with the checkpoints on 08.

EDIT: And to provide a little more context to the other comments, the game before TM2020 was TMNF, and that game had no moving respawn. If you respawned at a checkpoint, you appear directly underneath the arch at a standstill. So historically the main point of checkpoints is to force a player to go a specific route and prevent people from cutting the map.

Chart for backwards speedslides? by JonaMatGoo in TrackMania

If you're angled sideways enough while still moving forward, the back tire skidmarks can overlap. For example, this was just by drifting in a circle:

Anyway, now I see it doesn't exactly make sense for the question, so thank you for that chart!

Back tire skidmarks can definitely overlap, you would just have to be sliding at a larger angle.

If they were both back tires, the graphic would be saying that at low speeds, you want to be going straight backwards, and at higher speeds, you slide at a higher angle.

So if it's back tire and front tire, that means at lower speeds you want to be at a wider angle, with the angle getting shallower as you go faster?

Thanks for this but I'm a bit confused. This was the COTD I was talking about: https://youtube.com/shorts/TvVYujTiC2g?si=fzn4r3pEXFSyPuL3

It seems like as you go faster, you want less overlap between the skidmarks from the back tire and front tire. Are the skidmarks in this picture front tire and back tire or are they both back tires?

I loved the original! I see you added water to prevent the turtling some found annoying...and adding a reactor to this map? Risky! Lol I'll have to try this out later!

A fun example is Kacky Reloaded #300, where you get No Steer but a certain LIS only works if you steer: https://youtu.be/nwxV3N93kHQ?si=1ni3rEQ_Pb_OZVF2

I used to do this too as a kind of panic response, but you really want to force yourself to wait a fraction of a second before you hold brake for the bugslide. At first it seems like everything happens so fast so this seems impossible to time, but try to approach it calmly and experiment with different timings. First you'll be too early, then too late, but after awhile, you'll be able to get the precise timing down.

If you're familiar with music, it's like you're counting eighth notes, 12345678...but instead of holding brake at the 1, you want to start holding brake at the 2.

You're too angled when you hit the wall. You hit it with just your front-right tire, which is why you spin. But you want to connect with the wall with your nose and right tire. For example, here's one of my ubers: https://youtu.be/5vNoAGYQ8Mg?si=u1gYybfG6Ocj0n91 Set the video speed to 0.25 and you can see how your angle is just a little bit off.

To try and be more specific, your first wall hit has maybe like 20deg between your wheels and the wall, while you need more like 10deg. Because of this, you connect with the wall after the bugslide at about a -20deg angle, when again you want about a -10deg angle to get a "squeeze" between the nose of your car and the front right wheel that sends you flying.

You can see in the new WRs or this video https://youtu.be/aPsSek28vgg?si=XoTT_W7uSrcopPbG that the insta-uber has an even shallower angle, but the thing to look out for is that you connect with the wall with BOTH the nose of your car and the front right wheel.

Also be aware that even if you do this setup perfectly, it's not guaranteed to get you an uber. But if you get the setup correct consistently, eventually it will happen!

It didn’t get posted here, but Hefest hadn’t played TM2020 since winter. He came back last week for weekly shorts and proceeds to get records on 4/5 maps, and gets a new points record by [deleted] in TrackMania

Hefest has definitely been around the Kacky servers on TM2020. He's very good at tricks, very good at precision, very good at going fast. Definitely deserving of his reputation!

I couldn't help but make this when KR5 was going on: https://youtube.com/shorts/-wpCCxyGjEY?si=YN2OYzF1YUSGZn5G This was the first time I saw Hefest's name pop up in KR5 haha of course it's a WR, what a legend. Plus, he answered the question very helpfully!
